I want to buy the magnetic rail bits but are they compatible with standard benchdog dogs? I know alloys vary in how magnetic they are. Keen to know if they work and are as strong or if I will need to buy the SauterShop magnetic dogs to get the full benefit? Keen for the blue clips too, I assume those work with benchdog standard dogs? Thanks

As always, I enjoyed the video. I bought the Sauter table router mounting system which is extremely well made with very smooth height adjustment. I installed it in Festool Kapex table but may well change that to be compatible with the 90cms height of the MFT. Recommend Sauter to anyone although I live in Belgium and the postage is free!

Thanks for posting this very interesting video. After being a woodworker for 60 years, I'm completely rethinking how I work and the equipment needed for those changes. I have 2 shops, a large 40' X 70' which is unheated and contains my large equipment cabinet saw, planer, jointer, etc. I also have a smaller shop 14' X 32' in my basement which has HVAC, dust collection system and air cleaner. In the basement shop I have a Avid CNC Router, 12" compound miter saw, Kreg ACS, standard router table and lots of hand tools. As I've gotten older, I don't like walking the 120' from my home to the large shop in hot or cold weather. I prefer staying in the basement shop where it is a constant 70 degrees. I just sold the Kreg ACS and cabinet saw and will be using that money to start buying Festool track saw and related equipment. Since I have a CNC Router, I plan on building my own MFT. The Sauter table has given me lots of ideas to use in my planning process and some equipment to buy from Sauter. I've found your videos extremely helpful in my planning process on what to buy!

I have gone mft table nuts in my spare time, Just drilled holes in my first one. I could probably figure out the common stair angles and roof angles and drill adjustable elongated holes becasue I am a cheap skate. I haven't seen anyone bring one to a job site yet here in California. You could probably use a dedicated shim block on the bench dogs to achieve different angles. A simple wedge with half circles to index the wedge on the dog. One long wedge at the right angle could achieve all the angles maybe.

Literally had their copy festool /makita 3 mtr track delivered this morning wasn't quite sure I'd done the right thing out thre box but an afternoon of breaking down mfc sheet I'm happy . Only minus is that you can't add parallel guides but at two hundred quid cheaper than the festool equivalent I'll get over that and make a wooden one as I've always done. Interesting products from this company

@@10MinuteWorkshop As an alternative to your amazing budget MFT top video. 👍 I saw somewhere on YT, or Etsy maybe a 3d printed template for MFT with free plans. small bit of plastic, with 4 small round holes at 96mm ( or whatever the standard gap is ) with a straight edge reference. reference from your square edge of sheet good, make the first few holes and then use them as a reference for remainder. It would have cost me about £10 to have it 3d printed, plus whatever the cost of a decent sheet of MDF. That's taking it to super budget levels. just thought I'd mention as you cover so many MFT related topics. :) thanks Peter.

32mm centres, apologies if someone else has already answered this further below. The drilling heads on cnc routers have the drills set on 32mm centres with multiple arbours in the drilling head. So multiple holes can be drilled in one plunge saving time. Each drill spindle is independently controlled so drills of differing sizes can be fitted to the drilling head for different tasks but they will always be on multiples of 32mm centres, don't know why 32mm though.

Thanks! As mentioned in the vid, it was to do with the maximum size of the helical screws that drove the line boring machines in the post-war boom. There’s a link in the description to an old post on FOG that explains it succinctly. 👍👍

That looks the business. But can I just flag up that you need to be careful if lacquering or sealing. I applied sanding sealer to my first table thinking I was being clever and protecting it from moisture , but sealer that dripped through the holes actually prevented the dogs from going in 🤦‍♂️ so I had to sand them all, not something I like doing on such a precise bit of kit

I asked sautershop and they do deliver to the US, it’s not possible over the website at the moment but if you contact them they can sort it out.. shipping for the table is costly because of the size but the magnets and stuff is no problem.

I do not have a MFT and probably never will but the thought of cutting into such an expensive item ON PURPOSE blows me away. Can't really wrap my mind around it.

