I seriously think sauron cause we all know that most middle earth battles on paper are almost never what happens in practice. Like sauron and gothmog have more feats than Ancalagon, but ancalagon beats them because he was practically the last bit of morgoths power put into a living thing. I think sauron would win but my explanation would be long so I won’t say much on the matter. Nice edit btw
Sauron probably wins. Gothmog was almost beat by fingon and was killed by ecthelion (granted he got a little lucky). So sauron wins with Mid-High difficulty imo.
Mairon also known as Sauron is said to be the most powerful Maiar ever created by Eru Iluvatar. Gothmog being a fallen Maiar himself is below Sauron. Sauron is the right hand man of Morgoth. This would be a tough battle but Sauron beats him in the end.
I think the Balrogs poured forth all their spirit in their image and spiritual form, although they are former Maiar, I don't think they can reform their bodies after destruction. Therefore Sauron has much more endurance
For anyone who thinks Sauron would win: *First* Sauron and Gothmog were equal, that's a fact. *Second* Yes it is only in rank BUT Sauron's role was manipulation and politics, while Gothmog's role was FIGHTING and MILITARY. I shouldn't even have to say more. *Third* Lastly, Gothmog was an amazing General, and a terrifying warrior. He's the Lord of the Balrogs for a reason, and I'm tired of seeing people say he's not the strongest of his kind when there is literally facts and evidence that prove it. I'm not saying it'd be easy, with the ring I'd honestly give it a Tie. Without it no chance though, give the big guy some credit c'mon. Edit: Also both died to "David vs Goliath" unlucky BS, one to an elf, the other to a man, so neither deaths count.
Nah sauron would win but not by much Sauron unlike morgoth is actually a very skilled fighter Gothmog would rank in between sauron and gandalf the white (and tbh i think gandalf could give gothmog a better fight then gothmog could give to sauron)
Interesting battle, gothmog I think would win since this is pre ring Sauron and at this point Sauron was more of a smart general while gothmog was the king of the balrogs and extremely powerful in hand to hand combat
Like, maybe, cause when miar fight it usually ends with some magic from one or the other taking the cake, but naturally, I think sauron has better weapons (he was a craftsman, morgoths second in command, and deceives) those weapons being his mind and cunning. Now in a 1v1 situation I have to say sauron. Sauron is a significantly powerful valar. Gandalf not even close to using his full power was able to kill a regular balrog(and Gandalf in that same body and even a more powerful body points out that he is still significantly weaker than sauron) . A powerful elf could kill several(depending on what version you read), but no one but a select few miar and all the valar could even come close to even defeating sauron. We also do not even have enough feats on either side to actually compare battle capabilities very well so I will give you benefit of the doubt but I think Sauron’s magics are too strong for gothmog. There is a very legitimate reason he is second in command, and it isn’t solely because he was the smartest. Edit:Sauron could take many forms and he would do so according to what he needed to be so I have no doubt he could turn into something that was physically stronger than a balrog even if it’s a larger version of himself.
Yes Sauron is overall more powerful thrn Gothmog but not in physical strength. It’s a tough fight as they are both high rankings next to Morgoth. I see your point tho👍

I agree but carcorth is worth a army of of balrogs according to some people and I know for fact that an army balrogs could beat sauron but not sure about gothmog and anaclagon are tied in my opinion
I go with Gothmog on a spontaneous fight but Sauron was a shapeshifter and very versatile. If you give him time to prepare he would win because he can adapt to his oppenent. That's why Sauron was the second commander because he was able to adapt to every situation while Gothmog was always a general in the same form.

