SANWA RD700 Multimeter Review & Teardown!

For me sanwa is the one of the best brand of digital and analog multimeter w/ high accuracy.

Even with its short comings it’s still a sold meter. It would be a good HVAC field meter. Nice review! 👏🏻👍

I have a NOS Sanwa PC500a. It look almost similar to RD700. I have a feeling Sanwa cutting some corners in the RD700. I will check mine whether it could test LED. Drum roll...... On a positive note, all Sanwa test leads is indeed good as if each pair is perfectly designed and match to the intended model. Great honest review Darren. Thumbs up 😁

Thanks for swapping the battery to check the diode Vf. It's silly to have such great fuses but almost no other input protection. And that janky shunt location (although the shunt itself is beautiful). Kind of a dangerous meter because you'd expect more from Sanwa. Slap a generic name on it, price it at $30US and it'd be great for my low voltage/low current needs. It's a beauty on the outside for sure!

I like the review. I also liked certain elements of this RD700. I guess it was called RD for research and development, and this meter needs more R&D. At least the continuity and accuracy was good:). One thing to watch for with RU-vid, for some reason, it unsubscribed me. I had subscribe again. I hope that doesn't affect my chances for the giveaway. Please reenter me if that's the case.

have no backlight is still acceptable, but, ouch.. the slow capacitance and the diode test are such a turn off.. what i like, i mean, what i love from this meter is the display, its contrast is very pleasing to see, so gorgeous!

permission to ask sir what is the difference between rd700 and rd701 I don't understand to see the difference between the two and what about the cd732 type is it better than the rd700 or rd701 type because I want to buy from one of them

At first it was looking very good but in the middle, not impressive test on led, and capacitor.

I wonder if it will light a UV led?

Darren - Email trouble and cant get through on thunderbird or ATTemail either one, may not hear from or reach me for awhile not sure how long. Going to see if I can get mailbird program working for now. Turns out mailbird wont work either as it cant login/access the ATT parent email provider - its a real cluster.

Sanwa meggar is a failure due high voltage leak age when you hold in your hand.I have two same meters giving same problems.

Is this model still made in Japan? Or China now?

shame about the performance of this meter in diode and capacitance, nice looking meter and i like the bold display. not sure if best value or even best meter in it price range

At least: A pretty sturdy builded DMM. And I like really the LC- Display! But: I can´t even identify the targetted group of customers or the purposed field of working. (And BTW I can´t see any CAT-Rating at all, too.) - Is it for beginners, as a "Jack-of-all-trades" device? With such limited and slow capacity measurement? Not even able to handle LED`s? Really...? - Is it supposed to be a "on the road" DMM, living a tough life in a toolbox? Without a Backlight? At this price...? - Is it targetted towards craftsmen, working on mains? Without a propper input protection and not CAT rated? Are you serious...? - Should it serve as a "My first DMM", connected only at battery driven circuits? There are much cheaper and (at the same time) more functional devices from competitors available, for example: The 8000`s from Aneng, the 139 series or even the old 61E from Uni-T. The main flaws of this DMM are pretty well shown in this review: Weak input protection, slow capacity measurement (limited to 3mF), no testing of LED`s possible and no backlight. Sorry SANWA, this DMM is simply heavy outdated. Time for a new (up-to-date) replacement one. (Maybe even one without a 9V battery...?)

Wow - disappointingly underwhelming. The overall build quality is there but too many head scratching fails in this price range especially given Sanwa's reputation for quality and performance. Wouldve been nice to have a bit smaller display font and include that nice fast bar graph of the other two Sanwa's. The molasses slow cap range was a real surprise, as was the total inability to either light or read even one LED, on this meter its strictly a diode test range and no more. No excuse for the lack of a backlight in this price range, none - even most cheapo's have a backlight. I have to say the input area was also very disappointing for a meter in the Sanwa league, first the lack of ptcs and movs as you said that current shunt is very oddly located especially with obvious space for it on the board down below. Its bodged in with a big fat wire nearly in the way of the range switch and it seems l.ike that large shunt could damage smaller more vulnerable components near it on the other side if it generated enough heat during use. Its nice that the fuses are ceramic with easy access but I kinda expected to see the nice beefy HRC type such as Fluke uses in this price range. I also have to wonder if the case would survive much of an impact with only one screw holding the back on. On a high note the leads are top notch and thats the loudest continuity ive ever seen in a multimeter. Hate to be a negative nellie but I have to feel Sanwa is capable of doing better at this price level, there are other choices on the market for similar cost that dont have most or any of these flaws.
