My sister retired a couple of years ago and with less income worried they wouldn't be able to buy a nice Christmas for their grandchildren. She put together a box for each grandchild of treasures she found at Goodwill over a long period of time and her grandchildren were thrilled with their gifts - as much as in other years!
My local shop collect all the new packaged toy donations for two months and then do a Christmas special shopping day with only new packaged toys. There are queues all down the road for this sale it is so popular.
You didn't buy the Pyrex bowls! "We put them back to bless someone else." Wow, that's kindness right there! You're an angel Emmy and I bet someone later that day, came home with those bowls super excited and happy. It can be very easy to grab the vintage bargains without any real need. You showed us in your gentle way, the practice of selflessness. And I'm in Ontario!
Several years ago from Goodwill, I purchased a brand new - tags still attached - alpaca sweater from Peru. The tag said $125!! And I believe it, because this is the very best sweater I have ever owned. Are you ready? The sweater cost $4. Best deal I have ever gotten from Goodwill. I don't shop retail stores for clothing except for bras and panties. I even buy nightwear there. So glad you pointed out this wonderful frugal place to shop to all your subs. Diane in NC
I tell my friends that are not thrift store people that restaurants wash their dishes and reuse their silverware glassware plates ie. I have a blessed beautiful life and it's blessed with quality finds mostly resale items.
My husband and I bought a little vacation place in WV for dirt cheap. We have zero budget for furniture and have been sleeping on a mattress in the bedroom. Today we found a beautiful, antique metal bed frame that we scooped up for $90. It was worth waiting to find the perfect piece at a great price. The alternative would have been a cheap, junky frame from Amazon.
As always I enjoyed your video. Must add that your milk & corn starch hack is a life saver for us. Due to health restrictions I've passed over many recipes that needed heavy cream & then you showed me the solution. Can't thank you enough. Our clam chowder soup will now be thick & creamy. AlFredo here I come.
I love thrifting and another reason to thrift that often goes unmentioned is that thrift stores are almost always non-profits supporting great charity work. Goodwill, for example does some great job training and school support for a lot of poeple who have had trouble finding employment. I love redirecting money I would have spent at a retail store to support such great grpups. Thanks for your wonderful channel. I really enjoy it. You always make me smile with your sweet greeting.
I've thrifted all my life and have had some amazing deals over the years. One Christmas, I thrifted every gift (all new with tag items) and spent hundreds less!! Love from West Virginia 💝💝
I loved this video! ❤️ I've been going to thrift stores since I was little. My mom brought my sister and I to them, and we all still go. Also, I love the soup recipe. Thank you for all the information you and Paul give to us. I'm in California.😊
In the summer,my area has Edgewater days.which is a huge yard sale. I asked about it, and hubby is going to save a little bit of money each pay period for me to go.it is generally the first week of June
I would absolutely have bought the Pyrex with the covers on them! I love to cook extra and put single size servings in them which saves my husband’s calls to take out for dinner when I’m working. I just spent $18 on 4 of those containers. They are awesome! They are dishwasher safe and no plastic touches the food.
I used to visit our local Goodwill to get toys and other goodies for my elementary classroom prize bins. Lots of great finds, and teachers would get an extra 20% off on Wednesdays, which really helped to stretch my teacher budget!
It's been a thrifty week for you'all, not buying anything at the thrift store. I like to "tell the universe" what I need before thrifting. It helps in finding the "some thing" I really need. This way I'm not distracted by everything that I don't need. Missouri, in the house. By way of our Oklahoma and Florida roots, with lengthy stays in Philly, the Pine Barrens of New Jersey, Oahu, and Colorado. I learned about sushi and poi long before I learned about bagels and lox. And thrift is our family tradition.
Hi Emmy and Paul. I am watching you from the island of Oahu in the state of Hawaii. I must say, your Goodwill store is so organized! Wow, it is so easy to find things that one might need. Those dish sets of four were a real deal to me. I thought for sure Emmy would have grabbed that vintage Pyrex; good job Emmy. I haven't been to Goodwill in about 30 years but I remember everything being everywhere and having to hunt for things. I am really proud that our adult children are frugal and almost never pay full price for anything. Our son and his wife are expecting their first child and have received almost everything the baby will need, gently used, from their friends and church members. Why go out and buy things when others are willing to give them away?
