Depends where you're from. Someone might know more than me but I think the difference in pronunciation historically (that happens with a lot of Irish names) has to do with differences in accent.

I dunno if I'd consider 'Meath' to be the Pale: that's more Dublin, Kildare, north Wicklow, and the bits of eastern Meath and south Louth that contain Dublin tendrils. OTOH, she's from Dublin, and that's *definitely* the Pale.

I am a huge appreciator of saoirse but jen law is also a great actress i just don't understand why she gets so much of hate. Both of these women have shone in their respective choice of movies that they have worked in so far. I don't think one can replace the other.

I completely agree. The name isn’t English, it’s Gaeilge, and it makes me so upset that an Irish person would say such a thing about a beautiful Irish name. It’s not “too Irish” & it’s not “spelled wrong”. Maybe she’s just trying to please her American colleagues because literally no Irish person would say it’s too Irish or spelled wrong or hard to pronounce

That’s why it makes no sense for her to say it’s spelled wrong etc. it’s an Irish name, so you obviously don’t pronounce it how English pronounce words/letters/etc. Some find this video funny but I actually find it offensive, she’s talking down on her own culture. Non-Irish people might see the name “Siobhán” for example and think it’s pronounced “see-ob-han”, but it’s not, it’s “Shiv-on”, because Si in gaeilge is a “sh” sound, bh is a “v” sound etc. You don’t pronounce Irish letters the same as English letters, why? Because it’s NOT English. If people can’t pronounce it, then that’s their problem. I find her making fun of Irish names in front of Americans so sad, especially given the history

The funny thing is, she’s not even pronouncing her own name right. “Aoi” in gaeilge is pronounced “ee”, so Saoirse is pronounced “seer-sha”, I don’t know why she’s saying “sir sha”
