Roddam Narasimha - the DST Year-of-Science Professor at the Engineering Mechanics Unit, Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore - was one of Satish Dhawan's earliest and most distinguished students. In this interview, he shares his memories of his teacher and mentor: how Dhawan influenced him in choosing a research career in fluid dynamics and how Dhawan's personal qualities enabled him to transform IISc - of which he was the longest-serving director - and ISRO.
This interview was produced by the Archives and Publications Cell, IISc, on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Department of Aerospace Engineering.

I did my M.E, in Mechanical Engineering (1966-1968) when Prof. Dhawan was the director. During my second year, I was the captain of the Institute's cricket team. There was always a "friendly" staff vs. students game every year. Prof. Dhawan was the captain of the staff team. I had a very nice talk with him as we walked to do the toss. I was afraid of course but he put me at ease. Several years later I ran into him at Bombay Airport. He recognized me and we had a nice chat. I will always remember Prof. Dhawan as a kind person ..

Why did you leave India and went to U.S.A? Why didn't you contributed nothing from India? Beacuse of Brain drain and lack of guidance for young people, this country is going down the drain. You should come out and contribute something to India instead of living in U.S.A.

Had the privilege of attending Prof Narasimha lecture on Turbulence. He gave me a job as a Research Associate at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences in January 1983. Great man. Humility personified.

One scientist interview views is 28k but one upsc tooper view in millions even he doesn't contribute to the society as IAS ya IPS officer till then. that is the reason india is poor country because everyone is so obsess with power not intellectual value.

I did my BE (Electrical Technology & Electronics) 1979-82; Prof Dhawan was the Chariman of IISc - he invited our entire class of 82 to his bunglow for a high tea. Mrs Dhawan and him addressed to each one of us and made us comfortable - the warmth and friendliness is something which we carried, is highlighted in Prof Narasimha's discourse. Great Men like him made IISc stand tall as ever
