It's interesting to see how she and Steven McRae had the same experience watching ballet while they were injured: they realized that technical details, though they are important, are not the most important thing. Artistry and expression are the goals.
Excellent interview again. The thing that always impresses me about Sarah Lamb, apart from her dancing, is how thoughtful, well informed and articulate she is.
@@rossi7056 I disagree. Shes a socialist. I'm glad shes enjoying what it has to offer OVERSEAS. Shes full of it. Where she got this idea that shes looked down upon by the unwashed country ignorant masses is beyond me. Everyone here admires and looks at a ballet dancer like they are the few, the ELITE, the rare beautiful creatures they ARE. so narrow minded.
@@kathymyers7279 You do know you're supposed to listen to the words and phrases in context? She never said anything remotely like you suggest. You have a vivid imagination. And surely you have no idea what a socialist is, not that it's even relevant to anything here. I guess you can't stand ballet, so it's a mystery what you're doing here if not trolling. Speaking of narrow minded, I can recommend you introduce a mirror into your life.
@@kathymyers7279 Sorry to say, but calling her "narrow minded" is only showing what kind of person you are. And yes, she is right about the way dancers and companies are supported in the US. They are non-profit, they depend on donations and benefactors, AKA rich "patrons". What is so horrible for the government to offer money and other benefits to artists? Labeling her as "a socialist" only speaks of your own convictions. And frankly, I am not sure if you really know what socialism is and how it operates. It is so sad to read such comments. I am writing this during the COVID pandemic, so I reflect on the issues artists are going through. The British government granted a good amount of money to the arts to support the artists and the artistic institutions. What did the US government do for Broadway, NYC Ballet, ABT? ..
Sarah, you amaze me all the time. Watching you dance is always such a joy. You have dazzling technique and incredible silken movement from Jewels to Winer’s Tale to Manon. You are such an inspiration.
Very illuminating on the cultural and economic differences between American and European companies. And Sarah's thoughtful and articulate conversational style mirrors the meticulous precision and detail of her dancing.
Shes such a lovely person. Ive always watched her dance but to hear her talk from the heart and how shes so honest and sincere i dont knw what i was expecting..now i know why she is such an amazing ballerina its because shes has that X the X factor and gives us the audience a glimpse of her powers with the Royal Ballet on stage. Thanks Sarah
My favorite ballerina from the royal ballet. In perfect match with Steven mc rea. just wish you never grow old, so we keep watching you dance forever. Love, from Argentina!
Being a fellow Bostonian, it is refreshing to see someone so refined and well spoken! She looks like the IRL Disney’s Cinderella cartoon!! Easily one of the best dancers to live! She captures the cultural difference of the arts between the UK and USA.
This interview serious is actually genius and I'm grateful you're doing this. Dancers tend to be very mysterious and quiet so it's so great to see how these icons even started dancing and to see closer into their world. Bravo!
I remember her at Boston Ballet in 2000, she was warming herself up in the large studio on the top floor and I thought to myself... Royal Ballet. Look at her now, great artist.
I’m watching this in 2021,less than a week after Steven McRae’s return to the stage after his ruptured Achilles tendon injury. Now I know exactly what Sarah Lamb must have been feeling after their performance of Romeo and Juliet and why it was as emotional for her as it was for him as they took the curtain calls! A very interesting interview.Thank you.
Bravo to Sarah Lamb's conversation to all of us! She is such an intelligent, gentle, very thoughtful person. And I do so love her dancing and pas de deux's. Lovely to see her paired with Steven McRae. Sarah has been blessed by God to have gone through such a horrible injury, and yet has worked hard to rehabilitate and get back to her high level as principal. Bravo!
I would adore a book about general life/goal-setting/living up to ones’ potential/overcoming adversity, etc. - her knowledge & vast understanding/articulation is beyond noteworthy...I want to know more about what’s in her brain. Fascinating! ❤️🙏✨
thank you so much for all these interviews and insights, and thank you sarah for giving the gift again and again. I was watching rubies with steven mcrae and you with a friend and we are both performers ourself and we described the performance like that as well: you all gave us the biggest present!
Astounding honest, self-aware, and philosophical in dealing with her physical recovery showing that Sarah Lamb clearly is a true artist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm not really a ballet fanatic, but I really enjoyed this interview. I came to this interview after watching the 2013 performance of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, which I really enjoyed as well.
