Fascinating stuff! Those of us who grew up in the seventies are used to seeing the globe before programmes only, rather than linking into trails - but we know from the clip that's done the rounds of the first Monday in colour that the habit continued for a while.

Wow I'm just a massive fan of archive television and you don't know what this means to me to see this little clip. Missing TV from the 60s. I believe it episode of the Morecambe and Wise show with Bruce Forsyth is a missing episode wow would love to see the whole programme if you have it. It would make my year.

I remember these tapes passing through my hands at the BBC Archives when we were still in Brentford. They were Sony format, I seem to remember them as being 405 line. Definitely off air as you can see by the multipath reception.

Music fans may be interested to see this interlude, between Happening For Lulu and Morecambe And Wise - as it was crashed into a few weeks previously by Jimi Hendrix when, as a guest on the Lulu show, he decided to play on through the scheduled end of the programme.

The previous year, towards the end of Rediffusion (?) 's tenure as the contractor, Hendrix had appeared in 'It Must Be Dusty', with Dusty Springfield and, by all accounts, given it the works - complete with a duet spot and a rendition of then-brand-new song 'Voodoo Chile' . Footage is on lots of people's wish list but there is audio - and they bang it out. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-cSFipavMgoM.html

Spool forward to 4th January 1969, and perhaps Jimi's a bit less willing to play by the rules of Light Entertainment - though Lulu's soon-to-be-husband Maurice Gibb was, reputedly, a friend to pretty much everyone on the 'serious' music scene as he was, by all accounts, A Very Nice Guy Indeed who would invite all of the rockers of the day, over to his place for 'a smoke' - wafting the tell-tale aroma of wacky-backy out of the room, before his new wife returned home . Lulu was, it seems, rather straight-edged but there are reports of her being quite laid-back, amused even, about Jimi's rebellious approach to the script and being quite happy to see him make up his own ending to the show. Meanwhile, some accounts of this event have the B.B.C.'s Stanley Dorfman losing his temper as Hendrix disobeyed his instructions but other versions of the story have him buying Hendrix a pint after transmission and thinking it was all tremendous fun. Both may well be true. Either way, I reckon it was a great performance - which was nearly lost to The Big Magnet.

The plot thickens - I took a look at Genome and there were only two episodes of Happening For Lulu - the first was at the end of 1968 and Hendrix appeared on the second and last one. The following week, the show had been renamed to A Song For Europe, i.e. the search for the UK's song for the Eurovision Song Contest, which Lulu was to sing there. On Lulu's Wikipedia page, it is suggested that she had little say in the matter ; she recollects that Bill Cotton informed her, through her manager, that 'I'd like her to do the Eurovision Song Contest, on the series' (sic). At the time, the BBC held the exclusive right to represent the UK in the contest, which arguably explains why an artiste, presumably under contract, could be 'assigned' to the task, seemingly without having made themself available for it. Cotton was not head of BBC light entertainment at that moment - in that role was Tom Sloan, who is remembered for his connection to the comedy of the era - but also to the Eurovision. He had just received an OBE in the New Year Honours. Tom Sloan sadly passed away, in role and at a relatively young age, in May 1970 . Bill Cotton was then entrusted with the job.

@trevordance5181

I thought one of the reasons Morecambe and Wise left ATV was because they wanted to make shows in colour which at the beginning of 1969 would mean having them shown on BBC2 only.
@mbvideoselection
@mbvideoselection Месяц назад
@@trevordance5181 Notice the vertical sync jump between the BBC1 globe and the start of M&W? That is most likely due to the 405-line BBC1 switching to a 625-line (converted) source in order to show the programme. I think that episode had more than likely already been shown in colour on BBC2 but got a B&W BBC1 repeat. My belief is that during 1969, BBC1's network control got upgraded to 625-lines, and was originating everything in 625 including the Black & White globe shown here, and then all was converted back to 405-lines for 405 transmitters, but sent 'pure' to the 625 transmitters. There was a short time in mid-1969 when the 625-line service was already transmitting before the official colour switch-on, with Black & White presentation and idents but some programmes in colour.
