Figuring out the bullet tumbling issue and sending a few into gel blocks for fun.

Congratulations on winning this. My daughter took her first buck with a 6.5 Creedmoor Axis 1. They are great rifles for the money. I believe that was an 8:1 but we didn't set her up with any long bullets because she was going to hunt in less than 200 yd distances. About the rifle a little definitely get the job done. Had a great price. In your case free!

If I was going to spend that kind of money building my son a rifle and considering the only thing your keeping is the action you might just as well start with a decent action with a quality magazine. Great video seen part one and had to find part two. Looking forward to see what savage does for you and what you get back.

I sent it back to Savage on April 12 and haven't heard anything yet. We'll see how it does upon return as too what type of upgrade it gets. Probably just going to get a better scope and a stock with shorter length of pull but who knows...

@@thelonggunner762 get the young man one of those limbsaver air tech recoil pads. It didn’t look like he impressed by the thump on his shoulder two much. Good luck and can’t wait to see the young man on the trigger again after savage makes it right for him. Better make some room on the walls for his mounts this fall.

It is amazing those bullets tracked through the gel so straight and mushroomed so perfectly hitting the block sideways. Compare that to something like m193 properly stabilized.
@thelonggunner762
@thelonggunner762 Год назад
The 2 bullets that I didn't catch exited at about the 14" mark, I would assume they stayed more sideways going through the block. The other 2 two probably hit and spun nose forward being the less resistant direction of the projectile causing the expansion . I've seen quite a few bullets that were stable in air end up expanding and then flipping backwards in a gel block.

Interesting how well the bullets mushroomed even tumbling! Barnes TSX is impressive! Nothing would survive long with a wound channel like that tumbling bullet created!

I have some theries on what happened but nothing I can prove. We don't know the angles at which the bullet entered the block but while tumbling through it if the nose happened to be forward it should open up. Looking at both projectiles that were recovered you can see that one side is opened up slightly more than the other. I can't say anything for sure without more testing with a larger sample size of stabilized and unstabilized projectiles.

Yeah something was definitely off with that thing. I just set the same 243 up and am super impressed by the accuracy. Hopefully you got it fixed. I’d have asked for a new one. I got the 243 with a chrome lined barrel and bolt. For the price it’s a nice shooter

1:12 twist? Sounds like a dedicated varmint rifle to me. Specialize in 58- 75 grain plastic tip bullets. Of course I'm back east and only hunt ground hogs. Im actually a little jealous.

Non that i know of 9-1/8 , 9-.25 or 1-10 are the standard factory twist rates

Why are the bullets tumbling after 40 yards?
@thelonggunner762
@thelonggunner762 11 месяцев назад
The gun I received only had a 1 in 12 twist barrel on it which is good for stabilizing 58gr projectiles. It is supposed to have a 1 in 9.25 twist so we can stabilize 100gr projectiles.
@winstonskafte5505

Well copper bullets like more twist similiar to 103 and up lead core . 243s are made factory with 1-12 all the way to 1-8 twist rate you need to pick your bullets accordingly . Not nessesarily the barrels fault .
@thelonggunner762
@thelonggunner762 5 месяцев назад
From the factory this style number was supposed to have a 1:9.25 twist barrel and instead it had a 1:12. We sent it back and they installed the correct barrel and now it shoots the Barnes well

Mushrooming and keyholing.... interesting
@thelonggunner762
@thelonggunner762 Год назад
What I should have done is have a piece of paper in front of the gel block that way we would have known the angle the bullet went into the block. It might have gone in straight or sideways, we can't really tell but the mushroom of the bullets were both angled to one side a bit so I would bet it wasn't completely straight going in.

Have savage replace the barrel then look at after market barrels. They will not do anything once you take their POS off.

Savage sucks a fat one. I've got a 110 in 6.5cm I bought new in mid 2019. Ran a bore scope down it first thing, the grooves looked like rumble strips on the highway, they never used a finishing reamer on the chamber, and the crown looked like knapped flint. Sent it back, got it back 6 months later, they recrowned it(half assed) and said there was nothing wrong with it, as opposed to rebarreling or replacing it. Ruger is so woke that every rifle comes with a case of bud light and a Target gift card. I tried to buy a screw from them for a mount for a sight. They wanted 2 forms of govt ID, or birth certificate, SSN and proof of citizenship, along with the make, model and SN of the gun(s) the screw was going to be used on. I still have the emails to prove it. I got an old 8-32 scope screw and after 10 seconds with a dremel, it was a perfect fit. Most other companies are dropping logs in bed now too, arms companies, ammo companies, accessory companies, and more. If you want quality and safety in your arms and ammo, you're just better off doing it all yourself. As for this rifle, you can fight with savage if you want, but I'd either sell it or rebuild it with a new barrel.

Over the last couple of years I've seen a lot of quality control issues with different major manufacturers with trying to keep up with demand. Savage did take care of us on this gun and rebarreled it. It shoots much better now and my 5 year old is happy with his prize.

@@thelonggunner762 oh wow, that's surprising. Yeah, with my experiences, it was in The Before Times. Glad it wasn't a massive pain. I also imagine that building rifles with dad would be fun! If I'm ever lucky enough to have a son, that's definitely something I'd do with him. Anyway keep up the good work
