@@AllThingsOnePlace interesting, I’ve only seen the 140W from Wotobeus. I’m guessing that it’s just a matter of time before we see more 200W chargers. Out of curiosity, based on all your testing, which brands (considering all variations you’ve tested only) has the most reliable chargers? I’ve heard you mention Anker a few times amongst others.

@@zenicoz I have a ways to go before getting good reliability stats on power adapters. One challenge is manufacturers often use different OEM's so an adapter from Apple may come from different manufacturers and have a different Mean Time Before Failure, MTBF. I doubt manufacturers are doing full MTBF failure analysis on a lot of adapters that are being released today. It can take years to get this data. The ones that run hot aren't going to do so great if you do accelerated aging at a higher temperature. The ones that run cooler or have higher efficiency, which do tend to be Adapters from Anker or Baseus, I'd expect to last longer. Baseus has quality control issues so, its more of an if it works out of the box it'll be fine situation.

@@AllThingsOnePlace I’ve never considered that dimension into the comparison of adapters, although it makes a lot of sense. Then that would make your comparisons way more interesting since the brand won’t matter as much as the OEM since the design doesn’t always come from the brand (like Apple does) and for example it would mean that the OEM used by Baseus isn’t as reliable as the one from Anker. Correct me if I’m wrong. This feels like an entire story full of rabbit roles 😂

The OTAO looks like they're using the same OEM as Wotobeus, I know that form factor power adapter overheats like crazy. Over 90C on the case. I do have a 240 and a 245w with EPR to check out, I expect cases are going to get hot. The UGREEN 200W is big, as is the Satechi 200W but it gives them enough surface area to dissipate that heat effectively. There are a lot of big adapters to check out. Thanks for the suggestions!

By the time you get your chargers purchased and setup, new and possibly more efficient ones are on the way to Amazon's warehouse lol... I was trying to find an all in one charger that can replace most if not all of the chargers I am using on my PC/Desk with at least one port that can output 140W. There are many 200W/140W chargers that don't offer 140W charging. I suppose they need to leave room for future devices? :D I was considering the UGreen 200W (not the Satechi due to the high idle power draw) but it didn't do 140W and the promotion $159 - $10 just ended last night so it was a non starter. Saw your video regarding the Wotobeus 200W, definitely going to stay far away from a 90c unit... my i7-12700 don't even hit that temp lol. So far the Asometech 260W ticks all the requirements along with a V/I/P display for each individual channel, it doesn't support EPR though which should not matter for now. That's probably why the price is where it is at. With retailmenot's 20% cashback (ending tomorrow) for Aliexpress and the available store coupons, the price is just too good to not check it out. Wireless charging gets hot, that is not good for battery health, the main concern with wireless charging is how inconsistent it is and how inefficient it is. The 'banner' specification is all they show the public, best case this does 80% efficiency, real world 50% (those are just a random numbers not real data), the general principle is why apple shoved giant magnets into everything to get that alignment better. I don't want to be too down on wireless charging though, in a pinch it is very convenient but as a long term charging solution I would stick with the old cable. The device decides how much power to use, so using a 100W charger is fine even on smaller devices as long as the device is designed well. If you shove 100 watts into a phone battery you are certainly doing damage. Laptops generally can handle that pretty easily though.

I think they all do at some point, with enough devices plugged in. Unless you buy a one port charger. The Anker 240W is probably the closest I've come to a device that might be reliable at the higher power levels though.

Yeah, I want to do a video on some power conditioners, I'd probably start with the lower end ones, most are a premade filter box in a box and maybe a few MOV's for transient protection. I need some RF equipment to measure if they actually do anything though.

I can say that from an audiophile perspective that these noise filters have greatly enhanced the sound quality in my system and given me black backgrounds in my music. The Greenwave is a good inexpensive start for eliminating line noise and works best when paired in series with another more extensive filter like the EVO Acquarius. I don’t know if there are any health benefits to using them but they do help improve sound quality.

Yeah, the PPS mode on this adapter if set to 12v would do 5 amps on each port. The PD standard 12v is 3 amps though.

Thank you. I use the Adafruit usb c pd to 12v dc barrel cables, which are supposedly rated for 5 amps which suggests such a thing should be possible, but I’ve never seen anything above 3 amps. I don’t think I could use PPS for this use case, or at least I don’t think these specific cables support that.

I have it and have for a while.... I tried getting the updated version (with 140W on one port) but they sent me the wrong one multiple times. I wanted to have both but I can do the video on one I guess. It is an interesting device because it does deliver fixed power levels to each port. I am highly doubtful of a safety listing though so should be interesting.

Yeah, the travel adapters video has been in the works for a while. For a 'desktop' style like this one, you swap the lead to the country appropriate one.

