Johann Sebastian Bach's much loved Chaconne for solo violin is performed at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin - in more ways than one. Sarah Willis explores this famous piece with the world class musicians performing it.
Sarah Willis is a British-American French horn player. In 2001, she joined the Berlin Philharmonic, becoming the first female member of its brass section.
She was born in Maryland, USA and grew up in Tokyo, Boston, Moscow and London. At age 14 she started playing French horn and then attended the Royal College of Music Junior Department in London, UK. She studied full-time at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, UK.
In 1991, she moved to Berlin, where she became Second Horn in the Berlin State Opera under Daniel Barenboim.

I think the reason why the violin is the best selection for the piece is that it's *specifically* written for it. The violin has its strings at an angle, forcing the player to arpeggiate and break the chords. Bach knew this and ran with it into immortality.

The brass arrangement is an absolute beauty. I'd love to listen to it in its entirety.

Yes the mandolin doesn't need to break the cord. But the violin does, and I think there is some agony in that, which I think is a feature and not a bug.

Cihan T Hello. I totally agree with you. I play violin. I've read privately (and very badly) the Chaconne as only an imperfect student. When I was young, I also believed the broken chords were a limitation, but now I'm sure the broken chords of the Chaconne are an essential part of the pathos of the piece. I would dare to suggest the pianists who read the piano transcription to play the chords imitating the broken chords of the original. When I hear piano versions, with its full chords, I feel that something of the feeling is missing. Well, it's only my opinion. Our Lord Jesus Christ bless you. Greetings from Lima, Perú.

Absolutely. Chaconne saved my life by showing me who I am and how life should be. Bach tried to create infinite peace.

Honestly guitar version in my opinion is the best in completing some of the harmony. I, myself, am also a Bach purist and don't believe in excessively adding notes to any of his work

As a classical guitarist I've always felt isolated from the rest of the classical music world. This video solidifies that view. The Chaconne is such an important piece for guitarists. It's considered by many to be the most monumental achievement one can make on our instrument. Shame to not see the guitar represented here. The Chaconne is a much more important piece in the guitar repertoire than any orchestral instrument, I would argue-- except, perhaps, the violin.

Thanks for sharing your personal view with us and our community. Let's hope the guitar one day reclaims its spot in classical music. All the best!

Thank you very much for this very interesting video. I have been working this piece on theorbo for several months, it is very useful for me! As you know JS Bach has published several suites for lute (although he actually not composed them on a lute) so it makes sense to play other Bach pieces on lute as well. I would have liked the violinist to answer Sarah's question: what do you imagine in your head when you play the chaconne: I always do this exercise with instrumental music, solo or in a ensemble, and usually it's a great help for performance; it works with Purcell, Monteverdi, Weiss, Mozart, Marais, etc. because these musics evoke human feelings and emotions. But with Bach... it's so abstract, that I can't do it - I often imagine kind of "cosmic" images, the big clock of the universe... but maybe that it is ? Sarah : your input ?

While this is nice, I must say that no arrangement or instrument can give as much emotion and power to this piece as the violin

To me, the Chaconne in the Classical Guitar sound like they were meant to be together.

Playing Bach in such a romantic style in my opinion does it injustice. Guy clearly knows what a chaconne ought to be, yet I couldn’t hear the emphasis on the second beat in his interpretation of the Bach chaconne.

I wonder if any violinist has ever hummed loudly the lowest notes in the chords as he played.

He doesn't understand Chaconne at all (the violinist). She tried to ask him Twice what do u think about while playing it and he couldn't give her an answer. Not everyone can relate to Chaconne.
@jean-yvesPrax
@jean-yvesPrax 2 года назад
I agree and mentionned that as well in a post, asking Sarah what her interpretation is. But it's not only about "chaconne"... you can understand what a chaconne is, play the good rhythmic structure, the good chords progression, the good notes when written... and still completely miss the picture in terms of "range of emotions". As a lutenist, an instrument of the continuo, I tried a funny experience : Biber has written a passacaille for violin, quite interior, mysterious, not to say mystic... and I applied it to accompany Marc Antoine Charpentier "Magnificat à 3 voix H73" quite dynamic and cheerful - same rhythmic structure, same chords, adapted tempo of course... it matches in terms of notes, but it does not match in terms of music.
