Lori, when my children were small and I worked 2pm to 10pm, I would make dinner when I was preparing their breakfast. As you say, dinner comes along every day and I was just too tired as my day went on to stop and make dinner. It was such a blessing to have dinner prepared early in the day that I kept that habit even after I left that job! I'm retired now and guess what! I still make dinner in the morning so my afternoons are free to do what I like without concern of stopping to make dinner. It really cuts down on the desire for eating out too.

Hi Lori/Laurie (spelling isn’t my jam). I love watching your videos. You are comforting in a sea of doom and gloom on RU-vid. Thanks for being a light. 💖. I’m doing a pantry challenge but I allow a low spend. This week I spent $7.50 on groceries. Next week, hopefully $10 or less.

Thank you for your sincerity and honesty! I think almost everyone wastes food. I now have a compost container in my kitchen and will use the compost in my garden. My meal planning is usually great... if I'd just stick to the plan!😂 We all have areas in need of improvement! Thank you for making us feel that we are not alone in our struggles!😊

Thx Lori. I’ve always been a frugal shopper. I shop for the 2 grocery stores that have online flyers. No Walmart closer than 20 miles. I meal plan around only what is on sale. I don’t eat processed food or unhealthy snacks. I don’t waste food. All my veggie scraps go into a zip bag and into the freezer. I make my own stocks with them. Can use a crock pot for this. I could go on and on! I’d love to learn some of the DIY techniques. Good luck to you dear. ❤

A like shopper! I, too, never, ever meal plan before I shop every food storage place in the house, then what's on sale, and what I find in store, unadvertised, discounted items. We keep a running list in a small spiral notebook. I look at grocery ads every week for things that are on the list, and (if a really good sale) things to stock up a bit. Yours is the first post I have ever read that does that, too. I will never understand why anyone would meal plan before looking at all ads finding discounted items in-store. I don't remember the last time I paid full price for anything. If I did that, our grocery costs would be much higher. Of course, we never, ever, waste food. The rare occasion that salad greens get limp, go in veg or bean soup. I make a "cream" soup base from any kind of white beans. Scraps go in zip bags for future stock. I'm not picky about making stock ... beef bones go in with chicken because in this house, stock is stock. I freeze things that "can't" be frozen, like the 12 boxes of cream cheese I found for .50/box.

@@tamaraliscia3408 Thanks for your kind words. My family immigrated from Germany just prior to WWII and that’s how we learned to use food and not be wasteful. Now it’s comparable to living on rations back then. Clean diet with a large garden. Best lifestyle.

Southern frugal mama uses the envelope system and she has an envelope specifically for snacks and treats for the kids which I think is a brilliant idea. It all allows you to have that envelope and that money when you need it and it doesn’t take out of your specific grocery budget I also would like to learn how to make cheese and things from my powdered milk that I have in my pantry one thing that I’m gonna add to my plan this year is to buy 20 or $30 gift cards to Aldi and just put them in my binder to have as a back up for when things are ridiculously tight or kind of as a piece of mind grocery emergency situation

My goal this year is simply to eat down almost all of the stock that we have onhand, without waste I hope. For at least the first 3 months of 2024, I don't want to spend anything at the grocery for anything other than dairy products, household supplies such as medications, cleaning stuff, and whatever else it takes to keep the house up and going, and of course, pet feed. We don't have a lot of food waste here because what we don't eat, there is plenty of wildlife that grateful and I also split veggie and fruit scraps between my neighbors and my in laws chickens, goats and so on. I get eggs out of the sharing of scraps, so I'm very happy with that. After 3 months, I will re-evaluate and see if we still need to keep eating out of our fridge, freezers, and pantries or if I need to add meat to my grocery list. Any sweets or snacks will be homemade.

