Just a short one this week (with another short one on Wednesday). We have a Sanyo VTC-5000 Betacord. Only Sony could use the Betamax name so other manufacturers used just Beta or Betacord. Done on a bit of a quick turn around with a subsequent long soak-test to make sure it's as perfect as it can be.
Hope you enjoyed this one. I have to say I'd forgotten some of the finer points of repairing these machines (brain fog from too much going on is my excuse!) so forgive the somewhat amatuer nature in parts of the video. Lots more Sanyo Beta fun to come including a high-end NTSC machine, some more VTC6500 fun and the VTC5150.

VTC-5000, Best machine of the 80s. Nearly every household had this machine back then. I remember one common issue that used to occur on these machines which was no lace up. The cure was to replace IC3005 in the System Control circuit. The IC was well know for going faulty. Excellent Video Alex...

That's worth noting on the no lacing issue. Thankfully I've never come across hits but really useful to know about the common failure IC3005. Another top tip! Thank you 😊

Lovely condition. I have one similar cosmetically. Not my favourite Beta machine, doesn’t have the solid feel of Sony models & the lacing/ unlacing always sound clattery to me, unlike the satisfying sound of the C7 for example, which is an earlier machine of course. Very easy to service though, mine only needed the belts & idler changed, other than cleaning. Mine often can play tapes that other models struggle with too. Great for rewinding tapes you’re not too sure of as well, as you know it won’t contaminate the heads. You’d think it might wind & rewind faster, as the tape isn’t laced up but I’ve never found that, though mine hasn’t had the modification that I believe you can do, to improve torque. Certainly a popular model, in its time & serious Beta collectors should have one. Another brilliant video Alex.

Certainly not up to the build quality but they are very useful for certain troublesome cassettes as are the Toshiba Beta's. The unlacing for wind/ rewind really is a great savior and beats the Toshiba's that also don't have the 'fan' and harder head chips Sony machines had. Thank you so much Rob, really is apprecaited.

I have this model as well as its PAL/SECAM equivalent for the Middle East, the VTC 5550. I fitted new belts and idlers on both of them and upgraded the syscon circuit to increase take-up torque. My 5000 developed a chroma fault afterwards where the color is intermittent. Hopefully some new caps will sort that out.

I may well have a look at that take-up torque modification and test it with a torque measurement cassette - too much does strain the capstan/ pinch roller although both are fairly tough and reliable on these Sanyo machines. Really great machines though and the VTC5550 is definitely on the list.

@@MrBetaByte You won't find one easily, in the UK at least. I know Colin who does video transfers has one. I bought mine from the local ads since it was sold new here in Greece due to its SECAM capability.

Certainly simpler than Sony but they do lack some of the refinements.

@turokforever007 Very true - amazing how little you actually need mechnically to play a cassette...

You can't hoover with a Dyson. As a Miele user, I see it that way too. That was a comparatively easy repair today. However, today it was a little bit different because this device has an extra GND cable between the high-frequency tin can and the head drum unit.

I had one the other day with an extra ground cable, perhaps it was a production mod.

I did mean to mention about that and totally forgot - something for a future video. I do seem to remember there could be noise/ dropouts from intermittent connectivity to ground of the shields.

I do wonder if it was an aftermarket recommendation?

@@MrBetaByte The main point seems to me to be to find out whether it was about radiation into the head amplifier (stripe pattern), white dots in the image during playback (head disc GND), or UHF reception interference in real existing antenna systems. Colin also has a device with an extra cable.
