Live performance at the New Roads School in Santa Monica, California under the direction of David Newman. Background video directed by Jake Michaels - jakemichaels.com Videography by Visionmixer Productions.
Background video sucks as has already been said - why would anyone want to see a video of random bs during a classical concert? This woman is one of the finest violinists today playing on the ex Isaac Stern 1717 Guarneri del Gesu. Wonderful performance.
Wow. This is amazing. I'm learning this piece right now. This is incredible. I will never be able to play it this well! Sarah Chang is truly an amazing violinist. However, I don't really like the background video, I don't really want to watch a video of random stuff during a classical concert, I'd rather just focus on the musicians and music.
Absolutely one of my favourite pieces to play. Sarah Chang's passion is what carries this performance even if there is a few intonation and spiccato issues. Her feeling trancends any errors that bother me. Not sure if its a mic/recording glitch but there are some timing issues that are a little distracting. Seemed like she was a little ahead like the mix is a little out. Fantastic heart felt and inspired performance.
omg! absolutely love this! such passion. and the intonation was spot on. the visuals take it to another level, for sure. and - as a violinist - i couldn't help noticing how she used the chinrest more as an accessory, as she was riding the tailpiece the whole time. (is she married...??;-) bellissima!!
most inane background I've ever seen, nothing to do with the piece. If anything the background should have been videos of something tragic like the scenes of concentration camps, scenes of the bombings of Dresen.
Excellent playing from Chang. Balance is poor, though - several times, in important moments, she is almost inaudible, and it is not her fault. As many others have commented, the video is awful.
I actually liked the video to this at about one minute, where you see a guy carrying a surfboard....I wanted to hear the Beach Boys at that point. It would have been much better than the tiresome Vitali Chaconne.
The schmalzy violin performance and the Late Romantic orchestration of Tomaso Vitali's (1663-1745) chaconne for solo violin and continuo make his work barely recognizable as a composition of the Late Baroque. The soloist's excessive vibrato is hideous and anachronistic. But most of the listeners are so clueless they don't even know what "continuo" is.
I don't like this performance at all. I find her vibrato ugly and overdone. The whole performance seems erratic. Then again after listening to the Heifetz version, everything pales in comparison.
The reactions to the background video show how people are so immersed in their "ordinary" existance that they don't realize how precious and unique it all is. It's not just the bees and the flowers, the stars and the clouds, the forests or the grand canyon, the geological and biological creations of millions of years... This everyday urban existence of ours is also part of the human drama, the smallest things, it's all part of the great unfolding, all equally worthy of this dramatic music. I too thought at the beginning that this music only fits the peaks of existence, the greatest beauty or the greatest tragedy. But the truth is, everything is "it". It's just a matter of perspective, where you are placing yourself as a viewer.
I have listened this one over and over again more than 100 times.. it's sooo beautiful. she poured her heart to every single note. so in love with this magnificent performance
Haunting music, beautifully played by Sarah Chang and the orchestra. She is an amazing artist. Wasn't too happy with the video direction of Jake Michaels. It was not in keeping with the music's wistful sense. The music is not modern as was the video style. Oh well, I saw and heard great music and great playing. That, is all that matters.
