The controversy surrounding Nestle’s Maggi Noodles has fast become a nationwide issue after a series of food safety inspections across the country reported Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and lead, way over the permissible limits.
Taking cognizance of the issue, the Central food safety regulator -- FSSAI ordered Nestle to recall 9 variants of Maggi noodles from the market. Meanwhile, insisting that Maggi noodles are safe for consumption, the management in Nestle decided to recall the products.
This controversy has led to a larger debate on the legal framework concerning quality control and monitoring of food products in India where instances of violation of such parameters is not only restricted to the unorganized market but has been reported many a times from major MNCs.
Zooming out from the controversy surrounding Maggi noodles, we discuss what strong steps the government needs to take to uphold the larger issue of public health which often become a casualty.