I wish I could convey how much you have impacted me. Just from 2 RU-vid videos so far. Watching you dance feels like it made me more capable of dancing. Your beingness is admirable, inspirational and something to emulate to make me a better person. I have been in a better place mentally, emotionally and spiritually since seeing you dance for the first time a few days ago (on RU-vid). Sometimes, yes, you need a doctor, but artists save and change lives perhaps more than anyone. And when that influence is good...
I remember years ago when I was a runner. I was running 5-6 miles a day, at a good clip. On a whim, decided to take a beginners ballet class. 😳 I couldn’t walk the next day !
what a wonderful conversation. I've never had watched her in an interview. No just a beautifull dancer but so articulate, intelligent and honest when whe speaks. I always feel surprise when I realized how demanding are dancer with themself. I think she is so perfect when she is dancing.
Your comment about seeing perfection when she dances is so interesting to read when I just heard her say that ballet dancers all know that perfection is never attainable, but they still continue to try! So I guess she’s succeeding!
@@voraciousreader3341 Exactly, you are right. For my no trained eyes her performance is beautiful and perfect, and in my opinion, the most important, it is emotional, she can transmit feelings, it isn't just a serie of steps in a sequence with some music. She is perfectly able to tell a story through her dance. May be another professional dancer as expert as she is can see little imperfections to improve. Sorry for my English, it is very deficient.
Sarah Lamb is so intelligent, logical, and interesting. It's in English so she can't be compared to ballet dancers who are interviewed in a language foreign to them. But Sarah is so much more articulate than American ballet dancers interviewed from NYCB for example. She is very much a complete person. Not to mention a great artist.
Which specific inarticulate dancers are you talking about, please? Perhaps a better question is, how many American dancers are you even aware of, besides the infamous Mist Copeland? I think the trope about American ignorance is so old and tired and in many ways so untrue. I know you specified dancers, but I see this kind of comment far too often, when my experience as an American myself is so different. And what about Australians?? Do you find Stephen McRae “more articulate” than most Australian ballet dancers? And believe you me, there is a whole lot of evidence of uneducated, incoherent people in the UK online which I think more educated Brits like to forget about. Just watch reruns of the Jeremy Kyle show.
Sarah's and Steven McRae had a wonderful review of their performance in Manon. The critic called Sarah's interpretation the "Eternal Feminine". Unfortunately I can't locate a clip
I am deeply disturbed that Sarah got injured while performing a step in Manon where several other dancers got injured too. Is the choreographer a sadist? Take the got dern step OUT of the ballet, for heaven's sake. What's wrong with these people. This shows zero respect and caring for the dancers.
Wonderful interview. I know she probably meant no offense with her Oklahoma tractor driver stereotype, but she should be aware that it was a poor choice of phrasing. I am a pianist who trained at a conservatory in New York, and subsequently the Royal Academy of Music in London.....and just so happen to have grown up surrounded by cornfields in the humble state of Iowa. Yes, I can milk cows *and* play 5-voice fugues..ha... :)
"It's not like i grew up in the middle of Oklahoma driving a tractor..." The prima ballerina of Royal ballet and the Oklahoma tractor driver worths the same respect for me.
Ummm... Are you sure? All the comments about her father being brit and whatever, sounds like she thinks european artists are better than US farmers. Na, all we are the same.
I don't think it was a put down but an explanation of life experiences in a city versus the country. She is a very well spoken, thoughtful speaker. I also loved her comments about how art is treated in different cultures, something to think about.
I meant my cultural experience and upbringing in Boston was more similar to a city like London than to a rural American setting which some people imagine when they think of “America.” I would NEVER put myself above anyone else- and that was not my intention, nor do I believe that that is what I said.
Because it is the right thing to do. Why are Americans paranoid about support from the government but never get angry when it comes to big money and corporations?
Yes dear, we arent forced to support the arts. We just DO. And alot of Americans ARE AWARE of the ballet .noone just thinks a professional dancer dances " for dollar bills" around a pole. Wow.
I totally agree with you, especially depending on where you go to school. My friend went from a small Midwestern ballet company in high school to the Ballet West program at the University of Utah, and it definitely wasn’t a waste of her time, OR her intelligence. I’m not sure how many dancers Lamb knows from university programs, so, as the usual run of people do, she puts down what she didn’t experience herself, probably bc her sisters achieved university degrees and she didn’t. Even high powered ballet dancers have insecurities!