I do occasionally. Charger lab (another power adapter focused channel) does great teardowns on a lot of these. It is generally a time constraint also. I've been trying to do one video and one short per week but that is a big ask with a job and all. But yes, plan is to open more of these up. In terms of updates and firmware, these often use an ASIC that has limited programmability. It is usually a shared controller that does both feed back control, controls a power supply and negotiates the USB. The chips have limited communication chip to chip which also explains why they have to renegotiate. I have a bunch of development kits to go over at some point too which is easier since they provide the whole parts list and instructions.

Yeah, it is something that happens sometimes. One issue is there is no way to test every power adapter with every device and every cable in a reasonable or cost effective amount of time. If anything, I'm probably the place to go to test devices against power adapters. I still use my 200W Wotobeus to power all of my studio lights. I have never had them turn off once they finishing negotiating (usually 10 or so seconds). It is preferable that it doesn't happen but especially on smaller adapters inevitable. On a 240W charger there should be power budget to charge to laptops and two phones and not renegotiate power at all but it depends how they set things up. I have that adapter so will certainly be investigating when I get around to making the video for that one. In terms of how it treats your battery and device. Electronics are used to switching on and off so they're probably fine but the fault of suddenly no power then suddenly power is a minor concern. Whenever charging starts it will slowly ramp back up per device requirements, the device decides the charging rate. The stop being abrupt isn't a problem, the device has to be protected for that since it has no idea when a user might pull the cable out. It is more of an annoyance than anything that it starts and stops. I'd check a different port arrangement to see if you get better negotiation. Like I found port 1 and 2 were independent. Then ports 3 causes the other ports to renegotiate.

That is very interesting it can be charged with two USB C cables. This adapter probably is the one that can do that. With a port to spare to provide slow charging. It'll probably top out at 165W to the laptop with three things plugged in, since one of the 100W ports will drop to 65W, then you get 35W for the other ports to charge a phone and headphones. Obviously, totally untested but I'd be curious if that works.

@@treskil Yeah, they seem like good choices, but I get spooked a bit by the lack of safety listing. They are both good power supplies in terms of performance.

Potentially, yes. That means the mains leakage is a bit on the high side, enough that you can feel it on the output. It is a test I want to add to the process soon. This adapter doesn't have a way to drain that leakage current except through your body. It may be safe still but may be worth replacing it to get one that hopefully doesn't leak as bad.

Yeah, I have had it here for a while. I wouldn't download the app... I need to get it on the bench though. The difficult part is hooking it up since most of the ports are low power and it only has one 65W port so getting to 200 watts won't be easy.

Yeah, for the price two 100w Baseus adapters will do you better and be a much better value. I am curious if this adapter was just rushed out and they didn't get it quite right in the rush. I know the Anker 100W nano II got updates to support more charging modes after it was released (of course it isn't externally updatable). That'll be the day, my power adapter needs a software update. Anyway, yeah this one isn't bad in the grand scheme but it is bad in comparison with the adapter from the same company. Kind of that same disappointment level as that Anker adapter. It isn't bad compared to a non-safety listed or a lot of lower wattage adapters but it isn't class leading

The 165w is almost perfect but it would be great to have at least one USB A port for 'past-proofing', the 100w Baseus is also almost perfect but not so great with that built in cable that does not lend itself to traveling. Yeah, I think your use case is a prime reason to use this 200W Satechi. The efficiency might be a little lower but it's still going to beat the Apple adapters and you won't be pulling full load from it so from an overnight charge perspective it's not a bad choice. I wouldn't go with a portable battery device, if you think about it, that's adding an unattended battery and a bunch more circuits to the mix so more efficiency losses, more heat generated, and more things to go wrong. So, either going with something like this or using two 100 watt adapters that each have three USB C ports wouldn't be a bad option (that might be cheaper than this one).

This one can do 100 watt 'available' to each also. Port 1 and Port 2. This should be able to do 65W still on those ports with other devices plugged in. The negotiation is probably not the best though.

I am assuming 220 volts. In that case yes, I test it at that in the video. 220,000 volts might be a challenge.

The device decides how much to power to use. In general in the review I wasn't particularly impressed with this one either. But for your custom cable are you sure you are negotiating the PD 3.1 EPR mode? If it isn't hitting 28V, which I'm not sure that laptop supports anyway, it won't go to 140W, actually that mode may break your laptop... The OTAO did seem like a pretty good charger when I looked at that one. There are issues with Dell and HP laptops and Satechi adapters, although I've never had any issues others have.

Yeah so as of now there’s not a ton of great options. Really get an adapter that does 140w well then get another adapter for everything else… not a great solution.

Either is reasonable. The satechi supports 140w charging on one port if you need that.

They are good for a 5% indication of what is happening. Some are better than others. The Power Z one is decent (still only a 1% device) versus the meters I use which are 0.05% or so). But cost scales across performance, $20 gets you 5%, $100 gets you 1%, $500 gets you 0.05%, $1000 gets you 0.01% or better, $10k another digit or two, it keeps going. Of course they all drift and change so calibration is an important part of the process. Having a known value to make sure the reading is as close as possible is important.

