i completely disagree with adam’s refutation of the video essay’s point about subjective time shown via the recreated scenes. while it is, as adam points out, an inevitability of shooting, the discrepancies speak to tarr’s interest in temporality shown throughout the film, from the elliptical narrative structure that, like a tango, takes up forward and back, to the use of animals, dreams, and other non-traditional interlocuters to guide the viewer. these motifs are very present in the novel and much of lászló krasznahorkai’s work such the ‘melancholy of resistance’ and his short story ‘the last wolf’. as we see during the police report writing scene, the doctor’s note-keeping, and irimiás’ reporting on the villagers, there is a theme of surveillance but also of interpellation and reinterpretation: what one person sees is different, or otherwise consciously and explicitly rewritten. i think this idea of time and its construction cannot be separated from the surveillance culture of the soviet union while, yes, you *could* say the same about pulp fiction, as adam cites, pulp fiction is not a film explicitly interested in these themes. that’s why it’s possible to make these connections p.s. in the dancing scene they were actually really drunk, so although their behaviour was weird it is technically vérité

I think she meant that movies are more forgettable once you watch them on your TV or computer. Like she was angry at WB for putting WW84 on HBO Max. I kinda see why: People don´t talk about movies like Enola Holmes, Chicago 7 or Da 5 Blood...Then again, putting a movie in a theatre doesn´t make it memorable.

The furthest I got with a Tarr film was probably around 20 minutes into the Werckmeister Harmonies, which I still haven't finished, yet found it more accessible than any Tarkovsky one I've seen, who's one of my favourite directors. It’s funny that Jodorowsky doesn’t like Dennis Villeneuve’s style, but approved of Taika Waititi to adapt arguably one of his (and Moebius’s) magnum opuses. At this point, I think his distaste for Villeneuve’s Dune really does partly stem from resentment. Plus, it’s a real shame that The Incal is gonna be live-action rather animated, half of the appeal of the comic in the first place is Moebius’s art and I don’t think it can properly be adapted without an ungodly amount of CGI

Lazlo Kraznahorkai, the author of satantango, is notorious for long and winding sentences, as well as odd syntax, a style adopted by some in the late 20th century his syntax is also odd, with lots of asides and parentheses it has a sense of atmosphere and thickness in the prose, though the novel isn’t very long

Awesome. What was that like? I find that depending on the movie I'm just waiting for it to end when I'm in the theater. That's what happened with "Richard Jewell". Adam, the music is hardly a "10 second loop". It has a chord structure but gains variation through improvised voicings and counterpoint. The very soft but quick attack on the patch may resemble the unsteady timing of a child but the commitment to theme and the harmonic minor scale indicates something more competently devilish. and the "tango" scene clearly resembles theater, with the accordionist playing pretend like children with everyone else, unwittingly for an audience of one child who is acutely losing her innocence. We each see that it looks fake, you just choose to interpret it as unintentional. I do feel somewhat bad for anyone starting with Turin or Satantango tbh, Werkmeister is really the best introduction to Tarr vocabulary

Exactly. I also think Adum is looking at the whole film through too strict a lens of realism. I think the film dips into surrealism/expressionism often, with this scene being a prime example. It’s supposed to be an exaggerated, trance-inducing illustration of their misery. Bela Tarr films are miserable, and even when characters are dancing and supposed to be having fun, they don’t talk to eachother and they are more trying to have fun then actually having fun. They sway restlessly, tirelessly trying to summon some existential levity that won’t arrive. It’s my favourite scene in the movie, and the bad accordion playing that loops just sucked me in to such an atmosphere and put me in such a trance.

In the middle of watching part 3 of Satantango I fell asleep and I was so pissed cause I had to rewind back to where I was when I feel asleep. Watched the whole thing but fuuuuck. For 7 hours for it to be a 5 or 6/10 was disappointing but idk was kinda worth taking it off my watchlist. And I had literally all of the same criticisms of Adum for Satantango.

We definitely have movies with subtitles in México. Actually, those are the best showings because most people hate reading and sometimes you have the whole place just for you. I watched the new Spider-Man both ways and the difference is huge, the first time was the subbed version and there were literally 5 people including myself, the dubbed version was packed as fuck with those clapping and screaming people you always mention.

@Jonathan Jones some are charming, I adore the shrek dubs for example, but I much preferred how it was before like 2012, when the only movies that got dubbed were kids movies
@boxstory3756

@@ernestoramirez4012 the dub for SpongeBob, in particular the Spongebob movie is one I still prefer over the original English version. Part of it is because I grew up with the Spanish dub, but I also just like a lot of the jokes more. Dubs are interesting in that way. Kids show dubs are pretty fun in general but yeah, for a lot of movies that aren’t kid aimed are mixed. Some are good some are bleh.

The music in Sátántango is my favorite part and is one of the main reasons why I’ve rewatched it a couple times I like the film mainly for it’s atmosphere and characters, I don’t really care about digging into it’s “hidden meanings” or “overinterpreting” it. I really recommend the book though especially if you want to get into the story more, it’s a great book and the film follows it quite well
@koskazoli2841
@koskazoli2841 2 года назад
Yeah I relistened to its music many times while work. I kinda like the moodiness and repetitive nature of it. I think Tarr himself is also sick of people overinterpreting his films, even he thinks half of it is bullshit. I don't know about the cat. I also thought that was a lie, but otherwise Tarr seems a really honest person.

If The Matrix Online is still canon, then there is an explanation for what caused the scarcity of recources (human batteries) that caused the machine civil war: the socalled Oligarchs demanded and used more and more of them/ those humans for slave labor. I don't really like the whole concept of the Oligarchs, to be honest.

Well I've see The Matrix Resurrections and it wasn't that good. Just a collection of making reboot sequel and just make these two characters back from the death and some weird choices that I didn't appreciate after the third film which felt pretty empty. There are some cool parts of the movie felt like in a different dimension of the Matrix, but the story and the issues were pretty tamed. I wanted to enjoy it, but it just like The Matrix Revolutions all over again compare this one just bringing characters needed and some don't needed just felt kind of weak and safety. Wanted more action, gritty, and mature, except this one just felt like way too cleany.

Guys I saw the new Matrix and the first HOUR NOTHING HAPPENS. It's the most boring thing ever. As Jay Bauman would say, "This is the latest entry into the continued pop culture equivalent of The Chris Farley Show." Remember the Matrix? Remember Neo? Remember Jada Pinkett Smith? Remember the cat? You liked the glitch cat gag right? Remember the train wreck video games from The Matrix? No one needs to waste their time on the movie. 3/10 Edit: nb4 hurr muh commentary and politics. You can't polish a heaping piece of shit like this and expect a diamond underneath. Defending dribble like this movie hurts your credibility as a critic. Don't reply thanks.
