The main reason I got this charger is because I am trying to get rid of usb A ports. I have 5 devices that charge via usb C and one that needs at least 45W PPS, so this really did the trick. It might not be perfect in every area but having 4 usb C ports and a relatively small size does put it ahead of many multi-port chargers if you mainly care for usb C, especially if you live in Europe where the Anker 747 is not available. I was also lucky finding it discounted at 80 dollars. I'm glad I didn't make a bad purchase, thanks for another great video. By the way it doesn't just support Samsung's super fast charging (25W), it also supports their super fast charging 2.0 (45W)

Kinda off topic, but in your intro, you say "always ask questions if you don't understand something". I've applied that to school. It sucks that I have to admit incomprehension, but when I do ask questions in my classes, it's very rewarding to see my question as a catalyst for other students to ask their questions. And I also understand the topic better too.

@@dayulPHThe Satechi 165W adapter also doesn't work reliably in combination with the Mous wireless MagSafe charging pad A669. Sometimes (after a renegotiation is triggered, it seems) the Mous pad is shut off: I put a phone on the pad and the phone doesn't charge. Then if I unplug and plug in the Mous pad, it does charge the phone. Because of this behavior I use the Satechi adapter only to charge devices wirefully.

@AllThingsOnePlace

So, the Satechi is limited to 100 watts on one port but so is the Thunderbolt 4 port. So, it would get the 100 watts it expects. The only laptop I know of that uses the 140W capability is the mac book pro, which this adapter doesn't support on one port. In terms of power banks, the Anker 737 power bank will drain itself dead before it overheats, the Baseus 100W power bank will do the same. I think everything else I have tested doesn't have the power capability or overheats.

I bought this during the Prime Day sale but ended up returning it. It will not charge the only 2 100W devices I have, a Dell XPS 15 laptop, and an EGO PAD5000 inverter. Didn't matter which cable (100W capable or otherwise), it simply refused to charge at all. Using a cable w/ built-in watt meter it would briefly display "0W", cut off, and repeat over and over again, like it was having trouble negotiating. I requested a replacement but it had the exact same problem. Apparently it's a universal issue with these, there are similar reports on Reddit with it not being able to charge a certain HP Elitebook laptop, Framework laptop, and an Anker power bank. Oh well. I ordered a second Baseus 100W instead, I've had no problems with the original one I've been using daily for over a year now. EDIT: I posted a video of it happening in my Amazon review.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
Thanks! Yeah, I use a USB C to Barrel adapter with my HP laptop, works flawlessly with this adapter, this laptop literally only charges from a HP or Dell branded USB adapter. I want to explore the Dell protocol more, I have the Dell USB adapter that doesn't do normal USB negotiation to check out, time is the issue on that. Satechi does claim this is really made for apple devices and from what I can tell in the Dell and HP manuals I've looked at they don't actually state anywhere that it supports USB PD and to only use branded adapters from the OEM. Lenovo also doesn't like 3rd party adapters. It is too bad the Satechi isn't more broadly compatible because it's a great power supply but they are just not allowing it to connect to some devices or it has a limited implementation of USB C PD, it's probably like one bit not being flipped or something but that makes it not work with a lot of devices. It has issues with some Anker power banks too. When your power adapter needs a firmware update...

I am truly amazed that this power adapter, totally beat out the Baseus! Chart topper you aint kidding! Looks like Baseus finally has some competition now. But hmm, cough, Satechi really needs to sort out the idle problem. If it were a gasoline engine, I'd think she had a bit of a misfire during idle. LOL Also, 165 watts, thats gotta be enough power to charge up thin and light notebooks and power them at the same time. Your new daily driver, well, I'll be damned, never thought I'd see the day. HAHA
@AllThingsOnePlace

It is very rare to get one to switch to. This is about 0.1 watts more idle than the Baseus I am using (idle increase is pennies per year and it is on a switch anyway), and it is more efficient and cleaner, better voltage specifications. Satechi did something good here, they're charging the premium price for it too.

