Huh? That's WHY he's indispensable. If it wasn't for him, those films would be forgotten and ignored, and simply BORING. Which is the worst thing a bad film can be.

@@Lixxie612 it was originally his shirt, he used it when they met in his memory. I would say, that was the shirt he was using when they met, you can see at the end Mandy drew that moment she saw him for the fisrt time, and the aura of a tiger, like that's what she saw in him and why she fell in love. Then, during the relationship, Mandy would use it as it was something specially near and warm because of the memory. Then she dies, he puts on the shirt that is somehow a symbol of their relationship, they are doing this together.
Nicolas Cage did a q&a in those sunglasses, that gold jacket, & leather pants that ended with him talking about how his dream role is Captain Nemo because his first love is the ocean. Literally the first thing he ever loved.
Dredd didn't flop because of it's simple premise. Dredd flopped because the marketing was just terrible. All of the trailers did nothing to show how cool the movie was and just pushed the 3D gimmick that everyone was sick of by that point. I love Dredd but even I didn't go see it in the theater because I was like "Oh great, another 3D cash grab."
"You have Star Trek, and I have David Lynch" is such a great moment between these two. Also, I have to say, not only was Dredd one of the best movies I've seen in a long time, but it's also theoretically one of the best sequel-spawning stories. "Dredd responds to a crime and things escalate" is a premise that could weather several dozen seasons on Netflix and never get old.
I have my doctorate degree in biology and i can confirm that we are trained in special weapons and tactics and well as being experts in hand to hand combat.
"The Predators want to use his autism to make Super-Predators. That is a thing that I just said, that happens in the movie." -Jay "It's the worst thing I've ever seen. I know it's kind of a joke, that's just something you say, but I feel like I really might mean it this time." -Mike The Predator asks the age-old question: Why make the choice between ridiculous and awful when you can have both?
Predator and Worst Movie ever shouldn't be in the same sentence. We already had a lot of people saying that with AVPR. AVRP is a better movie than this, and it is both ridiculous and awful. But it's also at least a real Predator movie.
Jay says that, after Mandy dies, THAT'S when the crazy starts. I can't help but feel like he forgot the part where some of the cult members go into the woods and summon motorcycle demons by playing an evil ocarina.
The opening song, "Starless" by King Crimson, is perfect for this movie. It's a really long song, and the first half is super somber and beautiful, and then halfway through it takes a hard turn and becomes very weird, dark, and dissonant until the end.
My girlfriend thought the movie they're reviewing is called "Mandy and the Predator". I want to see that movie where Nick Cage teams up with a predator to hunt down a cult that killed his girlfriend.
"I think the people that watch us are into movies and want to see creative, different things..." *Throws head back maniacally and begins to repost the same Plinkett quotes from nearly a decade ago*
Mandy hit something in my brain I can’t describe, but haven’t felt since sneaking up late at night to watch HBO when I was 9 years old. Unforgettable imagery. Can’t wait for Panos’s next movie.
One thing I think should be mentioned about "Mandy" is the music from the late composer Johann Johannsson. The score definitely adds to the hypnotic feel and tone of the film -- it makes you feel like you're on an acid trip.
"If you Google him, if you look at a picture of him, he just looks like any average Star Wars fan." They should have put up a picture of Rich Evans when Jay said that.
