I have worked on a bunch of those cylinders for my brother. He has a landscaping business. Always bending the rods on backhoes or snow plows. Very nice to have met you! All; the best! Mike

Thanks, Adam. Great video as usual. So great to meet you at the NYC CNC Open House. My friend Sam and I were like a couple little kids running around talking to people and shaking hands. Sam kept going back to the swap tables, picking through the goodies. Thanks, John

Thanks Adam, watching how to replace the seals on a hydralic cylinder was a good education. I probably won't need to do it but it's nice to know if I had to I could change the seals myself.

Hi Adam, just a little info on rebuilding hydraulic cylinders. I have done Cat, Komatsu and Yanmar cylinder rebuilds and inside the gland, aka the cylinder head, there is another replaceable wear item. If you look on a manufacturers parts diagram and parts list you will see a bushing inside the gland, it's a part I always replace when doing a repack. If the bushing is worn the piston rod travel off center and will wear out the new seals fast. You have to put some cuts on the old bushing and fold it in on itself to remove it, then you have to press the new bushing in. I make a little install tool so not to crush the new bushing when pressing it into the gland. I don't know if your cylinder has the bushing, but if there is one, its pretty important to replace it.

I've manufactured hydraulic cylinders for over 12 years and internal glands are a pain in the ass! They can bind up really easy when screwing them in and when they do you can't back them out. lol!

I bought about 25 end mills on ebay. They were shipped in one of those small flat rate boxes. No extra tape on the ends. It arrived torn and empty. The mailman held it up and said "Was there supposed to be something in here?" He's a genius. Now I always wrap plenty of tape all the way around both ends.

Adam, just had to rebuild a steering cylinder from a Ford 555B backhoe. The rod was pitted and the end cap didn't want to come off. Ended taking it to a one man shop in Oxnard CA. The gentleman went to trade school in 60s and hasn't been out of work ever since. He turned a new chrome rod and piston. Installed new seals. The ends are like tie rod ends and the rubber caps were missing. He said they were solid so I installed zerk fittings and made some seals out of old shock bushings drilled out with a hole saw. These parts were no longer available through the local dealer, works better than ever. Randy

@TERRYRONALDRACKLEY
@TERRYRONALDRACKLEY 8 лет назад
The jd one I rebuilt you had to keep the gland and piston close together when you put it in the cylinder cause you had to push it in cylinder a ways to put on snap ring.So far it works.
@timramich
@timramich 4 года назад
They're a mess to deal with. You gotta yank out the whole rod and piston to get that end out, instead of just being able to unscrew it and it working itself out. Makes a mess if there is fluid left in the cylinder.

Adam I've been enjoying your videos for a few weeks now. just wondering if you worry about getting the nut on the end of the rod tight enough. I've heard it's important to get them tight enough so they don't come loose.

Are there any hydraulic cylinders designed specifically for horizontal use? Not like the small ones in the video but large multi-stage cylinders. Like how does a large cylinder that operates on it side not wear away the seals and wipers from all that weight of the cylinder pushing down on them?

Hey man, love what you do and thanks a ton for putting in time and energy for our entertainment and education. I'm thinking about getting into machining and lathe work myself, I'm just slightly worried man. What if in 20 years CNC rigs are dirt cheap and any john do that has some computer skills can slap one down in a shed and turn out quality pieces? Can you talk a bit maybe on how you think a human machinist can compete with the robots?
@Abom79
@Abom79 8 лет назад
+Peter Timowreef Hard to predict the future but I know CNC is they way it's going. However, there will always be a need for repair shops and job shops. Not everything about making new parts or mass production.