I thrift almost everything! Food processor $22, hand mixer $3, my colander was only $.99 at my thrift shop, in sink dish rack, Yankee candles new and used are a fraction of the cost of new ones, school folders, puzzles, bread pans, boots, jackets, jeans, leggings. I thrift first, then go to a store for new if I can’t find what I need.
I bought a new ( still had the label) cashmere sweater for my son’s Christmas present from the charity shop here in the U.K.. the original ticket said £80 the charity ticket was £8 🥳👌
Not all Goodwill stores operate the same. In Central Florida .. just yesterday... those $.99 Phaltzgraph mugs are $4.99 each. T-shirts can be $6.99 if they have a "brand name" label.
Great video! We are trying to buy all our clothes (apart from underwear) from charity shops now as the prices are SO much better! I'm handy with a sewing machine too and can take in/let out/make new as needed. We are watching from Caerphilly, South Wales, UK 🏴 XX
Thank you Emmy and Paul for another collection of great ideas. I love thrift stores(charity shops) for all the different reasons, saving money, re cycling and just generally find it more interesting to come across things for the home that we need, and also looking and leaving items for others who will enjoy or need them, this gives me pleasure to imagine the joy of their find. I am from the UK and we don't call ours thrift store but charity shops. Great as always, thank you both for your calming and cozy approach x
What great inventory at that Goodwill! I live in a large city and I have a hard time finding such lovely items at thrift stores. I have some that I love and go through a few at times. One of my daughters love thrift stores as well--she likes to re-purpose things. She's very creative. I do buy clothing at thrift stores and when people turn up their noses, I say, "these things look just like what's currently in my closet--worn and washed a few times". I'm nearing retirement so my home is fully furnished and I don't need new decor or kitchen items. Sometimes I buy something that is better/prettier than what I own and donate my old one. I like to give to charities that support the unhoused.
That Goodwill store was so much cleaner and more organized than the last one I was in. We have a newer, bigger Goodwill store in town now that I will check out. It would be a pleasure to shop there. The soup looks delicious and made me hungry. Thank you for making simple, frugal living so much fun. Bye from Southwestern Iowa.
I recently found your channel and have been binge watching it since!!! You two are adorable! Your hints and recipes are wonderful... and Emmy, your smile is contagious!!! Looking forward to all of your future videos! Blessings to you both!
I am from Massachusetts. I shop Goodwill all the time. I usually buy up all the musical instruments to give to students who don't have money to buy an instrument. So, this way I can give the gift of music. I always look in the glass wear and things in that area. I use "Nalgene Bottles" to bring my I ice water to school every day. I get them for 3 dollars. in the stores they are 25. I live very frugal, and love going on a hunt to find something special. You never know what you will find. Thrifting Fun!
Hello from Maine! I love shopping at my local Good Will and Salvation Army stores! It's good for the planet as well as the pocket book! I adore kale and am quite certain I can "veganize" that recipe! I bet it would be fabulous in the Instant pot!
A thrift store I like to go to got a donation from an upscale boutique that recently closed. I got two tops, marked at $34.99 each, for just $3 each. I also got a gold ring for $10 at the same store.
Just made a half batch of the soup. Very good. I used Kale I had in the freezer and since it wasn't enough I used the extra leaves that came off of Brussel sprouts for tonight dinner. Even the kids had some!
Love thrifting, both for economical and environmental reasons. I don't get people who wouldn't even consider second hand because somebody else used it before them- every time you eat out - you use second hand glass, plate, cutlery etc LOL And when you staying in the hotel - you are sleeping in a bed that 100s of people slept in, same with towels and bedding etc. My husband was such a person until explained to him and its changed his view completely :) Love your channel, so gentle and encouraging, just what we need in these uncertain times. Lots of Love from Belfast - Northern Ireland
Hi both (and the lovely Miss Dixiebelle) I’m from WALES, U.K. and have been a subscriber for about a year. I have just lost 70 lbs and so the wonders of thrift stores or as we call them in the U.K. , ‘charity shops have become a necessity for me. I had no clothes that fitted me and as a new retiree could not justify paying full price for a whole new wardrobe. I have also found some great homeware items in them for a fraction of the cost of new, so I’m definitely a convert. Keep the videos coming, I just love them xxx
I love thrifting! I just got back from the DAV thrift store just over the border in VA from me! I actually even rethought some items I had picked up and put them back. Made me feel good about everything I bought, money well spent!!!