Strange comment, but I have an anxiety disorder, and when I'm feeling keyed-up or nervous, I throw on an episode of Half in the Bag. There's just something soothing about listening to a couple of hacks talk passionately about cinema and crack jokes about Nicolas Cage. Love your guys' work! I don't often go to the cinema, but now I'd really like to see Mandy. Thanks for being radical
Thomas Dixon I suppose 'anxiety-relieving' is subjective, but I can give you a few names! SomeOrdinaryGamers is also a channel I watch when I get keyed-up; Mutahar is a computer engineer overflowing with charisma who's probably best known for his browsing of the deep web! I love his Virus Investigations videos, too. He also has Let's Plays, Creepypasta readings, and lots of other game-geared content. He has this very calming air about him; Deep Web Browsing is also something I throw on when I'm anxious 😊 Let's see, who else? Oh! Search "Monster Factory" and look for the video playlist by Polygon; in but a few minutes your anxiety will melt away to be swiftly replaced by gut-splitting laughter. It's also a video game-oriented series; more specifically, a celebration of character creator systems in video games! They make the CRAZIEST stuff that's just an absolute riot, and you won't find a sense of humor like Justin and Griffin's anywhere else. I *strongly* recommend you start with "Exploding Shepard's Face Bones in Mass Effect 2"; that and "What if Dark Souls Were Made of Pizza?" both of which are pretty much exactly what they sound like, haha. Down the Rabbit Hole is also a soothing channel! Fredrik is something of an internet historian, extensively cataloguing such phenomena as Chris Chan, vaporwave, The SCP Foundation, and many, many more. He also has a soothing voice, and he's very well-spoken, to boot! His content is fascinating. I hope you find these recommendations to your liking! I'm sorry that we can empathize regarding our anxiety issues, but it's always nice to find camaraderie with others who share the same struggles as you. I wish you a soothing, anxiety-free night - or morning... afternoon... wherever you are! I've found anxiety is much so easier to fight with laughter and curiosity. Again, I hope you enjoy, and please take care! 💜😊
Aw, well thank you, Jacob! You're pretty awesome, yourself - you could have just looked at my comment and thought "wow, that's nice", and left it at that, but you took the time out of your day to leave your own comment with such kind words! I'm always happy to give recommendations, especially regarding RU-vidrs - anything I can do to spread the word of their awesome content and hopefully get some more exposure and viewers who enjoy their work is something I'll do happily! And doubly so for someone else who might be struggling with the same issues I have 😊 And this is just a teensy part of it, but since RU-vid is kind of notorious for having nasty comment sections, whenever I comment on something or reply to someone, I do my best to put forth some positivity and kindness to hopefully combat that reputation. I get kind of sad when I scroll through comments that are mostly negative, hurtful, or outraged, so I just like to fight fire with glitter and sparkles, hehe. ✨ Thank you again, Jacob! Your comment made my night 💜 Wherever you are, whatever time it is, I hope you have a lovely day!
This recommendation led to my husband and me driving out to a scenic overlook to watch 'Mandy'. We watched it on our tablet in the car as it got dark outside. It was amazing. Thanks RLM
No, it's quite right, in this movie he does act. He doesn't try. He actually does. And that's because Mandy is exactly what you do with an actor like Cage.
Pretty sure Dredd got no studio support on advertising. I think it did better in the UK where they actually did spend a bit. But Dredd was damned good.
@@ashesanddiamonds2692 that's a fact ofc but at a glance 2000AD comics is still pretty big in the US but still remeber reading an article about how poorly they funded Dredd's advertising in the US. Karl Urban talked about it in interviews google and you'll see, just a damned shame as it was such a fine film and a breath of fresh air.
If Frank Frazetta was an unimaginative hack. Last time I checked he knew how to combine more than two colors and his action paintings had a lot of clarity and energy.
All I could think when I left the theater after this one was "Somebody's kid had autism and they wanted to make that kid feel better about themselves REALLY REALLY bad."
Jack Rogers I see it as more of unrefined ideas on autism being pumped into a Hollywood film. It’s not terrible, and autism may be the evolutionary future of biological humans. But every idea was handled with as little care as possible. Like a hipster writer had big ideas but couldn’t conceptualize them into a film.
I totally had the same reaction regarding Brown's character. Had no idea he had died and pretty much just assumed he was dead because he stopped showing up. It makes me feel better that I wasn't the only one.
I'm glad you mention Dredd near the end. That's the first movie I though of when I finished watching The Predator and thinking "can good modern remakes/reboots of old action movies still be done well?"
The ending of the predator is ABSOLUTELY a 13 year old kids wet dream UH THE PREDATOR GIVES THE PPL COOL SUITS TO FIGHT THE BIGGER PREDATORS AND THEY LOOK AWESOME LIKE IRON MAN SUITS WITH A BUNCH OF GUNS
Dear god, please tell me that's a fucking joke. I refuse to give that film my money so I haven't seen it, but I thought I'd heard the limits of it's awfulness.
borderline It's true. The Predator(character) was very good looking when it was an actual costume but giant CG Predator was very distracting. Also giant Predator dogs, complete with dreads, are very silly.