Some of the things I do to be frugal (if someone already posted this in the comments-im sorry!) 1. I have a grocery budget that works for my family. There are 8 of us (my husband, myself, and 6 kids) with baby #7 on the way. I usually spend it all at one time at one store and save $5 from the budget just in case we need more bread, produce, etc that week. 2. We don't qualify for food stamps, but my three kids under 5 have wic. It helps A LOT especially when it comes to formula and fresh produce. I also get it up to 6 months after baby #7 is born. Whenever things change for us financially, we will stop using wic, but until then this has been a BIG blessing to us. 3. Eat simple meals. We eat the same things for breakfast and lunch every day. Produce is what is in season. 4. We buy products to make meals, not ready made meals. If we have frozen pizza or entrees it was a gift. 5. Snacks are an extra. 😮 My kids do get one snack a day-usually right before bed. But sometimes our dinners/suppers are so filling they don't need anything. Snacktime will pass, and they still will be playing so i know they're not hungry. 😅 Lol. 6. Junk food makes you want more, but real food is more satisfying. So buy junk food as a treat for maybe once a week.

Yes to Walmart pickup! Like you, in 2024 I really want to tighten up my grocery budget. I no longer have a houseful of little kids (just a 23 year old left now), but I detest going grocery shopping since 2020. I'd rather order online, go there and have them load up my trunk and go home. I have decided to spend less money at the grocery, use what I have, my husband does the garden, hunts and fishes. On a sad note this morning I discovered that the son did not close the upright freezer all the way Wednesday morning.....we lost hundreds of dollars of meat. I don't have the money to fill it back up, so I will be looking for good quality meat on markdowns and on sale to accomplish this. It has been a sad day.

As a mom of grown children, one of the best decisions I made to handle food requests was to take only one child with me ( with the exception of babies or non verbal toddlers) to the grocery store. Then I chose one or two types of food that my child could choose by themselves for the family that week. I just rotated through the children. This was a game changer because they knew at one point they could choose exactly what they wanted. It could be the type of bread, chips, desserts, cheese, deli meat, condiments, cereal, oatmeal, etc. And they learned how much food cost because they were involved individually every few weeks. I gave them a dollar limit for their choices so I knew it was within our budget. I had to work around my husband’s schedule but it was worth it because I got time alone with each child and still accomplished our task. And They learned invaluable skills.

Hi Lori! One of my 2024 goals is to be healthier in addition to only buying essential groceries and not wasting. So instead of buying powdered collagen, I'm making a huge pot of bone broth every week and trying to drink 1-2 quarts hot each day. I never grocery shop from a store. I always shop my well stocked pantry. I never have only one item. I have multiples depending on what the item is. When I get below a certain number of an item it goes on my list. I shop to keep my pantry stocked but not for regular daily meals. If that makes sense. By shopping this way I can wait for a good deal or sale and rarely do I ever run out of an item. It also has gotten to a point where my monthly food costs are quite low. I also garden and put up as much as I am able throughout the year. Another massive savings for our food costs.

I L❤VE your videos! This one really resonated with me as my goals for the new year are similar. I’m trying to adapt to cooking for two, our ‘old teenager’ boys are away at school so it’s been quite an adjustment. One of the things that really motivates me is to figure out the cost of each meal, I make a game of it. Also have found that it’s more fun to clean out the basement freezers if we do that as a game - my husband will pull out a few items at random, and I’ve got to find the best ways to use them. It’s my home edition of that show ‘Chopped’! A skill I’d really like to build on is making various kinds of yeast breads. I’ve done it, but am always nervous! Best of everything to you and your family, and many blessings!

There's 2 in our household, too. ... me (a widow) and my single adult son who has a small attached apartment. We share the food budget and cooking because it saves money. We both eat 2 meals a day, the first about noon, but not together because of his schedule. One thing he suggested quite some time ago that works very well. ... "A" days which are days we cook, and "B" days are days we do not cook. We eat leftovers on "B" days. I make soup, stew or chili once a week on an "A" day ... we eat as leftovers and I freeze some and always keep 1 or 2 quarts in the refrig for a snack meal, or "B" day. So, we cook on M, W, F. Saturday is whatever. Sunday is always a brunch and for evening, soup, or whatever for dinner, if hungry. You do your own "Chopped" TV show... how fun!

