I really appreciate the skill and knowledge of hoof anatomy required to be a good farrier the real question is how does your back manage to hold up it would kill me to bend like that

It doesn’t! My uncle recently retired from farrier work in his 40’s as he’s now having regular steroid injections into his back for that reason. There’s ways to mitigate the effects, but it still can’t ever be denied that it is hard on your body

Gary from Texas, here, grew up around horses and cattle, it still amazes me to watch a farrier work his/her trade. I also remember the smell when they would burn-fit a shoe onto the hoof... a cool video! Thank you!

I am so glad to see that you wrapped up the feather while you were working on the horse. As the owner of an Irish Cob, I had a very hard time getting my farrier to understand that he needed to wrap the feather in order to do a proper trim job on my boy.

@augustonthefly
@augustonthefly 2 года назад
Compared to the guy I watched who trims the cow's hooves you have an extremely low-tech approach. He has an $80,000 machine that holds the cows and grabs the foot and brings it up oh, you just put it between your legs. I am surprised the horse doesn't kick the chit out of you though
@madisonwilson9715
@madisonwilson9715 2 года назад
@@augustonthefly it’s a completely different process from cow hoof trimming.. they get horseshoes
@xonx3056
@xonx3056 2 года назад
@@augustonthefly cows are generally not as used to handling as horses and there are generally more cows to take care of instead of a few horses. Cows hooves can be trimmed without any machines, I have done it, but those cows love humans and I trusted that they would not kick me or try to get away from me while I was working on them.

I have two questions for you guys. 1. What does the frog feel like. You can tell it's a different material than the rest of the hoof but you can't extrapolate what its texture is like or, how squishy it really or how flexible the trimmings are. Question 2. Why don't you use a hoof stand?
@LilLoo226
@LilLoo226 Год назад
1. The frog feels like cartilage, only thicker. You can bend a slice of it. It has a smooth texture when cut. It's not squishy, but it has an interesting smell (not stinky). 2. Farriers often don't use stands until they get to the front and top of the hoof (rasping the front for proper axis) --- after they've trimmed the underneath (frog, sole [on this horse, the sole is the white colored, flakey stuff he's trimming with the nippers and knife] and wall of the hoof). He did use a stand when he got to that part of the trim later in the video. P.S. Dogs love to hang around when horses get trimmed...they love to chew on the hoof and frog trimmings. Snack time!

Can the horses hooves get a fissure straight down the middle of its grooves if not given some extra space to grow? I would think with the thousands of lbs of pressure weighing down against it, and it’s growth would cause it to crack if not given some extra space, or it being so flush is how it’s supposed to be? Just a question, love the video. 🙏🏻 🐴 ❤️

After watching the hoof gp who does cows feet, I am amazed by the sticking to tradition by farriers when they could be doing an easier job using some of the power tools used on cows.
@lenerasmussen6838
@lenerasmussen6838 2 года назад
They put the cows in a crush that lifts up the entire animal and ties the legs firmly so the cow cant move. This way he stands behind it upright being able to use both hands with the grinder. I dont know any horses that would agree to such treatment, they tend to be claustrophobic. Usually, a horse will need more frequent trims than they do cows, meaning there is less growth to remove, so a grinder would remove to much hoof too fast.