Oh no, he's being serious. I watched it last weekend, and just when I think it can't get any more awful I see the ending: there's an autistic child who's now been put in charge of a secret military base where they're using an Iron Man suit. I shit you not.
They modified Arri Alexa’s to work with vintage Panavision lenses to get that film look. Most of it was captured in camera with a small percentage being post-process. Panos wanted to shoot Mandy on film but budget constraints forced him not to.
Im autistic and one of my cousins has tourettes, and Hollywood/TV studios have no idea how to write either properly. And when either show up in TV or movies we just laugh.
About Dredd and dumb audiences, Karl Urban claims it's a marketing failure, not a failure of the movie itself citing that the DVD sales were 750 000 in the first week. And I didn't hear about it from anywhere but people who I know. I also loved it.
Mr Fuzzy Green that's exactly the type of mentality Jay and Mike are talking about, slight a story is not a bad thing, the notion it is gives credence to making trainwrecks like The Predator.
I'm glad Mandy got some love on this channel. Yes it's definitely not for everyone, but people should really see this on the big screen at least once if they get the chance. I can't wait to see it again in theaters at least a couple more times.
Saw this as my birthday gift with someone who hates these kinds of films, that's love. This film is really quite good if you're into psychadellic imagery. That score too.
I understand that, if seeing the movie would mean I had to cover some additional expenses, I'd think twice as well. As for the film being put on more screens, sadly that's not up to the filmmaker... not only is it a fairly low-budget film, it's also for mature audiences AND it's not even for the general public, it's quite niche to a certain extent, so putting it on more screens would inevitably, probably result in loss of money as opposed to an improved box office result... which I'm guessing is why the film was released online a week ago.
Okay hear me out here. I love Shane Black. I like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and his neo noir comedy style. But that style does not mesh well with the Predator Mythos. The original was so great because on the surface it seems like a generic 80's action sci fi film, but the way John Mctiernan crafted the film was amazing. It is a slow burn like a fine cigar. The film starts as 80s over the top action. Then it slowly is stripped away into a foray of a primal cat and mouse game. It is the most dangerous game, but an alien is the hunter. The incredible score, the tension, and suspense. This new film just doesn't have that. I could not of thought of a better director to make their comeback for this film than John Mctiernan. He directed the greatest action movie of all time(Die Hard). And why is it great? Because the guy understands suspense, setting up the environment, setup/payoff, and nuance. Hell, I would have been fine if Black just wrote the script and did punch ups like he did for the first film. Mctiernan is a master of his craft and deserves to pull a George Miller ala Fury Road return. What is your guys thoughts on this?
Before: Being trapped in a claustrophobic space with an unknown monster. A relentless stalker endlessly hunting you down in the night. Lost in the woods being hunted by a alien. Now: Learn their origins and culture! Big faction war! Gratuitous effect shots! Deeeep lore! Let's explain all the mystery! Look at the creature killing people! I really hate what they've done with Alien, Predator and Terminator. Three of my favourite action sci-fi's they've ruined.
@@tadpolegaming4510 That turned out remarkably well considering the production issues that it had. I wish we could have had a sequel set entirely in 2029.
Let's see what Tim Miller does with Terminator. He's the best director the franchise has had since Cameron. If that fails then that's the final nail in the coffin.
Writing an essay on Tourette Syndrome portrayal in mainstream media, and the Predator (2018) is one I'm mentioning. I'm so happy that you guys touched on the topic. As someone with Tourette Syndrome, it's so refreshing to see people actually understand that it's not some "swearing disorder." Great video and great points! Will def be using in my essay
Fun fact: the actor who plays Jeremiah Sands (the evil cult leader) in Mandy is named Linus Roache, and he also appeared as Thomas Wayne, Bruce Wayne's dad, in Nolan's Batman films. I thought his performance was fantastic and Oscar-worthy (in Mandy, that is).
I could be wrong, but I was under the impression he would test his LSD on the tiger. I think he said something like, "You know it's good when she's calm." Which raises the question, what would LSD do to a tiger.
I believe the "You know it's good when she's calm" is in reference to him not grabbing the gun when the blood-soaked mad-man shows up - he thinks he's safe from Cage because the tiger isn't reacting to him.
