@dchall8
@dchall8 3 года назад
I'm going to take issue with the use of insecticide. Why? I've been doing my lawn as organically as I can since 2002. In addition to the benefcial fungi and bacteria, there is an entire class of soil microbes called microarthropods, or microscopic insects. Application of insecticide for no good reason temporarily wipes out these important contributors to your soil's health. Yes, I am having heart palpitations watching you scalp the buffalo. However, having said that, it is very illustrative to see the effect of topdressing with and without scalping. I predict you are going to lose the patch where it was topdressed without mowing. But if the scalped stolons come back through the topdressing, then this has huge ramifications toward leveling a lawn. Topdressing is one of my pet peeves. I have pictures of yards that have had 60 mil of topdressing applied every year for 40 years. They had to build barriers to hold the soil in and keep it off the sidewalk. The only reason to topdress is to change the drainage, because soil and sand topdressing will change the drainage every time. Golf courses have a different situation than neighborhood lawns with houses in the middle.
@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn 3 года назад
Thats cool mate your allowed to take issue with my choice to use the Acelepryn GR. Im not too sure if you guys get African Black Beetle over there (heteronychus arator) but we do here and they love maintained turf area obviously we do get a range of other turf pests too. There is an update to the renovation next week if you are interested.
@dchall8
@dchall8 3 года назад
@@theaussielawn I'm hooked, so yes, very interested. We don't get that beetle but we do get two other scarabs, Japanese beetle and June bug. We don't always get them, in fact we scarcely get them. It is their grubs we worry about. Usually we can predict a grub infestation, because the beetles will swarm porch lights in late spring. If they don't swarm, then you likely won't have a grub problem later in mid summer. If they do swarm, then, IF you think you might have them in mid summer, we suggest digging a square foot of turf and counting the grubs. If you have a dozen or fewer grubs in a square foot, no problem. If you have an uncountable mass of them, then go ahead and treat for the grubs. So IF you have a real grub problem, then do something, but don't anticipate having a grub problem and spray willy nilly. Also, most of the folks I hang with are organic, so birds are attracted to feeders and bird baths. If you have a few birds now and then, they will pick up the slack eating the visible insects in the yard. If you drop insecticide, the birds seem to know to stay away from the sick or poisoned insects. Another problem with having grubs is that the skunks, armadillos, and possums will sniff them out and dig the lawn to get them.

As an American growing St Augustine in Florida this fascinates me. We have been condition by the LCN and others that cutting this grass below 3" is danger danger . Scalping, scarifying and even bagging for the most part is frowned upon. What are the benefits of scalping and scarifying? Is this safe to do here in Florida and if so how often? Thanks Sir love the channel
@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn 2 года назад
Hi Robbie welcome and thanks for tuning in. I'm sure the LCN is an awesome guy and his doing a fine job with his lawn, However its important to understand there are many ways to skin a cat if you follow what I'm saying. It's worth noting that I hold a trade certificate in greenkeeping and completed it with credits and distinctions, so I sorta know my way around grass etc. I've experimented with my buffalo (St Aug) at many heights and here in Aus once you reach 4" it appears to become less drought tolerant. Most Australians mow their buffalo lawns at about 1 - 2" I prefer it a little longer at 2 1/2 - 3". Another interesting fact is most Aussie designed mowers will not even cut as high as 3" So I'm sure by now you are starting to get the picture that you are not going to kill your St Aug by dropping below 3". The concept behind the scalp is to thin out the canopy and avoid the spongy feeling you get when all the stolons / runners intertwine to a point that its no longer a pleasant lawn to mow or spend time on. This could be done annually or every 2-3 years it really depends on the situation. If you are curious to try scalping or scarifying but are not sure you wish to take the full plunge why not select a patch of your lawn even if it is only one or 2 mower widths wide and try for your self this spring. Keep it short for the season and see if its right for you. (side note if your lawn is in heavy shade id not go lower than 2") I have done quite a few buffalo related renovations on the channel, the latest being a scarify (which actually caught the attention of LCN ) Id be rather curious to hear your thoughts if you do decide to try it yourself. Feel free to email me or send me a PVT message on the facebook page or instagram. Cheers Brenton