The tops tend to be treated as a consumable, but as I say, I usually route a sacrificial strip into the cut-line to extend the life. Or you can use 'benchtop protectors' from Benchdogs, to raise the workpiece by a few mm so you avoid the cutline. 👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop The routing for the sacrificial strip is also what I am referring to. I suspect you could use "cookies" but don't know. If I had a need for a MFT I would bite the bullet and get one. I would not be able to go potty on that day though due to constriction of the orifice!

another workaround is to put a cheap lets say 2 or 3mm thick sheet of 60 cm wide HDF or comparable material on top of the bench top (below your workpiece) to protect it while cutting. Shouldn't cost more than a hand full of €. The standard 90° cut will lead to a thin groove which won't change (same as for the Festool MFT) and for other angles you could then use this extra layer. No big deal.

Cheers Christian. I usually just make them a snug friction fit and that does the job just fine. If it gets moved around a lot then over time they can loosen up, but a strip of double-sided will fix that. 👍👍

Perhaps one reason a 96mm pattern was chosen over a 100mm pattern is because of the number of whole numbers that divide evenly into each numerator? The numbers 2, 4, 5, 10, 20, 25 and 50 divide evenly into 100, while the numbers 2, 3, 4, 6, 12, 16, 24, 32 and 48 divide evenly into 96. This is just a guess on my part. Very interesting product, thank you.

Hi Peter from Cairns Australia. I have been watching a lot of your videos for while and being a long time MFT/3 owner I have been totally frustrated with the fence and rail support, I have tried Rail dogs, but too restrictive and have been looking for a long but not found anything until I watched this video, so I ordered a set of Long Dogs, Magnets and Blue Rail Hooks. They arrived today and the quality is superb and works well except for one thing. You use a TS75 and I have a TS55 and they do not clear the long dogs or 18mm sheets, I have now ordered a pair of short dogs. I think you need to do a follow up just to tell people to buy the short if only going for 1 pair. Regards Mark

Great video yet again Peter.. small question though ... at the 15 s econd video mark there are some Blue fast release clamps at your left shoulder which look similar to the Festool / Bessey quick release version. Where can we get them ? Can I presume they fit the MFT top ?

Hi David and thanks! Those blue clamps are the original Axminster trade ratchet clamps; they were about half the price of the Festool clamps at the time, but had a few rough edges. Axminster smoothed off the rough edges with the second (red) versions, but hiked the price! Still cheaper than the Festool, ones though, and yes, the fit the MFT and the rails. 👍👍

Hi Andy. No, closest I came was looking at the Aldi tracksaw (Scheppach clone) and I'm afraid the tracks are problematc due to the odd sizing. Hi Peter, I’ve noticed that you recommend routing out a channel for a sacrificial strip on the cut line. I’ve just built my own table with a 3rd party MFT top and if I use my Festool track against two dogs to get my 90 degree cut, the cut line falls straight across a column of holes. Which would make it difficult to put in a sacrificial strip. Is this ok? Do you just write off this column of holes when they get damaged by the saw?

If that happens, I’d route the sacrificial strip across that column, but leave it wide enough that you can still put a dg in the holes if you remove the strip. Dogs in that Colima will sit lower, but sometimes it’s handy to have a low-profile dog. This is what I’ve done in my portable bench btw, works well. 👍👍

Thanks Peter. I've been watching your videos for a while now and I've decided to invest into the Festool system. Right now I have the OF 1400, TS75, sander, and at the point where I spend the money and get the Kapex and build a MFT table, or buy the Festool MFT 3 and a cheaper mitre saw. Any advise? I do a lot of furniture and use sheet goods.

Hey Ryan. Tricky one tbh; Kapex has been great for me, but it’s big selling point was the dust collection, and how light it was to take out for installs. And I think I’ve only ever taken out once or twice. It’s a great saw, but if you’re workshop-based there are other options. As for the MFT, I love my old MFT 1080, but after making a couple of portable benches of my own I’m going to be making my own workshop-based MFT-alike before too long. Not sure if that helps or not! 😬🤷‍♂️👍

You were slo cose. Hiya Peter. Good review. Your point about mitre saws really has me thinking. If this was incorporated into a worktop assembly table build on a single level, i.e. mft on either side of the Sauter board, why have the bulk & dust of a mitre saw? Hmm, I need to think about this. It would be good if they did the laser etching on both sides. Remember, if you're going to put a lacquer on it, you will have to clean out the holes again, especially if they're as snug as you say they are.

