I made a few WIP blankets and gave them as gifts. I took unfinished projects. And if they were not flat, I made them flat by sewing closed or frogged so I had a portion of it. I crocheted around those wips and samples and put them into a multi shape collage format, fitting them as puzzle pieces or turning them into strips, rectangles and squares....... arranged them and crocheted together and BOOM. Multicolored multi shape motif afghans! I got rid of most of my WIP piles doing this!!
That's what I'm doing! I have so much yarn leftovers. My mom's stuff and others that friends have given me...Oh my world! My niece seen a granny square bag at Walmart for $25.-30.00, I said, girl! I can make you one! REALLY! she says. So, that's what I'll be doing with some of my scrap yarn. I may even make me one 😃 Thanks for the tips!
I have a make ahead tote box. It is where i have put project that i did that didnt have an original recipient. Right now there are couple of blankets and shawls plus some cross stitched puctures
Thanks for the tips, for the ideas for projects that fit the quantity of stash yarn available, and, most of all, for the encouragement! I have been able to use lots of your tutorials and patterns to create whole projects and embellishments for other projects. I appreciate your talents for creating easy patterns and demonstrating your techniques. Thank you, Jayda!
Great ideas! I'm guilty of running out to buy new yarn for every project but I'm trying to shop my stash this year. One of my ideas is to use my mini skeins and scraps to make cat toys (lots of free ornament patterns can be used for stuffed toys) for my son's cats.
I am making gifts from my stash for Christmas. So far a horse, a zebra, a cat..still have a lion and doll clothes to go. If time..a few hats. Love your ideas! I made scrappy pumpkins from Ginelle on utube and used lots of scraps.
I did have to go yarn shopping as I've moved into a rainbow sharehouse and needed cotton yarn in every colour of the rainbow for some gifts. I donated a bunch of yarn I was probably never going to use (a friend gave me lots of acrylic) to a local second hand craft shop so other people could pick up the things they need for super cheap.
Such great tips. You are so right that we can shop our stash and supplies. My stash is small, but going through it I found I had a small pile of granny squares tucked away. So I used your tutorial on creating a scarf from granny squares and the one on joining granny squares. Your tutorials are excellent. Thank you.
I like to make blankets, really large blankets. I have a laundry basket of leftover yarn so I started making scrap granny blankets and random granny squares. Dummy me would but another skein of any color I didn't have enough of rather than just start a new color in that row when I ran out. I'm trying to force myself to just "go with it" and let colors just flow rather than make each row a single color. I did polymer clay for a while and I've decided it would be handy for making buttons or toggles. I never get rid of previous craft items just because I'm not into that craft anymore, I know at some point somerhing in that horde will come in handy for some new hobby. I've decided to try Tunisian crochet and knitting and I think my leftover yarn so be handy for that as well.
I’m working on a granny square blanket / pillow… every time I have a piece of yarn that’s not enough to do anything real with it, I add it to this growing granny square. Sometimes I can get a full round and sometimes I can’t. It’s very colorful.
Jayda, one of my favorite things to put in my make-ahead stash for Christmas is from your stocking pattern! You haven’t done a tutorial for it, but it’s a GREAT gift bag or party favor for Christmastime! It can be varied by yarn size or hook size and is plain enough to be dressed up with rhinestone buttons or lovely ribbon, or can have a picot edge at the top; it can be done in multiple colors; it lends itself well to appliqués (I’ve made Christmas scenes); and it’s the cutest shape!!! I love making them and having them available for coworkers, newlyweds (the ones I make with chunky yarn), neighbors, and people at church - and they’re SO versatile!!!! 💕💕💕
Hi Matilda, that's fantastic! Somehow stockings are crazy fun to make because you can keep changing the colours, the size, the stitch, the yarn, the edging etc. and get something super adorable each time!
I allow myself only two projects going at a time. I finish one of the two before I start another. When I buy yarn for a project I pin a piece of paper to yarn stating what I intend to use the yarn for and if it is for someone and any information needed.
I have probably mentioned this in the past but I feel it bears repeating, your purple granny squares are probably my favorite thing that you have! If I came to your house I would be awfully tempted to pinch them LOL 😘 (I wouldn't really. But I don't doubt at all you understand the sentiment 🤣)
Hi Jayda, thank you for all the great ideas. I do have a huge, magic ball the size of a soccer ball and always considered it scrap. I didn't plan on doing anything with it but don't have the heart to throw it away either. I just keep adding to it. You just gave me some of the greatest ideas to try and use it up. Thank you. 💖
I am looking for a girl's DRAW-STRING PURSE tutorial, possibly finished on the bottom with fringe. My grandmother crocheted some for all her granddaughters 50 years ago and I would love to make some for my great-nieces today. Thanks for the encouraging video, Jayda!
Hi Julie! I love those vintage looks 😁 We've got several fun purse tutorials here including this really scrappy one (with a vintage boho feel) that you could definitely add some fringe too: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d7nxVv-d1c0.html
My resolution is going to be I'm going to crochet only at a certain time of year or when someone asks me to make something for them I've done it way too much and it's been distracting me really bad especially in relationships
That was great, Jayda, Thank you! It's getting towards the end of another year, so I've been checking out and taking stock of my yarn and other craft supplies. Speaking of granny squares, would you consider designing an adult granny square sweater?
Hi JayCee! It's a great way to save ourselves some money (something we could all use more of these days!) Thank you for the suggestion! Did you have a chance to check out our Granny Sweater Live Stream a while back? It's one way to make a granny square sweater (there are so many!). You can find it here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0344PP_4870.html
I started a 8 point blanket for a work Team Leader. Using a skein of older RHSS yarn. Its so pretty. But its older so I decided to use that as an accent color. I had a skein of Michael's brand yarn that is still in circulation..I need another skein but have a 40% off one item coupon.
You can do it! I did the "Buy No Yarn for a Year Challenge" a few years ago and I did pretty well! Not to mention I made space in my craft room by using up my yarn!
I've been making items and toting them around for 3 months to the Farmer's Market and fairs--I have a very large Bag o' Scraps!! My family is weird-they'd rather drop $$$ for some Made in China hat with a fancy designer label than have something handmade!
Ya, unfortunately some people are like that... A few years ago I made several throws as Christmas presents and didn't get even one "thank you." Never again, I make for charity these days...
At some point in time, I'm not sure when, it suddenly meant more to buy a gift than make one. In our family, gifts have to be consumable, handmade or an experience 😊
Hi Nancy, depending on the project, yes! Our Scrapghan, for example, allows for multi weights. You can see that here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-y2Gln0u9H08.html
Hi Kimberly! We've got a live stream on making a Granny Square sweater and another video on making a basic Tunic Sweater (we call it our Groovy Poncho here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YgqLqFnAk5s.html ) and we're working on making a cardigan tutorial that folks can make for themselves to fit perfectly 💗
Hi Anthony, there are many ways to do that, you might want to try our Bobble stitch blanket here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-JJN3Bd6waVA.html or our Bean Stitch hat here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IWQcg_2aINo.html
Hi! Practice 😁 That's basically it! You can make small projects like granny squares or dishcloths to get comfortable with different stitches and different yarns and even different hook sizes - all of which affects our tension. After a while, your fingers and muscles will start to understand the repetition and your tension will smooth out 💗