Great video Brenton, super helpful. I have a Sir Walter lawn which is 3 yrs old and have cut pretty high every yr (9-10cm). Also have the same Toro mower as you and in summer cut it on max or half a notch below. I want to scalp it this year for some new growth and dethatching. 2 questions: - Given how high I cut it normally, how low can I safely cut it for scalping? - With the Toro, should i do it over a few passes to get down to the level required so it doesn't keep cutting out? Lastly, what sort of insecticide do you use? Cheers
@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn 3 года назад
G'day Peter firstly thanks for tuning in. Given the toro can struggle when it comes to scalping I would do it in a few passes dropping the height each pass, (maybe even consider side discharge and go back with the bag on to collect that then go again. It will be very slow going but it will be worth it, If you have a super recycler (the alloy base mower like mine) they only go down to 3cm where as the standard recycler (like my battery one goes down to 25mm) either way you can safely take your buff down to the lowest setting on a toro. If your south of QLD I would hold out until October, As for insecticide I run with Acelepryn GR in fact that was todays video. Once its scalped back be sure to give it a good drink some soil wetter and good feed with a good quality lawn fertiliser Hope this helps Cheers Brenton

Hey mate I’ve just subscribed to your channel. I’ve been having issues with my sir Walter buffalo. It’s always going to seed. So last October I air rated as I have some compaction, top dressed. And it has left my lawn even more lumpy Thant before. This year all I’ve done is fertilise and still have it turning to seed. It’s no longer soft and lush. I also think I have some thatch that needs removing. I’m very apprehensive to mow so low to leave the stolons only. I don’t want to kill my lawn. But if I mow really short as you’ve done in the previous Reno a week or so ago will the lawn rejuvenate with watering and more fertiliser?

Like you i was also keeping mine high , however my Toro got to the point i could not drive /push through it which i believe is a deck problem in the design and thatch build up, this spring i scalped it to the lowest setting airated it with a pitch fork , top dressed with sand and fed it and started using a cylinder mower on it set at about 30mm, so its looking good 6 weeks later and i am more than happy , i also now get sapphire stripes Because i am rural and in the beginning i had to fight off a lot of weeds that blew in over a good 15 months , but now its established i was confident to scalp and i am glad i did however i do have some Kikuyu thats crept in a couple os spots Lastly I love my Sapphire and glad you have chosen to tell others about it

@philrichmond5919
@philrichmond5919 3 года назад
@@Earthau utility mowers will cut lower, the Victa Mastercut will go as low as 8mm and the Masport to 13mm. They’re side discharge only though. Honda’s HRS216 won’t cut that low because it’s designed to mulch as well. Any mower designed to support mulching will have a greater minimum height of cut because of the airflow and air volume required to mulch. The same can said of bagging. We tend to think only of the solids, the grass clippings but rotary mowing is essentially suspended matter in a fluid, with the fluid being air. The more air it can flow the more solid matter it can carry. Utility mowers have a very short and open flow path so move air and clippings easily which allows lower cutting.

Hey Brenton, how do you determine if soil is compact, thus requiring airating?
@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn 3 года назад
There is a number of ways to help determine possible compaction issues. Poor growth, Water run off, hard ground, wear tracks / constant traffic etc.

Up here (US) we stick a screwdriver into the ground when it's dry and when it's moist. There's always going to be a difference in how hard it is to push and how deep it goes easily. We have found that if you core aerate, there is no improvement in the screwdriver test. However, if you spray a surfactant like baby shampoo, and water that in deeply (at least 1 cm with max of 3), after three weeks the entire yard takes on a different character. After that, when it rains I find my soil is almost too soft to walk on. Screwdriver sinks in easily to the hilt after shampoo and rain. Shampoo is cheap and you already have some. App rate is 100 ml per 100 square meters. You can reapply if you don't like the result after 3 weeks. Doubling or tripling the amount is not a mistake - the lawn can take it.

Yeah the screw driver test has been about for a long time and is quite effective. Have you got some formal Turf training mate?

@@theaussielawn Sort of. I studied engineering at an agriculture school and took a couple classes in horticulture. I thought I knew it all until about 2002 when I joined a lawn forum online. As it turned out, I had to unlearn everything I thought about lawn care (daily watering, mowing short, lots of chems), and learn about deep and infrequent watering, mowing high, and organic fertilizer. Since then I found some lawn care gurus and I pay close attention when they say something. Over the years since I've been asked to moderate three different organic lawn forums.

Why not raise it up and do it twice seems easier
@theaussielawn
@theaussielawn 3 года назад
Believe it or not I did exactly that in the main patch raised it up 2-3 notches then went back over the same pass on the low setting. I actually don't think there is much difference in time believe it or not because its the stuff down low thats hard to cut bit
