Thanks for an easy video as to how to take the factory sights off the barrel, I just recently purchased a cheap 3-9x40 truglow scope for my Savage FXP and the back sight post was in the way.

I just did an upgrade to my 64F: I added some Williams Fiber Optic Fire Sights to it. Williams Sights do not list a replaceent sight for the Savage 62 or 64, but the Fire Sight for the Ruger 10/22 fits just fine. Mark the barrel with a pencil where the center of the front and right sight are located before removing them. Drift off the existing sights from in the barrel dovetail grooves with a brass punch from the left to the right side of the barrel. The front sight came off harder than the rear sight on my 64F. The rear site came off easily. Install the new fiber optic sights from right to left. Line up with the pencil marks to center the new sights. The front sight goes in harder than the rear. The rear sight has a set screw to hold it in place in the dovetail. The new rear sight has an adjustment for windage and elevation. The Part number for these sights are Williams PN 060213 or Ruger PN 90340.

Good information, thanks for putting it out there. My eyes have gotten bad enough that a scope is almost a must on a rifle for me, but others will find this useful information.

Squirrels and bunnies... but .22 have saved lives and murdered. Not a toy! .22 is still a powerful machine.

I agree completely. my grandmother lost a brother to a .22 short. A hunter missed a rabbit and hit him, always know what's behind your target as well.

What scope is that? Do you recommend after using it?
@FatManLeather
@FatManLeather 3 года назад
This was 6 years ago and I've sold that rifle long ago. I'm pretty sure it was a Bushnell but I'm not certain. The older Bushnell scopes were great and the higher end ones now are pretty decent too. It really depends on your budget. Nikon makes a great scope, even the low priced ones, that is if you can find one. I will be doing some scope reviews pretty soon for some budget models.

Good job, thanks for posting it. Where did you get the deal on the scope? What scope rings would you recommend?
@FatManLeather
@FatManLeather 5 лет назад
This was several years ago, don't remember where I got the scope. I use Weaver rings for the 3/8" dovetail, not the cheapest you can get but they are very good rings.

Thanks for the video. I tried putting the scope on last night. I don't have the levels or the bench :( I too realized when I was done, that the rear sight was right there where I wanted to put the cap on and couldn't. So I had to undo and move the scope back. I also noticed that the scope wasn't aligning with the barrel but pointed slightly left. This has me puzzled. It should align perfectly with the barrel if the action and barrel are aligned as they should be, right? How do I fix this? Would levelling the bottom rings be the answer? Move the rings forward maybe. Swap back and front ring? Turn them over to have the screws on the left like you had them? I'm pretty new to this. I guess I should buy a cheap level today but still won't have a bench.

But brackets and scope are using my barrel is not drilled for anything it's a model 64 ?
@FatManLeather
@FatManLeather Год назад
Most 22 rifles use a 3/8" dovetail style mount that uses the groves on the top of the receiver. I prefer Weaver rings and the diameter depends on the scope tube, in this case 1". No drilling or tapping needed.

Very cool, I do short haul. Mostly rock and such in the spring and fertilizer for a few weeks to the fields. Silage for feed and lime for the fields in the fall and most of the winter. I haven't bought my own truck but the guy I work for is great and pays me well and I like working for a small company, just added a third truck.

lol no I don't pay anyone, I simply use the correct tools, aka wheeler pro level an snap on micro torque wrench to properly torque the screws
@FatManLeather
@FatManLeather 7 лет назад
I only started using scopes the past few years so I haven't invested in all the necessary tools to mount them. I recently picked up a Wheeler torque driver and have a set of levels on my list when I get back to work this spring. Thanks for the advice.

why bother taking off iron sight?
@FatManLeather
@FatManLeather 9 лет назад
Usually it is best to keep the scope as close to the bore as possible. Most .22 scopes only have a 30mm objective, this one is 40mm and would hit the rear sight even when adjusted as low as possible. Removing it allowed me to keep the scope low without having to get taller rings.
@joncatamisan8681
@joncatamisan8681 6 лет назад
When you removed the rear sites, is the side you hammered out the same side as a lefty savage 64?

I have a Stevens model 84c, i want to put a scope on it and the guy said it isn't possible
@FatManLeather
@FatManLeather 4 года назад
Anything is possible. You may need to drill and tap the receiver. Try a competent gunsmith but it will probably cost more than the gun did. Look for some screws on top of the receiver that could be used to attach a scope mount.

I am having trouble finding rings that will fit on my Savage 62... what type of rings should I be looking for?
@FatManLeather
@FatManLeather 6 лет назад
Any rings for a 3/8" dovetail should work depending on your scope tube diameter.
@icallbs4613
@icallbs4613 7 лет назад
I see, well may I then recommend a quality torque wrench, an save yourself the headache an pass on the level level level by wheeler and get the wheeler professional level kit, so much better an way more accurate. I've compared my wheeler fat wrench to my snap on micro torque an found it to be very inaccurate.

@icallbs4613
@icallbs4613 7 лет назад
but seriously pass on the cheap level set called the level level level by wheeler, to many rifles I've used it on didn't have flat spots in the action that gave it a good base to start with. ohhh the fat wrench was dead on up to the 35 inch pound mark, at 50 it was at 59inch pounds an 60 showed zero change from the 50 setting.
@FatManLeather
@FatManLeather 7 лет назад
Very good to know about the Wheeler torque wrench. I can't afford Snap On anymore, just a poor truck driver. I will get the Wheeler pro level kit when I can, Thanks for the advice.
@wesleyshuntingfishingandre7059
Hey buddy what kind of scope mounts does the 64 need
@FatManLeather
@FatManLeather 6 лет назад
Any mounts for a 3/8" dovetail should work, most rings or mounts for rimfire rifles are for the 3/8" dovetail.

It will take 3/8" for the dovetail on the receiver and 1" or whatever your diameter your scope tube is.
