I come back and watch these old videos every few years. Because of a combination of me getting older and the landscape of youtube changing, no one makes videos that do it for me like the best friends did.

I liked MK Deception way more than I should have just because of the hype Fatalities... though with Mediocre gameplay. This game shat all over Fatalities with that awful Create-a-Fatality system with the same mediocre gameplay. But as a 12 year old, I was fascinated by the amount of characters, and the Konquest Mode. I had way more not bad times as I should have.
My favorite is deception the war looks awesome but something about raiden standing his own then the stand off between Shang tsung and quan chi I don't know man
10:00 Pat was crazy trying to say that Guilty Gear kept fighting games alive in the mainstream. GG only sold about 140k copies while MK: Armageddon sold over 1 million. MK: Armageddon carried the genre on it's back when it was released.

I'm just gonna say it, the Chaos realm is dumb, but its also the realm that is the most fun and my favorite of all time. THE FACT THAT IT MAKES NO SENSE BEING A CLERIC OF CHAOS IN THE REALM OF CHAOS MAKES HIM CHAOTIC WITHIN THE REALM! Even chaos has order, and order eventually has chaos. I mean I think he's doing it ironically.
They call it the realm of chaos, but that doesn't mean that is has to be the absolute apex of maximum conceivable chaos. It could just be some place that a guy from Outworld visited once and thought it was pretty crazy.

Mortal Kombat character design in a nutshell: We have a character named Meat. His gimmick is that he has no skin. He uses two cleavers. He's a thing, I guess.
One is a rejected character from Street Fighter, the other Woolie stole from his brother (and prooobably a ripoff of an existing character in Marvel). Finally Zubaz and Rage go toe to toe with one another to find out who's the true warrior. The only way it should end, fighting at MK: Armageddon during Saturday Morning Scrublords. It has to be this way.
Every few months, I always find myself coming back to this video. To me, this is the peak of what Superbestfriends was to me. A bunch of friends talking about stupid stuff that doesn't matter and play a terrible game. The entire discussion about the cleric of chaos still makes me laugh to this day. Thanks for all the laughs and always making it feel like I was actually hanging with the boys

Ah, that's awesome! I remember dumping way too many hours into SC3's. I've never played SCV; no money as a kid and all that. But in a drunken stupor I bought another PS2 and SC3 last night off Ebay , so..maybe I'll just pick up V for my 360.
I have a lot of nostalgia for this era of Mortal Kombat. As a legitimate fighting game it's completely broken, but as a 'beat the shit out of your brother' game, it's pretty damn good. And I enjoyed the story-mode, for what it was. Even enjoyed the far inferior Konquest mode of Deception, before Jade Empire came out.
To Pat's point on Realms of Chaos: This is why elder scrolls has their various realms of oblivion all sorted right. Their closest thing to a "Realm of Chaos" is a realm of Madness which is more stable in the fact that Madness does have a measure of stability to it. But the rules can change daily, the landscape can shift(In theory) from day to day, and they only thing truly certain is that your reality is forever at the whims of Sheogorath.
I guess in the fighting game community it is, most people in that community know about it. But in the general mainstream Matt is totally right these games were the only thing that sold anything at the time
Thank GOD Netherrealm Studios rebooted Mortal Kombat as I couldn't bare this being the end of MK saga... Everything coming down to a fucking Gary Sue and some bullshit prophecy that doesn't even go right...
The worst part about this game to me was that ALL of the endings of Deception pointed towards the next big thing being "The One Being" or whatever, like the god of all gods showing up to start wrecking shit. Instead it was a lame story about Blaze being a surprise ultimate life form and everyone wanted to go to the top of the pyramid.

I don't even give a fuck I love MK:A, it will always have a special place in my heart despite all its many flaws. Matt was right too, there was a time were MK was holding it down for fight games, Ed Boon deserves respect. Also the reason Matt likes this game more than the rest is because he did all the fun shit, that character creator (should be Kombatant Kreator) is mad fun, especially picking all the moves for your fighter, I want that to come back.
This was actually the first Mortal Kombat game I have ever played. I know it's shit now but I still think Zombie Liu Kang is the most hypest shit ever.
Look, I don't know why everyone wants to get all nostalgic but Deadly Alliance and Deception were some of the best Mortal Kombat games ever. I'm tired of people suddenly wanting to pretend that the 3D games ruined the MK legacy somehow.
+codafett You are just bad at the 2D, I'm also bad at playing the newer ones, but I admit that 9 and X are better in every single way, from story, combat speed, animations, designs, sound, controls, it is played competitively because of that, something that the 3D ones weren't because of how unbalanced and slow the games were.

Really the best things out of the ps2 mortal kombat era are those extra minigames: Chess kombat and motor kombat. I spent so many hours having fun with those
I never even played this game and yet i adore the concept of and design of Frost. It was actually nice to see her in MKX, even is she did get her appearance cut short by Sub-Zero.
The best thing about MK Armageddon is that awesome opening. One thing I still don't get is the fact that Quan Chi could defeat Kenshi in a sword fight. Also Matt, MK Armageddon came out in 2006, it's even newer than Tekken 5, not 4. Tekken 5 aka one of the most sold fighting games of all time (4 Million units) I think we now who kept fighting games in the mid 2000s alive, and it was not MK.

I just kinda hate that people think that Smash Bros. are a "hardcore" fighting game, which is never was meant to be, it's just a party game. You can have fun with competitive scene and all but sometimes I think the tourney tweaks take this shit too seriously from time to time.

Sure I will have your moves in the game, but I will not have that beautiful chocolate skin, booty, and actual personally unlike bitchy Kitana and insane Mileena. My god. New possible favourite? New favourite! The Armageddon intro, Woolie ignoring Sareena's inclusion story, Liam being strangely awesome at the game, Super Best Friends Drift crossover and DUEL OF THE FATES. Truly this is the end game. I actually liked Armageddon though. :(

This is what was probably what was going through the minds of the MK devs when making Hsu Hao. "Well guys we don't have a Kano wannabe yet and we don't have a chinese soldier dude, I got it... lets combine the 2 ideas and make a half-assed character that no one is gonna like!"
That’s what you get for a game that tried to capture the whole MK universe at one title. The graphics of the MK 3D era ironically were downgraded every title forwards. If you appreciate closely, you can see Deadly Alliance is hands down the one with better graphics. Scenarios, artworks, lighting, visual details and character models were precious, especially for a 2001 game. I think Deception downgraded graphics in order to had things Deadly Alliance couldn’t had (like interactive stages, weapons stage, more than one level for stages, stage fatalities and two fatalities for each character). Armageddon tried to put so so much that it lacks in a lot of stuff, like soundtrack, graphics, fatalities, you know, almost everything was cut. Game couldn’t be less charismatic and generic.
I actually like the idea behind Shujinko, but not the execution he is basically supposed to be a guy who traveled all the realms and learned moves and fighting stiles from everyone, but his name and execution overall are just so lame.
