Too bad they didn't play the PC version of Toshiden 2. It has an amazing bug/feature where the framerate is unlocked, and the gamespeed is directly tied to the framerate. So if you play it on any modern computer, it runs at 600+ FPS and fights last about five seconds.

Some things should be said about the Toshinden series: 1) The music is great 2) David, Tracy and Vermilion are neat designs 3) The Game Boy Toshinden is actually pretty good. It's Fisticuffs material for sure, if only for a compilation episode on handheld-only fighters 4) the shitty mechanics, slow speed, poor animations, jank, bad voice acting, Engrish, and the typical Japanese goofiness like Chaos in 2 or Bayhou and Naru in 3, makes for a fun but frustrating evening 5) the music is great
Oh man, first thing I saw was "Battle Arena Toshinden" and I went "Oh yes! I remember loving that game". Then I saw it was Scrublords and went "Oh no! This means it was balls!" lol I still have good memories playing it with my friend on his Saturn.
I remember I played Ellis once and defeated a enemy. Ellis was close to the edge of the ring while she made her winning pose. She fell out of the ring and the enemy got a win for that. THIS GAME IS A DISASTER.

I used to own Toshinden 4 and all I remember is that there was a big dude with big ass arm cannons. I think he had a super where a giant gun came down and attached to his upper body.

Yes it is actually, its one of the very first if not the first fighter to truly move in "3D". It also helped showcased Playstations CD quality audio with some great music. Lots of unnecessary hate for this series imo.
+xCr00k3Dx Yep. Tekken and Samurai Shodown got OVAs around the same time, too. Honestly, the best of that shitstorm was the Fatal Fury trilogy, because at least they were silly-bad, not just... bad. Oh, and the SF2 anime, but that one was legitimately good.
***** I knew about Fatal Fury OVAs (though I've never watched them), didn't know about Tekken (which got an okay live action adaptation), and SamSho. If you're talking about the SF2 animated movie I'll agree that it was actually really good, though I remember the cartoon series not being not that good as well. Anyways, I watched the Toshinden anime last night (yay youtube) - it was hilariously bad in almost every single capacity, except for the English VO, which was just straight bad (the uploader had one subbed, and the other dubbed). It was REALLY obvious that no one on the production team gave two craps about it at all.

Toshinden 2 is far and away my favorite bad fighter. I probably put as many hours into it as I put into 3rd Strike, just because my options were so limited as a kid.

AussieDragoon Chainsaws are awesome. Leatherface is awesome. But compared to every other character in Mortal Kombat, Leatherface is super lame. But chainsaws are still awesome.

+munnypantz It seems flashy and fun at first but it falls COMPLETELY apart once you get into it. The game has like 4 pre-programmed combos and a super and the transformation and that's it. So you just spam a single button all day. It's utterly mindless and the CPU is a turtling bastard. You can, however, make a combo in the combo maker that is unblockable and spam that instead. Oh and the game has NO fucking modes. There's story and VS and that's it and Story uses pre-set characters (not sure if you get to use anyone other than the boring main guy) so no real "I just wanna play a cool character against the CPU" mode.
Flashing back to 12 year old self and friend playing Toshinden 2 as Chaos and not thinking it was a pile of smeg because holy shit we were easy to impress back then. Shit looks like "Battle Arena MS Paint" Jeeeezzzzzz
The sad thing is that the Gameboy version by Takara is actually pretty good, one of the better portable fighting games to me at least. It's a much more traditional 2d fighter, though how it has a sort of three strikes policy for ring outs helps make it interesting.
It hurts to hear you stepping on my nostalgia goggles. I love Toshinden 1 and 2 to death. Characters and music are groovy, game mechanics in the sequel were really interesting.
The first three games were a steady improvement. They didn't touch on Toshinden 4 here, but it's better that they didn't because that game is even more underwater than the first.
no joke....me and my childhood friend would always play toshiden 2 whenever I went over to his house...he gave me the ps1 disc and I proudly(?) still have it,but it finally cracked after years of toshiden greatness.... R.I.P toshiden 2 disc....
OH YEAH!!! I used to own the very first Toshinden game. That intro crawl! It's all coming back. I remember the PlayStation version being slightly faster than this Saturn version, though. I hope You guys continue with Killing Zone or Cardinal Syn.
+Nurse Valentine Got one when I was a little shit, had Virtua Fighter, Virtua Cop, Scud, Panzer Dragoon, Resident Evil, and some racing game (came with the steering wheel controller and everything) - it was aight, I played the hell out of Virtua Fighter, Panzer Dragoon and Virtua Cop.
As bad as the series is, I can at least enjoy the first game as like a guilty pleasure type of thing where like it's bad, but it has the excuse of being an early 3d fighter with some nostalgia behind it and some of the ultimates (YES, Toshinden 1 had ultimate moves, believe it or not!) were alright. But like the further the series went and stayed shitty, the less of an excuse it had to be bad, if that makes any sense, even though they're actually improved games to an extent. Just thought I'd throw out my thoughts on the series.

Say what you what you want about Toshinden. The music is still fucking god like plus it was really fun back in the back. I think it was the first 3D game I played.

Personally I preferred 2 over 3. And I really liked the first game. And, no, this isn't some 20 year nostalgia coming up, I first played it 7 years ago and liked it.
Yea, the hate boners these guys get for Toshinden is really over the top imo. These games are clunky messes but they have a ton of charm and enjoyable aspects to them.
I remember this game being shown all over when the ps1 came out in the USA. It was insane and then Tekken came out and it was forgotten. Ellis has a really good theme song in the first game. Still listen to it and it is 2020
It's so weird but I remember that when this first game out alongside Tekken, everyone I knew said BAT was the future of 3D fighters and Tekken would never last. Things change.
It took them a while to discover the one thing I remember from playing Toshinden around the PS1's launch: the sidestep moves are devastatingly overpowered. In the first game I always played Duke and mashed his Cyclone move, because it was practically the only one in the game that had horizontal priority, and I was invincible.

I actually like Kotobuki's 2D art character designs from Toshinden 1 and 2, too bad they didn't transition well into the game models themselves. I think that Naru was Kayin's daughter or something......and you guys forgot the "Puzzle Fighter" and "Card Battle" Toshinden games.