I am with you Lori on all these things. I am pulling out meat the night before to defrost.2 days ago I wanted to have a pot roast in the crockpot for last nights dinner but I didn't want to wake up at 6 am to put it in the crockpot so I put it in the night before on low and it was ready yesterday morning I unplugged the crockpot it was warm still when we ate last night and I only had to bake the biscuits and make box mac and cheese for my special needs son. I am meal planning and sifting through the freezers for those weird meats that arecin the freezer and I don't know what to do with I am going to force myself to take and figure these things out. I am also going to be making more from scratch. And I am going to use Aldi more to save some money I shop walmart for convenience but i need to be looking for lowest prices. I also need to shop my grocery outlet first, Aldi second walmart last. We really need to get these grocery budgets in check this year. Take care Lori!

Lori, I'm about a third of the way into the video, this is great! I heard a couple years ago about the idea "dinner by 10," meaning that by 10 AM we have decided "what's for dinner," that gives us several hours to handle the logistics (cook, purchase, prep, etc.) to make dinner happen at dinner time. Fyi, I'm 66, and I'm learning this in my golden years. I'm a late in life mom, with young adults at home. I'm teaching them these life/money skills.

Sometimes I will order everything from one store, but a lot of time I make an order from each store, according to which store has the best price on the items on my list. And what a time saver! I did buy green peas and lentils, Aldi had them on sale for .99 cents a bag. I brought 7 bags of each. I spent 300 plus we ate out pizza 15.00, and Burgerking, 15.00 for the month of January. That included ingredients to make dog food and one large bag of dry for morning. Also, included, a large bag of rice, whole wheat flour, spices I was out of I buy in bulk.

For one week, shop from your pantry. Go in there to see what you have. Take paper & pencil with you, if you think that will help. For each item, come up with a meal idea, or some way you can make the best use of each item. Once that is done, make yourself a coffee or tea, take a big cleansing breath, then sit down and make a meal plan for one week, making use of as many pantry items as you can, using the oldest items first. Doing this weekly will help you use up the surplus “stuff” you have in your pantry. Once you get down to a more manageable stockpile, you can organize everything according to either purchase date, or expiration date. This is when you also need to get in the habit of putting the newest purchases at the back. All of these steps will combine to give you a neater, more organized pantry with a lot less waste. Your money will also go a lot further. 😉

We start in about April and it gives a good start to plants. Wintersewing is talked about on youtube. So easy. Takes up little space. Water ocassionally. Light is needed. I hate hate hate Walmart. Ours is soooo bad you can't drag me into it but for SOME reason delivery service from them and having product goes very well while I'd bet if I went into the store it would be he opposite. I know not everywhere has delivery but if you do, THAT is the way to go. Instead of pickup even. Yes, I tip but free delivery with the annual membership and I don't even pay, I use a relative's, and it does the same thing, I don't pick up items that I see or buy because I am in the store, I don't even have to waste gas, get in the car and go get pickup, etc. I am on the tightest budget most could imagine but delivery is worth it and saves me. If your order is $35 (and how hard is that with grocery prices today) and you don't need your order in the next hour or two, delivery is free. I don't load the trunk, have to unload it,, etc. it comes right to my door. The other tip that I probably most identify with is I tend to stock and buy what I might want to make one day so get such ingredients but have learned that I am just too busy and I fall back on the same things time and time again. When I wasn't working, it worked to do otherwise and I would experiment with recipes, do something different, use the things I'd buy but I am back in the workforce now and wish I had time as I LOVE to cook when time but even though I vary a lot, I fall back to the same proteins, same needed pantry goods, etc. And buying others because one day I am going to use those sun dried tomatoes or try that rissoto meal I saw just never happens. Etc. And those things just sit in the cupboard with the intent to use them one day every time I come across them but I never do. I'm not saying I never vary meals, I do a LOT but I make a fair variety of things from just a few proteins and pantry goods that can vary it from Italian to Mexican to Asian, etc. and I more rely on the various spices and sauces, etc. It's similar with veg. I can buy a variety but mostly fall back to he same faves. So I'm learning to just order more of what I use constantly and forget the things I think I may use or am going to try one day and throwing out far less food. Great show. To the best for all in 2024!

I laughed to myself when you started talking about making pudding! I’m old enough that we had home ec. In school. We spent for ever learning how to make biscuits from scratch and then spent a long time learning to make pudding from scratch! I still have the recipes we used! I love homemade warm pudding!

