Thank you for posting these videos. I kept my Dads 99 after he passed, and like to use your videos to help work on the car. Sidenote: These Saturns are great little cars. I was all over the country in his, and it never let me down. Thanks again.
Rich mate I've managed to work on my Saturn all thanks to your vids!!! Just wanted to express the appreciation we all have for your informative tutorials!
For those who have just thermostat without that small tool (like I bought, aftermarket): there are some tool sold separately, but hard to say if it is the right size, not sure if it is universal size. But it is possible to use a neck of the bottle for ACT Anticavity, it is plastic (rather heavy) and won't hurt the thermostat. Thank you for a great film.
What your taking about is drilling holes in the oil ring grooves of the pistons to cut down on oil consumption. All i can say is it is an interesting idea.
I've done it on 2 rebuilds. The first one I drove for 100K miles and it seems like it brought it from 1 qt of oil in 1000 miles to 1/2 qt in 1000 miles. This 2nd rebuild, I've only driven a few hundred miles yet, and I added an oil catch can as well, so hopefully even better.
Hi Rich, I fixed..starter, front, back brakes...new radiator..water pump...ty so much for all your video's 😊 Saturn sl1 has been a great car. Had it since October 2010 To Present Dec 2019. Problem runs great but will not pass smog, burns oil. Has 223,552 miles on it. Because of the mileage I am not sure if I should put more money into this car..hard to let go. Lol do you have any suggestions? 😊👌💖😨😢
I changed my Thermostat, but it is still running a little over half way, and it is fairly cool today. I can't figure out what else could be the problem, I guess the water pump should be next, but It doesn't seem to be giving me any other clues. Also, I am going through about a quart of oil a week, it doesn't smoke anymore since I changed the valve cover gasket, but oil is going somewhere, it doesn't seem to be dripping under the car either. Any suggestions on trouble shooting these two problems? Great video by the way. Thanks.
soylentgreen Hey, I know this is a little late but, my 99 SC2 was running a bit hot as well, and I noticed my cooling fan wasn't coming on. It does in fact come on with the A/C, that's what I'm trying to figure out right now. I'm trying to find out why it doesn't come on when it needs to. Also, if the fan doesn't work, your A/C won't work either. {I replaced mine. $50 from Amazon}
I have a quick question, and I know it's not really thermostat related - but, yesterday 03/27/2018 I had an OBDII connector hooked up to my 1998 SW2 (just shy of 192,500 miles) and with the car warm and idling in neutral I was getting a reading of approximately 21% load on the engine. 21% under these conditions seems high, is this a normal reading?
I just got done, doing that to on my Saturn SL2 1993 car. it was so easy. And lol i just saw this video after i've already done it :D But yeah u make excellent videos Please Keep Up the Good Work, Cause i like 2 look at your videos, at just be able 2 understand without reading :D Again thank you. Christopher
So, 7 months ago I put a 180 degree thermostat in, and per Eric Ver Linden it should be a 188 degree unit. Haynes book says thermostat should open at 190, but that book covers 1991 - 2002 so that's a little too broad to be reliable. Assuming they're right and AutoZone was wrong, what harm am I doing leaving it in?
I bought one from O'reillys for $13, it came with a thermostat inside the housing and an o-ring. I had to shop around for a bit but O'reillys is the only place I found with the whole set. Plus it's the same price without the housing & ring at other stores!
I bought the complete unit in the housing at AutoZone for $16. It was a 180 degree unit; the clerk said that was the spec. I couldn't find a 195 degree unit for sale.
The thermostat I bought came inside of its own housing and a new gasket. So do I have to just unbolt the old one, put on the new gasket, and then bolt on the new one?
rich pin Thanks, Rich, but I think the way I asked the question wasn't clear. What I meant to ask was, is the overflow tank the right place to put the fluid back in the system? I don't think there is a radiator cap on the radiator, but I'll look harder if I have to.
I couldn't reply to your message for some reason. You're welcome for the subscription. Great videos. I've put a few to first hand use with my 98 Saturn SL1 5spd. Thanks!
It is a bit harder getting to the thermostat with the engine in the car...you want to have a new hose clamp in hand to replace the one on the filler hose from the reservoir, because you may need it. If you are using hand tools, the hose needs to come off or it'll be right in the way of your wrench handle.
Changed a water pump in the parking lot at autozone. I forgot to change the thermostat. 100 miles from home I blew a head gasket. I said f it and scraped it.
Nahh wont work, its in a scrapyard lol he he :-) Some designs are really nice, that one dead easy, but some manufacturers like to see you remove parts to get down to it. Good demonstration :-))
Hi rich like all your videos. I am not to good with communication on RU-vid but struggling with a 2002 Saturn sl1 low shaky ide. I'm not sure where to go if you reply. New map, cleaned very very throttle body, cleaned iac and a few other things. Tired of buying cleaning parts.
Rich try using less zoomed in angles at first. Show a broader area and THEN get close to what you're working on. When you start the video out right there and so close to what you're working on, it is very disorienting and annoying.
Today, Autozone has the thermostat for $12.99 and it comes assembled. all you have to do it add the o ring, and bolt it up.. www.autozone.com/cooling-heating-and-climate-control/thermostat/duralast-thermostat/615455_110923_1646_93207?checkfit=true
