Beautiful faceted and cabochon sapphires in our inventory do not come out of the ground looking the way you see them on our site. They are cut, faceted, and polished from the rough corundum crystal after it's mined. Most of the time the rough sapphire looks like pebbles in unrecognizable shapes. However, sometimes you see the rare sapphire crystal that displays it natural growth habit. It's these rough forms of the sapphire crystal that you can find in our crystal section. The ideal shape of a gemstone's rough is called its crystal habit. For sapphire, it's a spindle-shaped bi-pyramid. Usually when the rough sapphire is very clean, it's cut and faceted into gemstone or polished into a cabochon, depending on how included it is. When it's not quite transparent enough to be faceted or when the habit itself is so beautiful that its worth preserving, the sapphire is left as a rough crystal specimen to be used in handmade jewelry or simply as a keepsake, reminding us of the beautiful order the nature strives for.