@neostephens8980 I really like the FNIRSI-C1 bluetooth with a USB-C connector as the main. Before I used the FNIRSI FNB48 however the main connector is USB-A so you would need to use multiple USB-C cables to test a USB-C device which may introduce extra resistance/variables. It's accurate enough for home use.

I don’t have one. It shouldn’t turn off the ports in a 5v mode but yeah sounds like apple has a learning curve with usb c. Hopefully, they didn’t do what Samsung did with PPS, if it uses that mode then anyone’s guess what will work with it. Also if it goes over 3A while asking for 9V then it’s out of spec and the charger will probably shut the port off. I’m not sure satechi can really do anything here either. Hopefully, they have been testing and will update their devices with compatibility.

The odd thing is it's only on ports 3 and 4. The others are fine. Ports 5 and 6 go up to 2.22A, which is even lower than 3A. Ports 1 and 2 are the same 3A. One would think if it was an overcurrent condition then the rest of the ports would trip in similar fashion but they do not. It's like this charger is an amalgam of three different chargers, each with distinct characteristics. Another wild theory is that the iPhone decides that the charger is actually something to be reverse charged and the charger cuts off the ports. Though in that case the iPhone would not gain 10% or so SOC in the meantime. I don't have a KM003C so I cannot really dig deeper. My TC66C is somewhat primitive in its abilities. It's definitely a mystery and I really don't know who is at fault. My Anker and SlimQ chargers have no issue with my iPhone. Though I know that some chargers are more tolerant of out of spec devices than others. I am in contact with Satechi and they said that they are testing an iPhone 15 Pro with their charger. Will reply with an update if they come back with anything interesting.

Trying to keep it simple, AC adapters leak current from the mains side to the output side. This current can cause a tingling sensation on non-grounded metal bodied devices like laptops. Every power adapter is a little different. It is something I want to add to my normal testing suite but haven't yet. The basic idea is that a 3 pin device has a ground connection and therefore can deal with some of the leakage current through a path that isn't the user. A 2 pin device will leak through you.

Was just curious if the problem gets bigger with higher-powered adapters, or the safety considerations start to warrant groud more, or if it's just that beyond some power the entire brick is large enough anyways that might as well have some extra pin overhead.

Thanks! Yeah, I'm working on it. The newer videos try to have more indicators and text on screen. Yeah, I also significantly reduced the metrics shown in the videos to try to make it a little more general purpose and less confusing.

It's a clone adapter. So, I probably won't do that one for a while. The only real difference is it can do more watts on the second port, otherwise it will perform exactly the same as the other clone 140W adapters.

I was so hoping that the 200 watt adapters were gonna be good, but I feel like the early adoption of this standard, is leaving much to be desired. Maybe they will get better in a year or too, or when the next standard is released, which will probably be 400w adapters, by then the 200w adapters will be good I'd assume lol. Cause if you think about it, it took many years before they made even good 65w adapters. For the longest time, USB standards were only 14W, I still have an Anker 10-port desktop wall charger, which was rated for 60-watts. I mistakenly thought it was 60-watts per port. Sadly, after testing it, each post was only giving me 14 watts! Which means, with a lot of devices plugged in, it will give me even less!

Yeah, I see that in the instructions now. It resets the port and I think my PD trigger got confused because it does resest still. So, I had to unplug and replug that in to get back to the 140W mode after plugging in a 20W device. Kludgy but I got it work. In terms of the crazy multiport adapter things, yeah, usually low power per port. I have some of those, with crazy claims of course, I need to get on the channel eventually. Safety listings are a long shot on most of those, one does have a fan in it though.

The Baseus 100W desktop adapter is prime for that use case. Yes, two devices will be on USB A to lightning or watch cables, and two will be on faster charging USB C to lightning cables, or C to C cables, but the Baseus 100W desktop Gan3 adapter is good at that device mix.

Have you had any issues where your iPhone 15 Pro does not charge or stops charging on ports 3 or 4? Specifically when charging from a nearly dead battery to full?

@@adriftatlas I think someone has a ticket in with Satechi for this power adapter and that scenario. It's apples first USB C in a phone device so it probably is going to have some compatibility issues. Just to throw something out there, maybe try a non- E marked cable? or vice versa of what you are using?

@@AllThingsOnePlace There is something funny about ports 3 to 6. Running an FCP/SCP test using a ChargerLab KM003C results in the tested port being stuck at 5V and the adjacent port in the pair not working anymore. The only way to get it to work again is to pull power. My guess is the iPhone may occasionally do something odd and the charger chip simply crashes. Interestingly enough, ports 1 and 2 have no issues at all. The KM003C is able to scan them and everything still works. My guess is that they crammed a decent two port PD 3.1 charger with two subpar two port PD 3.0 chargers into one case. That would explain the inefficiency and poor power distribution. Likely Satechi was talking about my ticket. They replaced the unit once and today I shipped it back for a refund. It's just not a good product, which is unfortunate as their other stuff is pretty good. I'll probably buy a dedicated PD 3.1 charger for my MBP and a smaller brick for my smaller devices.
