TBH this is the first time that I've seen a slightly dickish side of Conan. He's not emotionally unintelligent himself, and he was just going to allow that to live on. Not in a funny way either.

6:32 So this exchange wasn’t as bad as it sounded on the podcast 😂. Conan’s pause was him evidently deciding whether to go with the joke as he usually does or keep the mood previously established since Sarah was sharing about her depression and therapy. But Sarah was just as quick and went out of her way to show she was ok with injecting humor while helping Sona out. Kinda risky but smooth way to make the guest and Sona shine. Conclusion: Conan is diabolical.

Conan is beautifully thin-skinned. He let’s us hear his heart, his insecurities. And between the braids of supreme intelligence he wants us to feel happy. I heart this guy. And Sona is a good friend to Conan, and he to her. They met through work, as many friends do, and have remained friends. That is awesome.

The therapist Sarah was talking about is Pamela Stephenson who was an actor and comedian for many years. She starred in the sketch show 'Not The Nine O'Clock News' along with Rowan 'Mr Bean' Atkinson, it was on this show she first met Billy Connolly. She became a psychologist in later life.

I am drawn to people who make me laugh. U can be rich, have power, be completely at ease with yourself, save a ton of animals, u name it, humor has me every time. Even before music, it was comedy. Conan could sell ice cream from a dirty van, and I wouldn't think he was creepy. I would even bring children around. I can spot a Mensch from miles away, he is good people, on top of that wit.

I believe good people build strong characters through their tough times. Our society is a little too afraid of bad emotions and bad times IMO, and puts too much value on avoiding tough emotions instead of tackling them. Anybody who is worth a damn as a person has struggled through something, and taken good lessons from their struggles.

I have already had 50 bad times and emotions already today. Alot sucks for all of us. Yes, I am using this podcast to stimulate my brain, because their is intelligence. Humor, because that is my core. And good questions, its okay, we all have similar garbage. Money doesn't make Conan know he is all things people love him. His humility and his real tough emotions have formed him. I think late night and comedians have had to sift through so much horror, just in the news, to make it hurt less. Who helps them?

Kinda interesting, Sona seemed to have stumbled into that liminal space between her and Conan's worlds. Like I think they are friends, they like each other. But he's famous, and she's only known because she's worked for him on and off for years (and I think she wrote a book?). She doesn't live that celebrity life, and those two do. They live weird lives where most of what they do is work, most social engagements are in some way performative or work related. They're friends, but they don't really just hang out like normal people. Even that close, Sona is kind of an interloper in the weirdness of celebrity life.

Interesting description - I feel that this is exactly what makes her persona so fascinating, that on the one hand the element you describe is clearly true, but then it also just very much *feels* that way because she has this incredibly natural style and on a closer look she has actually written that NY times best-seller, so in a certain sense she has made exactly that "normal", just an assistant character into the somewhat well known "the worlds worst assistant" character...

I've been in therapy often enough to know that a therapist has to have a clear line between themselves and the patient. When I was a teen, I once had a therapist who was starting out. He and I went out once to see a movie and get a bite to eat (no, not a date), and soon afterwards we both realized what a mistake it was. You can have a great relationship with a wonderful therapist, but they will never be your actual 'friend'.

Yep, Soma's joke was quick wit at its best. I laughed and appreciated it. Conan might have felt a twinge of pain owing to the complex dynamic 'twixt Sona and Conan. Maybe a new visit to their conveniently located HR representative is in order? That shite was gold, gold I tell 'ya! Sarah. Long have I admired her dark brooding and friggin' hilarious beauty. Remotely and sanely, mind you. But seriously the lady is a goddess and a comedy giant in my book. Her subversive skills are off the hook. I bet she could work clean and just kill too, not that it matters, just sayin' she is a mega talent in my book. I can't think of a single Sarah appearance over the years that wasn't a darn good time. I think everybody needs to work on themselves. Maybe not with therapy, but in some way or another. Thinking that you've had it harder than other people is one of the worst things you can do for yourself. You never know what other people are going through, so give them the benefit of the doubt and you'll be stronger for it.

2:20 it’s not that pain is the source of creativity, it’s that being creative can be quite painful in society, especially for kids and teens-and the tendency of creative people is to create. So you do it from whatever’s going on, sometimes that’s pain. But it doesn’t necessarily have to be.

I was listening to this only today on Spotify and when I got to this part I found it funny at first,but when I looked it up on youtube I started thinking about it more,and maybe Conan always intends "this podcast will help me make friends that I dont have to pay" as a joke,and despite him maybe knowing there's some truth to that,to him it just sounds like an absurd funny joke. But probably in this case,because they were coming out of a relatively serious conversation with Sarah,what Sona said was sincere,but hit Conan in a way he never experienced perhaps. Maybe this time he really stopped to think that he had to make a podcast just so he could chat and make friends and that's really sad if that's the case. I think these are great people and no matter their professional relationship,they are very clearly friends and Conan and Sona have nothing to worry about,from an outside opinion.