Cheers Gary. I certainly use my mitre saw for different cuts than I do the MFT, but the idea of being able to do a compound mitre in sheets goods has some appeal. 👍👍

I wouldn't worry too much about the laser markings; they are cut deep enough that they can't wear out easily plus you would need to completely destroy several numbers in a row in order to get confused. If there is dust in the markings simply use a shop vac or compressed air to make them nicely readable again. Laser markings on both sides would mean another pass through the laser AND a sander to clean up the surroundings of the marking which otherwise look a bit burnt. Doesn't really make it cheaper ;-)

I'm envious of the woodworking tool situation in your area, Peter. It seems like entry level tools (like your bandsaw, jointer and array of tracksaws) are abundant. That just doesn't seem to be the case here in Eastern Canada. Ouch! Thanks for letting me know the situation in Canada. Honestly I don’t know how the guys who knock them out for £30-40 do it for the money, when you think of the initial investment, but they do, and we get to benefit from it. Same with the cheap tools, when they become commodity items; they’re not all good, of course, so you need to shop carefully! Best wishes from London. 👍

Hi Peter, Just made an mft top with the parf guide system and am curious to know whether you fix the sacrificial strips in place with glue, double-sided tape or some other way? Or will the workpiece hold the strips in place when cutting? Thanks in advance for your reply!

im very interested in seeing how them dogs last over time as its normally cheap stainless steel that is magnetic and it normally rusts to, so very interested in seeing how they hold up over time. As im sure i said on another ive just got myself a TS55 (as it was on offer and no where had the Mafell in stock i could find) so as soon as i get chance to finished my workshop off ill be looking at making a MFT style top or buying into one. Id be grateful if you could let us know how the dogs hold up Peter

I unfortunately only have a small unheated basement workshop which seems to be quite humid - at least most of my files and rasps are rusty. However the MagDogs aren't and I have quite a few of them in my workshop since 5 years (and I am not even maintaining them like using oil to clean them).

Yes, I missed out on one when they were around last year so was quick off the mark this time. Honestly I’m in two minds about wether to bother with a review, given that you can’t buy them, and probably won’t be able to until net year. Cuts nicely - there’s a short vid up on my Instagram - but I’m getting a lot of vibration. I’m holding onto the box for now... 🤷‍♂️👍

@@10MinuteWorkshop I got one too and am having similar issues with vibration. I think bolting it down to a workbench might help a little, but it seems like the wheels might not be balanced properly. Mine also arrived with a bent frame which Aldi gave me a partial refund for and was easily solved with a spreader clamp (no replacement option since it was sold out). I'd be interested to hear your thoughts still, and I'm sure those same thoughts would apply to the Scheppach HBS261 for people would rather spend the extra money than wait for them to come back around.

I have a chop saw as well but I would find it way to cumbersome and heavy to frequently lift it to another table or a MFT. Like in many workshops it has its fixed place and it is not even clamped to somewhere - the beast is so heavy that it doesn't move.

Nice. How does one secure mafell/bosch tracks to bench dogs, can it be done? I was going to build mft table but at 160yoyos this may be a better option, just wondering about bosch tracks as everything seems to be based around festool.

indeed no t-slot in those Bosch/Mafell tracks - so magnets are not an option. But nowadays most plunge saws can be operated on Festool guide rails.