Thanks for watching! I am using the Satechi 165W right now, and have used it every day since making the video. Never had a device not be charged or restart or anything weird during use, laptop, camaras, phones, and watch all get charged regularly. The 747 is a good charger too though I prefer the style of the Satechi. The only downside I've heard in comments, some of these make a bit of noise though (coil whine), mine is on the floor and I can't hear it at all but if you put it on the desk next to you in a VERY quiet environment you might hear it.

@@itsmnaveedsheikh Eventually opted for the Satechi 165W charger as I'd spent the most time looking into Satechi products above all others to not fall in love with it, plus it tied in with the general aesthetics of my setup. So far, it's been great with no issues whatsoever. I can't say I've heard any coil whine as I mostly work with music playing over headphones or speakers which pretty much drowns out every other sound in the room. However, I doubt if I'd be bothered by coil whine if ever there was such as I assume it would be a low droning sound that one would have to really be listening for to be aware of. It would take a really loud and clearly audible whine to freak me out and so far, that hasn't been the case. On the other hand, I would suppose that Anker chargers are good as well since they tend to get a lot of coverage and endorsement with a lot of youtubers but then again most of these endorsements are due to sponsorships of those channels from Anker and for this reason I tend to be a bit skeptical, preferring to go with the "underdog" products.

@AllThingsOnePlace

I might not always remember but on products that actually do okay I will and also if they are like this one, universal power cord so don’t require an adapter. Time optimization if it’s junk why bother will certainly come into play too. The power factor correction is actually still active at 10% as evidenced by the lower THD number. This is how PFC performs at higher input voltages though. It is less effective.

haha, yes, my story writing needs some work, I tried to create some conflict, it's a power adapter review, then resolve it. I checked and I can get 100W from any port to start. could you make a video explaining and showing the difference of GAN, GAN 2, and GAN 3 chargers and how could I tell if the charger I got is really GAN 3 as described in product listing? thanks for all your videos.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
It is marketing non-sense. There is no such thing as GaN2, 3, 4, 5, squared, etc. GaN is a semiconductor technology that has been around for a long time. It has more recently been able to handle higher voltages (around 650 now) and is less lossy than conventional MOSFET's if used correctly. Often the PFC circuit still uses a conventional MOSFET or a SiC mosfet/diode. The higher GaN numbers are sometimes used to indicate the USB output technology instead which has nothing to do with having a GaN switching chip. There are iterations of GaN like GaNSense which is Navitas branding for 'it builds the current sense into the chip', the GaN part is still essentially the same.
@nidusa1
@nidusa1 Год назад
@@AllThingsOnePlace thank you for this explanation. Please make a video explaning and showing why Gan1-2-3-etc is marketing and no difference in the chargers, it would be a controversial video I think and get a lot of views and debate going. I was reading that GaN 2 is 20% more efficient (& less loss of power to heat). if this is not true, if you could show it in a video it would help a lot that a cheaper older GaN charger is the same efficiency as newer "GaN II" labeled one and not worth buying. thanks
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
@@nidusa1 If you have any references (preferably text) send them over. It isn't that there haven't been improvements in the technology. One example is I have an IEEE article explaining it isn't the GaN it's the stuff around the GaN that is making that difference (it was a sponsored piece though so not peer reviewed or anything). If anything my videos have shown that lower GaN numbered chargers are more efficient, ha. A lot of manufacturers keep making the adapters smaller and sacrificing in other areas hurting the performance, even if the GaN chip is better they ruin by cheapening up elsewhere in the product.

Do you know what will happen if you connect this to a device that requires more than 100 watts, for example a powerful gaming laptop? Will it charge it at 100 watts, or will it attempt to charge it at watts beyond its capabilities until it stops charging within a short time for safety reasons? Also, I have read that this has some issues with compatability with devices like certain anker powerbanks and certain laptops. Do you think the Ugreen nexode 200w will be compatible with more devices than the satechi?