When I first saw this podcast I just assumed it was a nice extension of Conan's TV show. It gave his audience more to think about, regardless of what he called it. Had nothing to do with gaining friends by paying for them. To me the "need a friend" bit is sort of relatable too. On the other hand, if he had titled the podcast "Conan O'Brien Doesn't Need a Friend," I might not of been that interested in watching.

Wow, maybe I'm reading the situation wrong but Conan handled that in such a strange way. Sona made a good joke that was totally in line with the (comedic) premise of this podcast. Conan could've committed to the bit by making some quick self-deprecating remarks as he so often does but chose to play it as if he took it personally. Ok, that can be funny if you break the tension later on so that everyone can laugh about it. But then when Sona tries to take the conversation further by saying something sincere and nice about Conan, he coldly does a 180 and tries to change the subject to something totally different. Sarah thankfully addresses the weirdness of the exchange but even then Conan doesn't show any kind of warmth towards Sona. I hope they discussed the situation off-air because if I was Sona I wouldn't feel comfortable making any kind of joke at Conan's expense after what happened there.

@@JPkeo Me too, it can be slightly tiring if someone just always react quicker than the others, so this whole thing created something unexpected, which then gave Sarah a chance to really step up and save the whole game so to speak - in that sense, it felt not like the intentional behind-the-back pass, but rather like an inadvertent fumble of the ball, which another member of the team magically snatches to then drain that brilliant shot from way outside just in the nick of time.... :)

People are sitting here puzzling over why the joke landed with a thud, but the reason is obviously the delivery and the fact that she said it in the context of a serious conversation. Delivering a joke with a kernel of truth in it so earnestly at that moment was a risky move. I can see why Conan was hurt by it. Also, making deprecating jokes about yourself is different than other people making those same jokes. Some are fair game for others, and some are not.

i think when Sona said that, it really made him think for a moment. Everyone he interacts with on a daily basis (besides family) and considers friends, are people whom he employs. he probably had to think for a moment how many of his relationships are genuine. it's also probably one of Conan's deepest fears. Conan himself admits he needs a lot of attention, so it must be frightening for him to consider whether the attention he's getting is genuine or forced.

@@KhanhTran-yx2zd You're 100% right, but what I can't fathom is how Conan could react so oblivious hearing Sona literally repeat words that Conan himself has said, on this podcast, several times over. In fact, I think it's still almost *verbatim* the podcast description on all streaming services (haven't double-checked that yet). So it was *very* weird to me that Conan didn't recognize or at least roll with the joke, whether he remembered saying it or not.

@@jaerivus Yeah, you're right. It's puzzling why he reacted like that. I suspect that he reacted like that only because it came from Sona. I notice that Conan's method of coping with his fears and insecurities is by joking about them himself and turning it into something everyone can get a smile from, including himself. He's one of the best I've seen at self-deprecating jokes. I can only assume that he was taken aback by Sona saying those words because she's known to be honest and blunt, she just says things as they are. She is also close to him and knows him quite well. He's joked about it for so long (as a mechanism to downplay something that probably affects him greatly deep down), that upon hearing it from Sona, being who she is, he probably couldn't help but take her words seriously, if only for that brief moment. Maybe we're reading into it too much and Conan just didn't have something clever to follow-up with (which is rare).

And those who pretend to have power, put up a front that they are constantly busy or their schedule is full, because they don't have any power.

Clinical illness aside, there is no such thing as happiness without sadness, or elation without depression, I’ve experienced all and won’t trade it for your day walking mouth breathing Zoloft prescription, I’ve also never needed a therapist, I usually grab a shovel and do some actual work digging up real world perspective on how truly lucky I actually am, u should try it!

I rewatch the silence moment after Sona made that comment and it’s really not that bad after the first view. Only slight issue is the timing and cameraman catching Sona with that uneasy look which makes it slightly awkward. There are PLENTY of times where someone made a joke or comment about Conan and his initial response is staying silent for a few seconds with a small glare. But every time while Conan is “glaring” at whoever made the joke on him, it will be masked by the audience’s laughter OR Andy/Matt Gourley laughing in the background. But in this case there’s no one else laughing so it felt “serious”, but it really isn’t. It’s totally fine, really 😊

What Sarah Silverman said about feeling like her therapist was her best friend and then coming down to earth about it has been kind of the way I've felt about whether or not to see someone. Like, it's a transaction. I'm paying someone to listen to my problems. It just feels so self-indulgent. Like I need to pay someone to tell me I'm fucked up? Yeah, thanks genius. I didn't know that already. The thing I immediately compare it to is going to a strip club and buying a lap dance. It's a simulated connection. But really it's a money transaction. They don't honestly care about you. So why waste my time and money? I know it's not really the same thing but it's just where my mind goes to. Maybe that's why Sona's joke kind of hit me a little as well.