@@JackAttack1776 Gothmog is more physically powerfull while sauron was better at deceiving others and diplomacy. Gothmog's kill list is more impressive , while sauron died to Gil galad and elendil, gothmog killed the likes of feanor , fingon and turgon which are alot stronger than Gil galad .
You are right in that this would possibly be pretty even at the start. But given that Mairon/Sauron is stronger than Osse (who single handedly raised the island of Numenor) at his peak, Sauron would inevitably win. Heck, Sauron withstood Eru Illuvitar sinking the island of Numenor after Sauron used the One Ring to control all possible 18 million people, including the Nine Kings of Men.
Sauron is a diplomat, a politician and one of the best blacksmith with a lot of knowledge not a fighter, when sauron had to fight, it's only because he was forced to. Sauron almost never fight on a battle during the first age, he was like the caretaker of angband. In a fight Gothmog crush Sauron without question.

Gothmog does win in a 1 v 1 but odds are Sauron would use him as a tool. Sauron was powerful not only becasue of his combative abilities, but influence, cunning, Intelligence and Deception

Huan is more powerfull than Gothmog+Luthien was helping him+it is confirmed in 2 different places that Sauron was at his weakest when he confronted Elendil and Gil Galad, not having been fully recovered+ Gothmog is a lesser maia, Sauron is one of the greater of them
You forgot that Sauron uses sorcery. If Sauron can plan, its him. If its a surprise attack, Gothmog. Though Sauron being a shapeshifter might just flee. Gothmog is stronger but Sauron is more powerful. Goth got the Strength, Sauron got the power.
I think people dont look at the bigger picture and think this but sauron is nothing without the ring and i think gothmog would obliterate him but heres the thing i think gothmog has more combat skills than sauron could ever have and if he just cuts off sauron's ring its game over so gothmog solos sauron and think about it sauron got slammed by a mortal man a mortal man not a maiar a mortal man😂

I don’t agree, Sauron demolishes and the Balrog can’t do anything except swing an ax and Sauron controls the elements, distorts reality, telepathy, teleportation, telekinesis, necromancy, flight
Gothmog would win hands down, Sauron is strong in the forms of magic, leadership, cunning and shape shifting, but he is not an extraordinary warrior or some sort. Gothmog for a reason was chosen to lead the armies of Morgoth as high captain.
@creativenamesmth yes so strong that he fought only 2 times and he was beaten by a man and a dog, and never led morgoths armies once or participated in an actual battle in wars of the jewels lol. Gothmog meanwhile led the armies as high captain and participated in all the wars, plus slew 2 high kings of Noldor. @@Jac.onot in fact, in the silmarillion it is said that feanor is the most powerful in mind, capacity, knowledge and strength than all the elves even more than inwe being that he was originally the most powerful since it was said in the first version that inwe would be the first born, I don't like Feanor but Tolkien himself affirms that Feanor is the most powerful, Fingolfin is the best fighting and the one with the best heart since Feanor was tempted by Morgoth and Fingolfin is no more Fingolfin is one of my favorite characters and I The chapter where Morgoth kills him hurt, but hey I'm just giving you facts that I read about the Silmarillion
i think too gothmoc wins , balrogs are the stongest creatures in melkors armee , he was only the first commandand cause how was there name , sauron was a idk forget there names but they stayed under the gods, gothmoc was a maya/umaya and they stayed 1 stap under this dudes who stay under the gods. from god level sauron from power i think 100% balrog/gothmoc.
There isn’t a debate here in terms of pure power Sauron destroys Gothmog. He’s literally the man Antagonist in the LOTR trilogy building an army with hundreds of thousands of orcs trying to destroy middle earth not to mention he was a giant in physical form over 9 feet tall powers of extreme strength and deception shapeshifting ability to read minds and effectively have mind control such as to why he created one of the largest armies if not the biggest in the fictional world
And he refers sauron when he serves morgoth (sauron in the first age has the ring and he is more powerfull, more what morgoth) obviusly in his prime melkor destroys all characters except illuvatar
@@danyelpeter1376 she was the greatest of the spirits fire. Dwarfing Gothmog who was close to Sauron in power and authority, if still beneath him. If Morgoth would have gotten her she would have been his greatest servant and the greatest of all balrogs. Also no counting how many other fire spirits would have followed her into darkness. At that there likely would have been legitimate armies of balrogs.