Low carb hack for the soup - use diacon radishes or regular radishes for potatoes. You will not be able to taste the radish…great sub…really. I make it all the time and freeze some for later. Also can use spinach instead of kale.
I enjoy thrifting too, it is an extra treat to find stuff with new tags on them still. I even pick up stuff for a relative. When I'm on vacation or out of town I try to check out thrift stores in other areas. Looking at the items is sometimes like walking through recent history. I'm in Wisconsin.🐄
I *always* look for used first :). Reminder that you can also get great deals on FB Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, etc. Also Poshmark and ThredUP are great online sources for used clothing. Our puppy is coming home in a couple of weeks and we've gotten virtually everything for his care (playpen, crate, leash, harnesses, bowls, gently used toys, blankets, even a full box of brand new puppy pads) USED. So while the puppy's not frugal LOL, at least we've saved on all of the other things! Thanks for the video and the recipe!!
Ive been thrifting for years. Its my favorite way to shop. My mother loves the gifts I collaborate from the thrift stores. Its better and more affordable than any store bought brand new items.
I'm a middle school history and Spanish teacher living on the Eastern Shore of Maryland in Dorchester County. Harriet Tubman's birth place! I just want to tell you I have a huge collection of what I'm calling "Emmy Recipies." Every one has been a keeper! Thank you!
Love thrifting...found a waffle maker recently $4 which also can be a griddle!! And also a 7 pack of peg games....$3.99! I love the adventure...also buy books and movies super prices! Love the recipes!!
Love you videos, you are so lucky to have massive thrift stores in the USA, we live in a small town in England and have to travel long distances to find thrift stores which are bigger than just shops, however I have over the years had wonderful buy’s. We don’t have tag sales or garage sales or estate sales like you, also being able to put things on the sidewalk every month and people can pick any item up if it is going be of use to them. God Bless 🙏✝️🇬🇧
I volunteer in a charity shop, the UK equivalent of your thrift store and I'm always surprised by the number of items donated new with tags. Thanks for another great recipe! Watching from Isle of Wight, uk.
That soup looked wonderful. I actually have all the ingredients in my pantry to make that soup. I had to laugh at the thrift store. I used to have that rust colored pyrex bowl set from back in the eighties. That was a big color in decorating back then. Love your channel and your rumba dog!
Just made this soup. I used reg flour in milk 1/2 tbsp. Wow!! Husband ...not a soup fan and he gave it 9 out of 10 stars. Thank you so much. Also you spaghetti pie is 10 stars..wonderful. Love you and Paul
Beautiful footage. Y'all must get up every morning before dawn. I'm a sunset girl myself. I've enjoyed them all around the world and believe they're good for your soul. Visiting Sicily once, I made a point to get to a high point in each part of the island to savor the sunset with an amazing red wine. Definitely a lovely memory!
Soup is always delicious! I love shopping at thrift stores! People do not realize that you are going to wash the things you buy but come on when you buy in the stores you are surely going to wash those as well because everyone has been trying those on!!! Same with dishes etc. Now facts are out there!!
You are spot on! Thrifting can run hot or cold. For me the key is to not feel I have to have something. It’s okay to leave empty handed, just like you did. If you are buying to buy, it’s not a bargain! The soup is amazing! I will be making, for sure! My husband and I reside in Grand Haven, Michigan. It’s a beautiful Lake Michigan beach town in western Michigan.
