Practicing Dönme (Donmeh) do not live in in Syria. There are just a few dönme communities left and they live in Istanbul and Izmir.

That picture has been proven to be the Bal Shem of London, not the Holy Bal Shen Tov. The Bal Shen of London was quite a controversial figure, and likely a Sabbatean. Maybe you can have that picture updated? Thanks!

Teachings of The Baal Shem Tov in Heaven Just found your channel and very happy. I have been very interested in the Teachings of The Baal Shem Tov I had a book about him years ago and Found Love of Life in his life. His story about a time he was driving his Horse and Wagon to visit & he noticed a Dog drowning in a creek so he lifted the Dog and put the Dog in his wagon. This was when Torah forbid touching Dogs as Not Kosher, This became a Great Story as it was a Blessing to Ya@W@h.

Dear Dr Abramson, there was a mistake in your talk. You say Sabbeteans are still exist in Syria at 7:25. It would be not Syria but Turkey, particularly concentrated in the west of Turkey. Sabbeteans exist, I think exclusively, amongst Turks, I have never heard of any Sabbeteans in Kurdish dominant areas. Btw, I love your jokes and actually sometimes the way that you announce your jokes are very sweet :)

you said the marriage to the torah scroll was antinomian. while I agree its weird and I couldn't conceive of it as a mitzvah wouldn't there have to be specific halakah prohibiting marrying a Torah scroll to qualify it as antinomian rather simply outside the Rabbinic ( and Samaritan, Karaite and Haymanot) status quo? it seems a little too specific to actually be prohibited; it seems like something rabbis would never even thought to prohibit. it does seem antinomian but is there a case for it neither being mitzvot or sin, just some weird shaman's illness/schizophrenia mystic ritual that brought him comfort for some reason; maybe it wasn't bad per se, just something we have no reason to ever emulate? that's so awesome that Svi took up a proto feminist messianic tikkun olam ministry to emancipate women's roles in Judaism as egalitarian. maybe the Donmeh influenced the later egalitarian nature of Baha'i.

Another great lecture , I didn’t know the Donme still existed , I thought they had disappeared , I’ve read that it was thanks to the Rabbis in Russia , who rejected all those heretical teachings, that this movement was contained and its expositors sent back to what today is Germany . Thank sir .
