Can you tell me why to feed a piece of the frog to a dog? I don't know anything about farriery, but this shocked me the most 😱
@melanisticmandalorian
@melanisticmandalorian 2 года назад
@@FranCecy001 The frog gets cut off and thrown away, if you watch most farrier videos, dogs will come by and sneak it off as snacks. The frog is the consistency of soft leather. It's main job is to be pressed down when the horse stands on the hoof, and it assists in pumping the horse's blood back to the heart. The extra frog is cut off because it is over grown and having extra layers of unnecessary frog will give space for bacteria to grow and for the horse to catch thrush. I hope it kinda answers all sorts of questions.

I truly wish that some of these farriers would feel like doing a little teaching as they work. I would so love to know what they are attempting to do and why. I can’t imagine trying to differentiate between living and dead tissue. However do they keep from accidentally hurting the horse. This man seems to work more carefully and slowly. Good closeups of making the shoe and putting it on. Im so used to watching cattle trims, this is so different i never knew how this was done!! I have so many questions, whyd you put the shoe on hot? Whats it for? Whats the procedure 😭😭😭 do horses ever get gross infections and how would you handle those ahhh im so curious now! I like this 🤩
@CrownedWithLaurels
@CrownedWithLaurels 2 года назад
I can answer a little! Holding the hot shoe agaisnt the hoof like that helps create a really good fit between the shoe and the hoof (you can see him doing a tiny bit of adjustment when he sees where the mark is). It burns away a very little bit of the hoof and gives you a smooth surface, which is also "sealed" (sort of like a steak!) which helps protect against moisture and bacteria. Hot shoeing is not 100% necessary but it's good practice for the best possible fit. Horses absolutely do get infections and abscesses in their feet and these can range from fairly mild to very serious. Routine hoof care like this video helps prevent them. This experienced farrier will notice if something's not right, but also the horse's owner should be taking care of their hooves every day. Bacteria can get in through punctures or cracks in the hoof. The horse will start to go lame and the hoof will be hot to the touch. Abscesses have to be drained, which is pretty gross depending on how you feel about pus, and then looked after carefully for a few weeks. Horses can also get thrush in their feet, (which is very gross because it STINKS) usually from standing around too much in moist and dirty conditions. Clean dry stable conditions help to prevent this.

I have watched a few of these now and I still wonder: How do you make sure - after roughly clipping the toe edge - that you don't file the hoof at an angle (e.g. left side filed shorter than the right side of the hoof), which would lead to wrong joint position afterwards? Is it automatically even, when the horse rests its leg on the stand?