Thrifting is a real adventure - you never know what you will find. I have received compliments on decor, furniture and items of clothing I wear and it just makes me smile. It proves you can live well frugally. I'm posting from Canada. Thank you for your helpful and encouraging videos. 💐
I get the majority of my clothing from charity shops I love the bargains and the find. I also like ebay and vinted. I've been doing a no spend February and haven't bought a single thing except groceries. Loving your videos and your warmth. Sending love from Scotland 🏴❤
I purchased a lovely summer dress, jeans, and new leggings/socks at thrift stores. Even if they are new the price is reduced. I attend thrift stores that are helping handicapped and local charities. My sister, daughter, and I go together. We are passing on that reuse, recycle, refurbish tradition. When we find other needed items we purchase and pass them on to family and friends.
I just love you and Paul - such cool people. I started thriving during COVID-19 in NYC and saved a bundle! Now I have a hard time paying retail - I’m a Frugral Fran for sure at 48 yrs old 😂
Good morning! Watching from Phoenix Arizona. My husband is from Gloversville NY and I am originally from NJ so we LOVE your accents! Makes me feel at home. 🥰 I pulled out the ingredients for the soup...its the only soup my husband will eat at Olive Garden so thanks for the recipe. 😋 I'm surprising him tonight with it for dinner. We thrift for practical items all the time! 20 years ago I was blessed to find a BRAND NEW WITH TAGS wedding dress! Apparently t hff E original owner changed her wedding theme ...can you believe it? It was stunning and I never would have been able to purchase it new. It's funny but after years of thrifting, its extremely difficult for me to pay full price for anything! Thank you for sharing another great video! Have a blessed day and looking forward to seeing your next video. 💖
They did a documentary on the fashion industry and with fast fashion many people wear their items less than 2 times and some not all hence so many are new with tags. Also many think their clothes are being recycled back into clothes but that is often not possible, so by buying used or new preloved clothes we help the planet tremendously. I always check for stains (inside and out) on clothes and very import I always check the zip on bags and trousers sometimes it is only when you sit down with pants, you realize why those trousers were donated. Ceramics with crazing and chips I stay away from and not all electrics show faults immediately so test a few times first. Generally though 80% of the items are great in particular vintage items, they are great gift ideas and may even be a longer term investment.
Made “Zuppa toscana” for dinner last night before I saw your video. I’m challenging myself to use only what is in our fridge/freezer and pantry for the month of February and only buying milk and eggs. For the soup I used leftover ham from Christmas instead of bacon, pak Choi that we froze from our garden, some red peppers, carrots and turnips instead of potatoes. Had a little leftover rice so added that also. I did use sausage.😋watching from Utah
The way I look at it when people buy new clothes is like buying used because people are constantly trying on the new clothes. So it's like they are used.
Great recipe, thank you! I grew up in northern Maine, but I have traveled everywhere and have even lived in Germany. I now live in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri. I am slowly going back and watching your older videos in support of your wonderful channel. Xx
I am a seasoned thrifter of 30+ yrs. All my furniture and 95% of my clothing and kitchen ware is thrifted. Absolutely no shame 😊 I put all the saving in the bank...Lol. 2 yrs ago I thrifted a $1.00 watch out of a junk jewelry basket....turned out it is a Fendi watch worth $900. My most recent purchases this last year...I needed a "newer" couch....ended up thrifting my living room couch for $50 in mint condition that retails for $3000......and wanted a bread maker...thrifted a brand new Zojirushi Bread machine for $15 that's on Amazon for $326.00. No one should pay full price....if they don't want to.👍 I am located in Chapel Hill, NC. Enjoy your content on here!!
I've always loved thrift shopping! I started in high school a million years ago, looking for vintage clothing. I never stopped! My husband and I loved going junking and finding treasures!
Hi, from England. I look in charity shops for things I need. Sometimes you have to be patient and wait for what you need to turn up! Love buying from Facebook Marketplace too. Currently waiting for a curtain pole and curtains to turn up🔎
My daughter has six children and has been buying from Goodwill for the kids as the grow for a long time now, she has been frugal for a long time now also . That she is building a house now using cash no mortgage for her. I’ve will be working on organizing and downsizing this spring . There is so much we don’t use anymore in this season of life.
Hello from New Hampshire! I have never commented on a video before but I wanted to tell you what an encouragement your videos are. You are so positive and have such a great message to share. Thank you and God bless you both!
