I provide spring lawn care tips for both St Augustine and Centipede Grasses. Spring is a critical time for warm season grasses. If you make a mistake during spring transition, it can cost you many weeks of having a green lush lawn. I would advise you to avoid spraying many herbicides on centipede or st augustine grass during spring transition. Wait until it is green or spray it before it begins to turn green. Providing nutrients during that time is a better option to help the lawn recover from winter.

Love your videos. Have centipede/ st Aug lawn in coastal NC. Normal cut is 4 inches. Seems do do just fine. St Aug greens up in spring before centipede for me. Thank you for your content and your time

Same in Georgia. Henbit, Deadnettle, Poa, Chicweed, and onion/garlic are what I’m seeing the most of. Bit of dandelion too.

I have the same issues with the weeds. I moved in about 3 years ago and the yard I have looked very similar to the one in this video. Now my yard looks a lot better than that yard but I still have a lot of weeds in it and this year I'm trying something different by mowing really high. I've been cutting it about 3 1/2 inches -4 inches high and I hate to say Ive been using that scotts bonus s... kind of helped and I've noticed a big difference in how full the grass looks but the weeds are still pretty bad. What's a good granular pre-emergent I could use need year. Spanish Fort, AL.

So, so far, I don't know if having kids around, get me distracted and did not pay attention, but you use 2 products to help the dirt? or just one of them? The granular or the liquids combination?

Should I be thatching centipede? I’m coming from up north and am not sure. The way centipede grows it seems to hurt the heck out of it. Any suggestions?
@mikehughes8023
@mikehughes8023 2 года назад
Thatching pretty much causes damage to centipede from what I have been told. You would have to get a product rich in molasses and then dilute with warm water to spry on the lawn. The molasses help feed the microbes that break down the thatch.

St. Augustine grass getting some love, am I dreaming, lol. Great stuff. If its cut at 3.5in or higher I think the st aug will win, unless its a dwarf cultivar of st aug such as seville for example, which like to be cut around 2.5 inches, then the height of cut would not be of concern and st aug could win either way. However some varieties of st aug are more agressive than others. For example Floratam is the most agressive of all st aug cultivars. There are 11 different cultivars of st augustine, each with varying characteristics.

I’m in Atlanta and mannnn I can’t stand it but I keep getting lawns that are mostly Bermuda but they have some fairly large patches of St. Augustine mixed in. I always tell the customer that I recommend killing off the St. Augustine and letting the Bermuda fill in. Centipede and St. Augustine are the bane of my existence!

@@pastelsliderz3097 Really?! Where are you located? Must be in cool season turf climate? I love Bermuda because it’s so resilient. You can damn near burn it up and it’ll come back. I also love that you can spray Bermuda with glyphosate when it’s dormant during the winter. Centipede and St. Augustine are so sensitive. At least in my area. Could be different where you are.

@@bryanaspinwall800 - I’m from South Louisiana as well. Bermuda just doesn’t last here. I’ve tried. St Augustine is the way to go. I have a front lawn that is about 3/4 St Augustine and 1/4 centipede and I find the centipede is disease prone.

Great tips!! Those products with the micronutrients look awesome! Looking forward to seeing this transformation! Looks like there is more centipede than st. Aug... if I had to choose, I would favor the centipede. I would think that if the lawn is continuously mowed low, that the centipede would take over. But I have 0 experience with warm season turf.
@lawncarelife

You are probably correct. Short mowing would probably stress out the St Augustine

Love your videos man! I’m in Atlanta and recently I’ve been seeing a lot of Bermuda lawns with St Aug mixed in. Makes treating them a pain. I’ve been using “southern” products with lower 2-4d content such as speedzone southern and trimec southern. Any tips for those hybrid lawns? I usually tell the customer that I recommend killing the st aug and letting the Bermuda fill in. Your thoughts?

New sub here! Quick question. I just bought my first home recently. Lots of weeds in my st. augustine. About 4-5 weeks ago I think I over sprayed the yard with a herbicide mix. Our local store for everything plant and lawn care recommended this 3-way max turf and ornamental mixed with rometsol for the initial spray. I used the recommended amount of both and only one application but it has browned up the yard A LOT. Almost to where an untrained eye would think the grass was dead. I've been watering it and it does seem to Slowly be coming back. I bought some Pro Peat fertilizer that is a 17-0-4 mix that I'm not going to use yet because I don't want to finally push the lawn over the edge or something and completely kill it while it's trying to recover so today I just went and got some malorganite. Do you think that would be beneficial for the lawn right now or should I still even wait for the grass to come back even more before applying that? Thanks for helping a newbie! Harsh learning lessons for me right off the bat!

Great tips...my question is: i sodded with Palmeto St Augustine..late last fall, it had a hard time taking off initially, i believe i had a fungus issue, which im told is commom with st Aug...how do you best treat it. Im in central tx, and now is coming up better but i see some wheats now..so should i use herbicides on new sod St Augustine or wait Your input will be appreciated Victir
@lawncarelife
@lawncarelife 3 года назад
I would wait until it is fully established before spring. You can use a fungicide if you're still concerned about that, but it's possible that the fungus is no longer active. Just might take a while for the damage to recover
