Mbongeni Ngema should be recognized and acknowledged he did something that many producers were afraid to do he fought directly through acting and music against the system that oppressed and targeted black lives.
Ikr? I saw Sarafina performed on stage in my country. Most of the cast were teenagers. They were all St. Lucian and had convincing South African accents. They were a talented bunch.
The men behind (music crew), sholud have been equally given the same attention. In my view, rhey have stolen the show. Their passion for their work has an untold effect for the viewer, how they dance while playing, whoops! dancing style has spoken more. This music crew lol is the best in the world
There are so many musicals that depict fantasy. This one gives A dose of reality. There should be more Sarafina's welcomed with open arms to the stage!
One of SA's best actresses. It's a shame she developed that Michael Jackson skin disorder a few years ago (I can't spell out the name of it but I can say it)
@@subzeromidnight5388 It is not a shame she developed vitiligo, I am happy she stopped hiding behind makeup. She is extremely beautiful and I am happy she is comfortable in her skin. There is NO SHAME in having vitiligo, it’s like there is shame in being black or white.
Tears flow freely from my eyes every time I watch this movie. The pain our people endured and continue to endure, is immeasurable. When shall this oppression cease??? We continue highlighting it but not enough has been, at least not where we are at the moment. God bless motherland Africa!
Saew it live on stage, enjoyed one of the cast, as he visited my sister in our apartment. 2015, I am watching this clip, listening to the soundtrack, and, dancing in my car! This music will never grow old Mr. Hugh Masekela, the master musician!!!
Actually the music is by Mbongeni Ngema who wrote the play as well, Hugh was in exile ,Mbongeni put the show althogether by himself, he also won a Tony for Woza Albert
I loved the First song so much... here are the lyrics.. Pretty Mama They call you pretty Mama Oh you Pretty mama They call you pretty Baby Oh you Pretty baby They treat you like a lady You smile for another gentleman But when I send you chocolate and flowers You say I make you vex You give your Junior sister the chocolate You throw out my pretty flowers for your window You break my heart in pieces You make I wanna cry You make palaver You make palaver, Sarafina Sarafina, when you talking the way you talk Body temperature begins to rise Sarafina, Sarafina, you’re the one Sarafina, Sarafina, please don’t run away from me I love you, Sarafina I love you, Sarafina Sarafina, Mama Oh! Sarafina, Please don’t run away from me.
I dropped a year while watching, just to realize how far they have come. This was prophetic indeed. We salute everyone who did their part. It's been a journey. God bless you
I was in New York that year with other students on a theatre tour and; unfortunately, at that time, was ignorant to what this musical was all about. How I regret that, because I would have loved to have seen it. It still has the same power that it did decades ago!
I saw the musical at age 12 in Germany many, many years ago. I remember crying, feeling terrible pain and giving standing ovations to the artists in the end. That musical made me understand on an emotional level what apartheid was, even though I had no connection to South Africa in any way.
Being around that time and being the kid i was,I grew up listening to this song and it was awesome...in 80's they would bring us there songs and movie theaters in our school and gathering to get entertained was and still is something i will never forget.keep up sarafina family and may you age gracefully.loved💕
I passed on my high school prom in 88, and went to see Sarafina! on Broadway with my date instead. Best Broadway experience to date. I feel sorry for those who only know the musical through the movie. It doesn't even come close to the live performance. Hopefully you can get a small sample here. The production was robbed at the Tony Awards by the way.
What is real name of Sarafina? Travelling to SA soon. Could I meet with these wonderful people of Sarafina in JHB at Park Station then go with them to the Mall of Africa and enjoy ourselves there?
I will never forget the day I went to see them in Philly with greetings with friends when I was the tender age of 18. I'd never heard anything like it. Their voices were so outstanding! The emotions they displayed as they sang of the atrocities of the apartheid were felt deep. We played that soundtrack often and today I am back there again hearing them on RU-vid. And wasn't Sarafina a pretty mama!
How times flies like win.We thank GOD for the fighters. We appreciate them a lot and proud for their work which has enable many youths to have education and many more.
Timeless gem!