Just saw Mandy on dvd- amazing. The cinematography is groundbreaking imo. Extreme Lighting, interesting editing, dream-like lens flares . Never boring . Probably the best Nicolas Cage performance ive seen since Leaving Las Vegas.
I relate to what Jay says re: cheddar goblin and the world doesn’t care about your problems because back in like 2nd grade I found out my grandmother died while the tv was playing a Wishbone salad dressing commercial. I barely remember my grandmother’s voice but that stupid commercial jingle has been etched into my mind for the past 25 years. Genius move on the director’s part and sure enough that exact same Wishbone commercial is up on RU-vid these days: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-aA13DxM2BO0.html Anyway, make sure you turn off the tv when you give someone bad news.
“Get to the choppers” was the most eye rolling moment 😴. And they turned her into the damsel in distress by the dart gun so they can have that rescue scene - absolutely hilarious 😂
Don't watch movies on drugs. Drugs are meant to help time pass when you're bored. Movies are the same in that regard. Go to baseball game or a mormon wedding on shrooms. I did and it was pretty fun.
@@travismcnasty4239 lol if you do psychedelics drugs to pass time they're eventually going to drop kick your soul off of a roof. Don't disrespect psychedelics, they are for serious introspection and being emotionally vulnerable with people. They can be really fun, but they don't exist just to be fun.
I like how in that bathroom scene in Mandy there was just a wide shot with no cuts. From a movie so stylized such a scene would get a lot more focus, lights, quick cuts and him looking into the mirror and shit but i think on purpose it had nothing but him thrashing around! The emptiness and the stillness was nice!
That goblin commercial came on and the 7 of us audience members in the theater just glanced at eachother and started chuckling. At that moment I think we all realized that things were taking a major turn towards goofy city, with the next stop being the snorting a heaping pile of coke off of that glass shard. Had us rolling. Best $5 I've ever spent in my life, honestly.
Predator is a classic film something we can all agree on. Predator 2 and Predators were better than they had any right to be - both were decent sequels. The Predator looked terrible from the trailers and I'm not shocked or surprised by the critical reaction.
Alien vs Predator showed that they can work together with other species as long as they are worthy and honorable. AvP: Requiem showed that if you make a movie too dark for a theater showing, you get a shitty movie.
I enjoyed Beyond The Black Rainbow and it sounds like Mandy is very similar. BTBR starts out so psychological and ends as a slasher film. Mike and Jay talk about a switch for Mandy as well between the first and second acts, it sounds like a Director's signature. I can't wait to see what Panos Cosmatos does in the future. Also, I see that Elijah Wood is listed as a Producer, he is really pushing a lot of indie stuff now a days.
gobzdzilla yeah and remember a lot of the additional writing for predator? That was an uncredited Shane Black as well who brought all the good humor in too. "You're hit, you're bleeding man!" "I ain't got time to bleed!" "Oh, ok!" So yeah, gotta take the good with the bad.
I think that was your best ending yet. Another amazing video, I honestly think I can and will learn about script writing from just listening to you dissect movies. This is better than film school was.
Thank you for showing my favorite movie of all time Apocalypse Now. Any time I can get a glimpse, I'm happy. Even if it's the half naked, drunk, bleeding Martin Sheen scene.
There's so much terrible in this movie they didn't mention nearly enough. The predator using the thumbs up severed arm. Nobody has mentioned this. Why the hell does a wormhole opening spaceship have intakes? This needs a Plinkett review.
JohnnyZenith And the kid in the movie is so pointless...he’s the central part of the movie but he could be completely removed from the story and the movie would work better...it would simply be that there’s a dissenting Predator that wants to help us against the rest of his species
I completely agree with Jay about the second viewing clicking more with Mandy. The first time the beginning halfs slow pace felt a bit sluggish but the second half was a fantastic conclusion. On the second viewing, knowing that I liked where the movie was going, I just let myself be immersed in the world and enjoyed it even more.
When I first read this I thought it was 1 movie called "Mandy and the Predator". I was picturing a goofy road-trip movie with a sorority girl trying to find herself and her estranged father while her buddy, the predatory, hunted down commandos for bloodsport. Now I'm really, really sad I'll only get to see that movie in my dreams...
