The video illustrates the geological formation of Santorini, the most important volcanic archipelago in Europe. Scenery animations (created with Bryce and ParticleIllusion), annimated paleogeographic maps and on site video recordings (Spring 2011) are combined.
(I have published a new video on RU-vid "Akrotiri - the Frescoes and the Cataclysm", which primarily presents recent scientific findings of the last 10 years on Minoan-Cycladic culture and the Thera cataclysm.)
The South Aegean Volcanic Arc (Video Series)

Akrotiri - the Frescoes and the Cataclysm
2.) Volcanic Island Nisyros - Plate Tectonics and Geology
3.) Milos - Obsidian Island (coming soon)
4.) Methana and Aegina (coming)

Finally. A documentary that speaks intelligently about the governing dynamics of the volcanic event that ended BOTH the Minoans and the extraordinary Stonehenge civilizations. At 10.33 the main eruption is described. It is now understood that at those same moments the island of Crete, 88 miles away, was rapidly sinking.

23:15 the tsunamis are estimated to be between 35-150m (115-492ft) high when taking into account the size of the Krakatoa tsunamis and the fact that the Thera eruption was so much more powerful than Krakatoa!! Sea life deposits were found in a layer far inland on Crete suggesting the waves had a devastating effects wiping out/destroying coastal settlements (passing right through them pretty much). Really enjoying this video thank you, sad to be almost finished :c

Very interesting. It helps to have the various land masses laid out in a manner that shows their relationships both in the past and the present. I expect that most people, myself included, assumed there was only the one major eruption that did all the damage, (along with its concurrent tsunami). To find out that there were several that reshaped the island over and over again while maintaining the ring-shape is very interesting and has given me a new perspective on this bit of geologic history.

I liked your video. I wonder what the aftermath was. For how long did the cloud remain, for all the ash and dust to subtle? Was it able to destroy crops on the wider region? What effects did it have on the climate of the region? Could it cause heavy rain fall?
@hthvideography

Comparatively little is known about the consequences of the Minoan cataclysm. Friedrich discusses some of these in his book (Friedrich: Fire in the Sea; Cambridge University Press 2000). For example, how badly Crete was affected or whether there was a climate deterioration in China.

Excellent video and information. Well put. But My curiosity question is this; just how long did the eruption actually last? Is it possible to date this period as well? Or would you use the time of re-population on the new lands the volcano created?
@hthvideography
@hthvideography 4 года назад
Hello Possumn1138, we have no reports or scientific hypotheses about the duration of the Thera cataclysm. However, one can assume that the cataclysm was similar to the eruption of Gunung Tambora (which was probably even larger). The volcanologist Clive Oppenheimer summarizes it (Eruptions that shook the world; 2011): There was a precursor eruption (there was one on Santorini, too) on April 5th 1815, which lasted about 2 to 3 hours, this had a magnitude of 5 on the VEI (same as Vesuvius 79 AD or Mt. St. Helens). The main explosion occurred in the evening of 10 April and lasted 24 hours (VEI magnitude 7). Of these, about 3 hours were accounted for by the first plinian eruption, the rest by further continuous explosions and associated pyroclastic flows that devastated the entire Sanggar Peninsula. Smaller explosions at regular intervals continued until 15 July. Greetings hth

Unfortunately, there will ALWAYS be dislikes.... people don't like the narrator's accent, they belong to fringe groups with odd views of history, they are purists who don't like the dramatic introduction... it's no biggie. That said, i heartily agree with you: for many, even a BIT of real science and well-researched information are indeed "too much" to handle.

Thera eruptions caused the fast decline of Minoan cultivation
@hthvideography
@hthvideography 5 месяцев назад
According to the latest scientific findings, the period between the Thera cataclysm and the end of the Minoan civilisation is around 200 years, i.e. eight generations. A simple causal connection - as often assumed by scientists in the past and still today in esoteric circles - is therefore extremely unlikely. Of course, this does not rule out a complex chain of effects with feedback loops as causes: f.e. destruction of and damage to important harbours, impairment of traditional trade routes, famine, local uprisings, etc... hth

@hthvideography 8 месяцев назад
Sorrry, I have to disagree, because that no longer corresponds to the latest state of research. According to that, the explosive power of the Thera volcano was less than assumed. Only about one third of Aniakchak II, which erupted 30 years earlier (1645 BC). In addition, Egypt was only marginally affected by the volcanic ash cloud. See also my new video "Akrotiri - the Frescoes and the Cataclysm"

Santorini (or better Thera) was indeed known as kalliste, but I am reffering here to the pre-Kameni island, which formed after 197 BC. Plinius (Naturalis Historiae 4.70) gives its name as hiera (for a summary of the historical sources see Friedrich "Fire in the sea" Cambridge UP, 2000, p. 184-185)

Mediterranean sea is the basin underneath Greece, Italy, Sardinia and Corsica, Malta, Spain, Cyprus, the Levant (Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Palestine and above North Africa and some of southern Turkey.