Geez, I wish we had a beautiful Goodwill store! I only went to Goodwill a couple times (trying to be a good steward) but I couldn’t keep doing it because it’s just trashy. Prices weren’t even a great deal. You’re very fortunate to have that gem! 🙂
I was raised going to The Goodwill and even trash picking! There is no shame in my game! Lol Thank you for every video you make! I’m from Midwest, Ohio!❤️
Hi Emmy. I'm from South Africa. Wish we had thrift stores like your Goodwill here. We have charity shops that often have very old used items. Very little that looks attractive or appealing. I love your recipes and have tried many of them with a lot of success.
Oh Emmy.. I love love love thrifting. At least 90% of my husbands and my clothing come from thrifting. Unfortunately I've sworn off going for awhile because I do not need anything and I'm not sure I would have the willpower not to buy. LOL. Its a great place to find everyday items if you are starting a new household. My DIL got wooden curtain rods for her entire home, a bakers rack, a brand new microwave ($7.50) Curtains, dishes and so many more items for her home for a fraction of the cost of buying new. I donate alot back also. About an hour from me they have a Goodwill outlet where they take things that didn't sell in the stores and dump them in big bins. I have never been but I heard you can purchase things for like 99 cents each. Our local Goodwill has raised prices so the bargins are not that good. We have a few smaller thrift stores also that have better bargins but not as much selection. Part of the fun is the hunt for the bargin.
In some states at the goodwill the color of the week means we get the item for half off the price in Maine and Massachusetts where my daughter lives this is true. People buy books second hand and sell them on Amazon for big money little. AMAZON FBA JUST SHIP THEM TO AMAZON AS THEY SELL YOU GET SENT MONEY. LOOK INTO IT. PEOPLE ARE MAKING BIG MONEY.
I live in the Florida panhandle. I love thrifting. I have lots of vintage Pyrex, Fire King and Glasbake bakeware and other dishes. I use them all the time. I love your channel.
Please check to make sure you’re still subscribed to our channel. We put a video out every single Friday and a short video every single Tuesday. We haven’t missed one in years lol!
As always, very great content, and coming from a place of love. Always watch you from Nova Scotia, you're both kind people, that comes through in every video.
Hi Emmy and Paul. I watch you from Wallis Lake NSW Australia. I am blessed to live in such a lovely little settlement. A fair distance from the nearest town but quiet and beautiful.
I am watching from Inyokern, CA! We have found so many good finds at thrift stores over the years. We got a Kirby vacuum for $5 on a half-off day, which worked perfectly after a little tune up. My father in law got my KitchenAid mixer from Goodwill. The picture frame on my bedside table is from Goodwill and I absolutely LOVE it! We have bought used cars and trailers, used computers, used phones, used appliances, used tools, used furniture and mattress, used household stuff, used clothes, and more from thrift stores, garage sales, online buy / sell apps like Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, or Poshmark. Buying used and being frugal got my husband through his Bachelor's and Master's degrees 100% debt free. Now that both of us are working, we have started buying some things new, but still we try to shop around for deals. It's funny you mentioned Dixie is your Roomba! We actually bought one this weekend. I definitely resisted on getting one, but my husband finally talked me into it. It is actually pretty nice, because our property is all dirt, and sweeping is a neverending job!
Hi Emmy and Paul - LOVE LOVE LOVE your channel - you talk about all my interests. You are such a lovely couple and such an encouragement to many - lots of love - Maureen (South Africa)
I have found new items at the goodwill cheap or .50 . Plus I’ve bought pans that my mom had. Also glass Pyrex 3pc mixing bowls that were brand new for less than $5.00. I refuse to buy my under garments. I’ve bought old Pyrex divided bowl three times. Gave one to my daughter and the other two I dropped at separate times and broke. My daughter buys dresses and skirts from the 50’s she loves that time period. My granddaughter loves the 60’s. Can get great deals at the charity and antique stores. Will try the soup. Love it from Olive garden
My family loves zuppa toscana. I put coconut milk in it instead of cream or milk because some if us have a dairy allergy. You can barely notice the difference!
I love thrifting, majority of my clothes are from Goodwill, I bought for huge discounts! I have found so many items from thrifting, name brand etc. I love 2nd hand things.
