My son's Axis comes back from the factory with a new barrel that has the correct twist rate in it this time. I test out a few different factory ammunition through it and give you my overall impression of the rifle.

First off, I don’t own a Savage. But, I’ve watched all 3 videos and I have to say. Finally, someone that openly admits he’s working with the cheapest gun on the market but yet doesn’t call it junk. He’s doing it for his kid. And for that reason alone, you’ve got my 100% respect. That’s his gun. He won it. And he will remember this for the rest of his life. Your one helluva Dad.

I have over 3,000 rounds out of my Savage Axis 223 (no accutrigger) it shoots extremely well - it still has the same scope/rings I put on it when I purchased it - did no stock swap/bedding or anything. It's not an ugly rifle when I go coyote hunting I look at it and it looks good - well balanced and I do not mind if I have it resting on the ground or next to a tree.

For those looking into getting the Axis II….look into the APEX. You get the 3 position safety , the one piece rail, adjustable LOP stock , accutrigger and a Vortex Crossfire II scope. It may save you from having to upgrade the Axis piece by piece.

I filled my Axis II's stock's forends with expansion cement known as ROCKITE. Drilled bridging holes in the webbing to tie the chambers together (future jobs may use heated pins or cut up old drill bits pushed through to act as rebar) and filled to 1/16" below webbing height. Solid as a rock. Also bedded barrel chamber area (wrap elec tape 1" behind forend tip to align bbl within stock channel. But for ~$200 you could just do the BOYD route.) Have had good results using shaft collars as barrel tuners (YT'er gave me the idea, ep. titled "$2 barrel tuner"). Once you've determined the best load to use attach the tuner and adjust. Have installed a couple of MATTHEW'S FABRICATIONS kydex cheek risers. Definite improvement regarding cheek weld consistency.

Got my son the 308 stainless version. Amazing accuracy, however, that stock is not adjustable. It looks like it is, but when I tried to remove the shim I was in for a sad surprise. It is designed in such a way that there is no way to fit a smaller shim on it and no way to remove the existing shim and add back the butt plate. I "re-engineered" the stock and it works well. I was also able to improve the trigger and I have it down to 1.5lbs. Before anyone says anything it is perfectly safe with the giant "AccuRelease" lever safety. Added a Leupold scope and off to the range. My son loves it. Heck, I love it. First two 150 SST handloads touching at 100yards. 0.75 MOA groups. Your mileage may vary. My son took a nice little 3 point with it as his first deer. Disclaimer: Never attempt to modify a trigger unless you know exactly what you are doing. Any modification that affects the operation of the firearm (ie. full auto) is illegal even if you did it by accident. But, this is a bolt gun, So no risk of that.

It's dumb that they don't design the butt pad to fit without the spacers. You can buy the youth model butt pad that will work without the spacer, just have to spend more money to make it work 🤑

Use a box cutter and trim the interior stock channel and ensure it is free floated. Rockite the forend and then spray seal waterproof it after Rockite dries to seal it. Rockite the rear of the stock under the recoil pad. It makes the stock rigid and adds weight to balance it. Ensure the action screws are torqued down to stock pillar bedding and take the trigger down to 3lbs. It is SUB MOA with handloads.

I got my first savage axis XP two in 2013 in a 30-06 I'm big fan but when they got rid of the Logo I haven't got the new one with out the logo and new stock. Good video my son has the Savage Axis one 243 win. He was to take it hunting for Deer. O ya it used for $150 he wanted New but $100 off New not bad.

@thelonggunner762
@thelonggunner762 Год назад
It had the wrong twist rate in the barrel when we got it. It had a 1 in 12 twist in it. (The varmint barrel ttwist rate) The factory style number says it was supposed to have the 1 in 9.25 twist which is more of a general purpose for deer and varmint capable of stabilizing heavier projectiles. Iwould bet there is a whole batch of rifles miss barreled just like mine out there. I saw they had a batch of 300 blackout guns go out with the wrong twist rate as well.

@thelonggunner762
@thelonggunner762 11 месяцев назад
The first barrel had a 1in 12 twist, at 50 yards the bullets were keyholing on paper. I used a cleaning rod with a jag and tight fitting patch to measure it.

@@thelonggunner762 Interesting. So it had a 22-250 twist rate but chambered for .243. Concerning that it slipped passed their QC. At least the bore wasn't constricted.
@thelonggunner762
@thelonggunner762 11 месяцев назад
@fredthompson1279 they make a heavy barrel varmint version that is supposed to be a 1 in 12 just for shooting light projectiles but the rest should all be the faster rate. Who knows what happened at the factory, might have been somebody's first day on the job🤣 got the setting mixed up. They made it right in the end though.

@@thelonggunner762 Ahh, didn't realize the made a slow twist for .243. Great that they quickly made it right. I put mine in a Boyds thumbhole stock. It loves the 75gr V max and 95gr SST by some Varget.

I think you could have shot some better groups if you could have preloaded the bipod. Your bench looked slick as ice and the gun was jumping all over the place. Yeah, that stock is definitely flimsy.
@thelonggunner762
@thelonggunner762 Год назад
Definitely had some issues with it. The gun doesn't weigh enough to hold itself down on the table like most of my other rifles do. I thought about shooting it prone on the ground but that also makes filming it more difficult.

I was just shooting all this ammo to do the break in period on the barrel, it should be speeding up as I went along throwing off results anyway. This will likely be the last factory ammo it ever shoots. I'll do velocity testing when I start the handloading process in a future video.

In reality this whole video is just me shooting at least 100 rounds through it to break the barrel in so I can start the load development next. At 100 yards the wind may have pushed them around a little but its still good enough to let me know if the gun likes the projectile or not and if its a candidate for reloading. This gun will probably never see another box of factory ammo again.

1st shot burned out the solvent????? You ever hear of hydraulic action in a barrel??? Never fire before the oils solvents and grease are cleaned out. That barrel is likely scrap.
@thelonggunner762
@thelonggunner762 6 месяцев назад
I cleaned the barrel with Shooters Choice MC 7 before starting and then again about half way through the testing. Even when you run a few dry patches down the barrel at the end of cleaning you never get all the solvent out. The first shots when chronographed are always off on velocity due to burning off the remaining chemicals.

You need a blanket under that bipod. Any downward torque will throw you off. You aren't going to get real accuracy with that tall butt bag either.
