Today Halfmilesniper breaks out the Savage Axis in .243 just to give it some range time. We'll put some Remington Core Lokt and some handloads through the rifle, let's see how it does.

I've always thought that the .243 was great introductory cartridge for young hunters. And it is powerful enough for most medium game animals. It's also powerful enough to give young shooters respect for recoil (not too hard, but not a .22LR). Still, nice video. Appreciate you taking the time to give it to us.

Where I grew up in Texas most everyone started out with a .243. That fact is probably why I over relaxed on that very first shot, I was barely holding onto the rifle, ooops...got but, lol. It is a great caliber for longer range hunting too.

Hi. I used to be involved with hunter training courses. Savage kindly donated the axis rifles we used on these courses. Does yours have the weaver scope on it that savage fitted at one time as part of the package? Poor scopes, i saw two fail.
@Halfmilesniper

Yes Nick, it was the package deal with the Weaver 3x9 variable scope. I'll keep an eye out for possible scope failure, I hadn't heard there was an issue.

It is interesting how some guns like ammo A and not ammo B while others like ammo B better. Now here we have 2 Savage rifles that don't really like the Core Loks and a little while ago I sent some Remington solid copper .270 to WhoTeeWho...his rifle didn't like them at all, but my rifle shooting the lot number held for a dang good group.

Best count I have off the top of my head is something like 22 different cartridges...rifle and handgun. I have both of the Gov's 20 cups, there have only been two runs but will get my 3rd one for 2021 at this year's banquet. Last year I finished #2 - soooo close, LOL. I have a box of Gov's 20 plaques from California and Michigan but the cups are far more useful. I appreciate you watching, thanks.

Great video Halfmile. If you're anything like me, once you're uncomfortable and trying to shoot, you're going to be off. Those are great rifles though, and a great caliber to start young hunters off with.
@Halfmilesniper
@Halfmilesniper 2 года назад
My discomfort was definitely evident on the video, I just couldn't get wrapped into the rifle the way I wanted. I will probably give this rifle another try, again with the Core Lokt as well as the 100 gr handloads. I might even put together some with the 85 gr Nosler bullet. We'll see if I can get comfortable and shoot a little more consistently. Thanks for watching.

I just sighted a Savage 243 in recently and went out to 300yrds with it. All ammo makes ran about same as far as groups. All I tried was 100 grain. Was wondering how the Axis would do. I prefer Ruger American if were to buy, or T/C venture, but if price is right, I'd snag a axis. Howa/vanguards are cool too. Just wish I would of snagged one before prices got all jacked. They all grouped pretty good, but Hornady Whitetail and Winchester Power points did best.
@Halfmilesniper
@Halfmilesniper 2 года назад
Price was the whole reason I snagged this rifle for my daughter. I paid just over $300 out the door for the rifle new in the box, which was an outstanding price. The rifle does shoot well, although I surely did not do it justice on this video, LOL. I appreciate you watching, thanks.

@@Halfmilesniper Got some lefty youth in my family. I got a 44 mag H&R but its got some issues. I had sent it in to H&R after I got it, and they supposedly fixed, but then they cancelled H&R production and all. I thought I had function tested it, back then, but went to range to only get one round off, and light strikes. I'm in the process of figuring out what smith to send it to. I've contacted two. 76HighBoy forum response was to get a wolff extra power spring. I don't want to fiddle with the guts, so I will have a smith do this one. I think if do get a lefty axis, might go with a 350 Legend. That way its good on state land with our regulations. How far do you think 350 legend is capable for deer? 150 to 200yard max?
@Halfmilesniper
@Halfmilesniper 2 года назад
@@Hill_Billy_Without_A_Hill I can understand not wanting to get into the guts of the rifle, I agree the Wolff extra power springs are probably a good idea. I believe the 350 Legend should be good on a deer sized animal out to 200 yards. Based off my experimenting with heavy bullets I would suggest zeroing at 150 yards, or if a 150 yard range isn't available, maybe 2 to 3 inches high at 100 yards.

Had several of those rifles that I have built up for friends and a couple of my own. Take the stock and replace it with a Boyd's Prairie Hunter stock the get a MCARBO spring kit for about $20 and install it reducing the trigger to a little under 2lbs. Reload some 80gr Barnes TTSX and you have a ragged hole at 100. Or you can buy a high end rifle for what you'll have in the savage but then it wouldn't be any fun lol

Getting is Axis out of the synthetic and into some nice wood would definitely change the way it shoots. As I bought this for my daughter I'll let her decide what she wants for the long term.

Those rifles shoot great for the price. I love the 243 caliber and got my biggest deer with a tikka 243. @@Halfmilesniper Kind Sir What are your thoughts on Henry long ranger in 243? That is the one I have, But yet to fire it. Have not yet even zeroed the scope.
@Halfmilesniper
@Halfmilesniper Год назад
@Sindee Charlton it seems like a very interesting design. I did have to read up on then after you mentioned it the other day. Now I see how they've successfully chambered pointy bullets for the level gun...a magazine. GreT, removes worry about unintentional primer strikes in the tube. The short throw of the lever looks like it'll be smooth and fast and the rack & Pinon action on the bolt engaging locking lugs ensures a good lock up for modern shouldered cartridges. The fact there is no mag tube means the barrel can be free floated which is great for long range accuracy. I think it'll be a good rifle.

What's worse than getting scope bite from a 243? Getting it from a 257 Roberts while wearing glasses. Not only leaves a cut above the eye but the glasses cut the bridge of the nose also. So I've been told. 😆

@@Halfmilesniper My little pop left a small scar above the bridge of the nose for over 45 yrs. Lol You learn that when shooting a friend's rifle that is setup for his eye relief don't scoot to close to accommodate for yours. Also after your vision & senses come back those little cuts are a pain to stop bleeding before the days of crazy glue. Handkerchiefs don't help much. Wish more companies still carried the 257 Roberts. Great little cartridge. Of course the 6.5s are similar but named & designed a little differently.

Front bag way too forward and too high. Smaller front bag under the rifle at proper place would tighten up yours groups a lot. You had it at the end of stock on front and you know where there the barrel is pillar.😮

Stop breaking your cheek weld on the stock when you are chambering a round. Move the bolt backwards but leave your cheek stuck in the same spot on the stock, also stop moving the rifle around ont he table so much. that screws up everything you are doing.