I have MBP 16 M1, iPhone 15 Pro Max and a power bank. I want to charge all of them with one charger and cable. Do you recommend this product for my setup? Does Satechi 145W charger fit my need?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace 6 месяцев назад
This should work fine to charge those devices. The 165 will top out at 100w to the MBP, the iphone will take 27 watts or watt-ever it can, then the 3rd and 4th ports will be lower wattage deliver so the power bank will charge a bit slower but depending on what that power bank is it may be plenty still. The port order matters on this charger. So port 1 has to be the laptop. I use mine with laptop, phone, watch, camera battery charger.

It seems that Satechi 165W does not renegotiate the charging power when it is not required. In my case, when I connect devices that require less than 45W, the charger does not appear to renegotiate at all.
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
That is good to here. I use all four ports and I was having an issue with the USB C to USB C laptop. It consistently dropped the laptop all together, I blame the laptop. I replaced it with a USB C to barrel and it's been fine since then. Two of the connected devices are 5V only and I follow the hierarchy of power.

It does not disconnect the power at all, and in macOS system info it just changes from 100W to 45W. I then tried with Ugreen 4-port 100W and Sharge 4-port 100W to confirm, they both reset when I plug in a new cable. This is interesting.

There is a drop down box when you click on the product, you will notice two original tests, the 160 is the 230V test which took the default spot, and the 120V other test gets put in on the side. This is a known issue, working on a solution to multiple datasets on the same device.

I don't think it will do that on both ports. It will probably be 45w and 25w with the Baseus. I don't understand the charge times measured for those devices. 1 hour with a 45 watt charger is 45 Wh, it's an 18 Wh battery. So, it'd be close with inefficiencies but a 25 watt charger should be able to do that job in one hour. Something doesn't add up. Anyway, I wouldn't count on the Baseus doing 2 x 45w in PPS mode.

I have a question. I am looking for a charger that can supply minimum 135w though one USB-C port, but as 20V 6.75A, not 28V. This is so I can use it for my Lenovo Legion Slim 7i, which only accepts 20v charge though the USB-C port, but will accept up to 135w, but as most chargers are limited to 20V 5A I will only get 100w change on the Lenovo with those chargers. Is there such an USB-C charger? (I am not looking for a charger that has a fixed usb cable, basically a standard Laptop charger, Dell makes one.)
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
Yeah, you basically have to go with an OEM charger. The issue is the USB C port is really not designed to handle more than 5 amps. I mean the pins are tiny so every extra amp you put in you lose watts anyway. Manufacturers have had two years to catch up but obviously they aren't interested and still continue to push non-standard charging protocols, except apple of all companies for laptops at least... You would have to make an adapter to pull 140W from an EPR PD 3.1 compatible charger and drop the voltage down to be compatible. You would lose PD compatibility so the end would need to be terminated as a barrel plug or the rectangle thing not USB C (which would be unreasonably dangerous since it would always be 20V).

Will this charge my dell inspiron 5402?
@AllThingsOnePlace
@AllThingsOnePlace Год назад
Charge, probably, Dell is real weird so you may need an adapter to make this work. The power adapter is only 100 watts on one port and some power hungry machines need that extra wattage to go so will actually discharge the battery to maintain performance if there isn’t enough at the power socket. A barrel adapter may also cause overload if it expects 180w power adapter on the barrel plug but there’s only 100 behind the curtain. See everything is compatible with usb c…. Nope. If the laptop is rated for 65w nominal then this will handle that no problem. Me, I end up having to use a barrel adapter on mine since the usb c says this isn’t a Dell power brick and won’t use it.

mmm, yeah, I don't have any lenovo devices to test with. I have HP and Dell laptops to test with. Also, make sure you use port 1 and 2 first. The other thing, is the high current demand of non-standard USB-C, like on Dell and HP laptops also. If the laptop asks for 100W+ the Satechi will shut off charging. I have had this happen, I actually use the USB c to barrel adapter if I am not going through a hub, no problems with that.
