Maybe this election was the last straw for him personally and he just doesn't want to deal with this anymore, especially if it's going to endanger his family in some way. So he did his best to get rid of literally the only thing his opponents were able to hold against him, and he'll just fade into the background now. We'll see if I'm right in the near future I suppose, if Carl just retires from the scene in the next few years then that pretty much confirms my theory.