@@Werkzeug-Feinschmecker yes I know mafell plunge saw can be operated on festool, makita and other tracks, but I already have 1600 and 800 from mafell and 1600 + 800 with 32mm hole spacing from bosch with fsn ofa 32 kit and I love that set up so I definitely dont wish to invest in another set of tracks Nice link thank you

@@10MinuteWorkshop Yes starting a short series next week on the Sauter router table system, based on the very innovative pivoting router lift, the router fence, a bunch of 'gadgets' and a pretty huge 1800W spindle router. Part 1 will introduce the range, part 2 will build the router table, part 3 will put it through its paces by building a 'pop head' storage unit for my son's ever-growing collection of well 'pop heads' but I will build the entire thing with a single router bit and use the flexibility of the system for the various joinery aspects - no challenge there then.... Should be an interesting project, whilst I wait for the CNC to arrive that you convinced me to buy. Great video by the way :-)

Oké I know you said you will mostly use it to cut straight lines and you will make a cutout for that. Do you have a solution for using al the angles? Without cutting in the board itself?

just put a thin sheet (2-3mm) of whatever wooden material like hardboard or this simple plywood below your workpiece for the non 90° cuts and you are done. At the end if the plunge saw is set to just cut through the workpiece we are talking about some scratches of maybe 1mm depth in the bench top. This doesn't impair the function of the system.

There's a product called benchtop protectors from benchdogs - these are low (3mm) dogs with a grippy silicone button on the top, and are made specificallt to raise the workpiece off the bench by a few mm to help avoid surface damage. 👍.

Sloppy Dogs Hi Peter I have brought a new Festool MFT Table and brought bench dog from Bench dogs uk . There seem very loose in the holes , so when i was in my local tool supplies ( MSS tools ) there had one in the show room (Festool MFT) , i didnt have any dogs with me but they had some in store(not from bench dogs) . I put them in the table in the show room , they seem a lot tighter fit , so brought some . thinking that the ones i had form Brendogs uk where slightly smaller . i tried the new ones in mine table but same problem very loose . Both table where new Festool MFT table but seemed different in size holes . I call Festool but there never got back to me . Any thoughts Peter , Ps Great youtube Channel Jon Cotton

Hi John, and thanks! Honestly, no, I'm not sure what's going on between the two Festool tops. I know Festool tend to use 20.2mm as the 'standard' sized hole, but most other companies making MFT-style tops make the holes at 20mm and the dogs are generally 19.95mm, so a nice tight fit. I know some folks use a couple of coats of clear lacquer on the dogs to help with the fit - a bit of a hack, but it might be worth a try to get the stuff you've bought working for you? Let me know how you get on, oK? P👍👍

I wonder how did furniture makers 50 or 100 or 200 years were able to create anything? Today we need a multitude of specialized machines, still handworking tools for every possible occation, a multi-function table which allows to make cuts with 32,537° angles and so on... Mmh, I personally find the ever increasing number of gear-video's and advertisements not really interesting. I especially like your videos Peter when you showed that one can do much with some clever ideas and does not need to buy every latest gadget on the market! :-)

Honestly Nick, they did great work with what they had - and you can still do great work with similar tools today - but let’s not kid ourselves, any woodworker from any particular century would give their eye teeth for the tools we have at our disposal today. But as I said in the video, I’m not at all sure how often I’ll need to make repeat cuts at 78.4° 🤷‍♂️ As for the ‘ever increasing gear videos and advertisements’ perhaps you’re not aware, but changes to UK consumer law recently require that any product provided for review - even if it was unsolicited, even if you refer to it in a negative way - must be tagged as an ad. and anyone not doing this is in breach of the law. I’m glad you like the videos about clever ideas without excessive gadgetry - I hope you enjoyed the pocket-money rail square, and the parallel guide/repeat stop I made for it - but the reality is that it’s one of my worst performing videos. Everyone says they love this stuff, but in reality very few actually watch it. 👍👍

I just meant that today it's easy to get lost in gear-talk and obsessing over it and thinking one would need "everything". But a good set of some quality tools is great to have indeed. Regarding the pocket-money rail square -- I actually spent 120 Euros on a rail square, because I don't have a table saw and do all my cutting with the track-saw. And in this case I felt the money was well spend, because it's quick and I don't have ever to think about if my cuts are square. They just are. :-) But I have "stolen" your idea of the cutting station (you used for trimmings) and modfied that idea to not need an MFT style table. I have 19 mm holes and accessories, which is great. But I get the squareness from the rail-square. Both on sheet materials, but also in the cutting station. I want to update the station and maybe then upload a video, because that might give some ideas for other Bosch rail users (where some of the typical rail cutting stations / tables do not work).