I can understand about the amazon. I made the same mistake in the past when I put items I like (not need) in the cart and my husband bought them all (because it’s his account I use) and he’s ready to buy his stuff. It happened twice so I told my husband to ask me first before buying my stuff. Now when I like or think I need something from amazon, I put them in the cart then click save for later. That way I have enough time to think if I need them or not. Most of the time it’s wants not needs and just adding clutter in the house. So now I’m declutterring and donating stuff to Goodwill to have more space in the house. Anyway, can you share your homemade pudding recipe or any recipe’s you can make at home instead of buying store bought box food? That would be interesting. It’s good to learn things from scratch so we don’t have to keep on going to the store. It saves us money for sure. I’m also using cash since December and it helped with impulse buy a lot. I can tell my kids that wants and likes are not part of the budget unless we saved enough for treats. I’m also doing the Three Rivers challenge of no spend January which I like to do as needed. These challenges will surely help save us more money and less junk. So thank you so much! ❤🙏

Hi I have made a shelf in my freezer for leftovers. Go through that shelf and plan my meals from there. Then the pantry, refrigerator and then what I don't have add to my grocery list. Working well for me and a lot less waste and smaller groceries. I have simplified my meals stuff with expensive or complicated is off the list. One last thing I do is it's a cookbook that is out of print but if you can find it's a game changer. It's called Make a Mix by Karine Eliason, Nevada Harward and Madeline Westover. I use this book all the time making my own spice packets, dry mixes plus there is recipes in there for meat mixes you can mix divide and freeze. Makes my life so much easier.

I do that too.. I have made Chili, Vegetable Soup and today Navy Beans with Ham soup. I bought these cool trays from Sams Club 30 pack I believe and I portion them in to those containers each holds 2 cups label them with freezer tape and put in the deep freezer. I will have about 30 single servings ( I am a widow so this works well for me). All my beans I Canned myself also Canned most of the vegetable from my garden. I cooked a ham I had in the deep freezer last week sliced some for sandwiches, chunked some for soup I figured out it came to 76 cents a tray. Each tray of sliced got me about 3 sandwiches. I find it motivates me if I do the math breakdown of what things cost per serving. I am writing it all down too in a journal book. And using the Cash system absolutely. Anna In Ohio

We have a joint checking and three with one savings account for emergencies. Yearly responsibilities from property taxes, both city and country, on two adjoining lots to gift giving are kept in the bank. I am planning on being less wasteful in the kitchen also this year also. I have used grocery pick up and use it more from my local Kroger store but I do not get a receipt to upload to my apps from any of the stores and I have found that the prices I pay at Walmart for pick up are actually higher than shopping myself for example the price for a 2lb package of ham lunch meat(great value brand) is almost $1.25 more on the pick up than me going inside. So I actually spend more doing that. More bread making is going to happen in my kitchen also.

I've made soup from leftovers lots of times, keep a freezer container any size of any choice leftovers you want to save before they go bad put them in the container each time and store in the freezer, when the container is full, dump all the different frozen leftovers together (still frozen) into a crockpot or large stockpot add in some water or broth cook untill heated you can add in any extra seasonings of choice (to taste) if wanted, all the leftovers will have thier own unique flavors blended together, this is a one of a kind soup you can make and can be very good and filling . My Family called it Surprise Soup, Its also another way to use up leftovers

I don't like any pick up, I want to see the mark down specials, kroger has red bags of veggies and fruits that are about to go bad for 1.00. Sometimes it's the only fruits and veggies fresh that I can afford. We have been eating mainly from our pantry and the only money allowed to be spent is 20.00 per week for groceries. I need to see the product and compare the prices and look for substitutes.

Well, maybe check out a few of the cooking videos in the channel…..I am far from complicated. So, my cooking from scratch is a very simplified version in order to control the ingredients better, and have a cheaper alternative to prepackaged options. And gardening is complicated to me but……that’s just because I don’t know what I’m doing……..hopefully that is a temporary problem 🤪

My only freezer is the little compartment above the refrigerator. Still, it is stuffed full of who knows what. It’s all food, but I can’t see what’s what. So, freezer clean out became my newest mission. I can’t buy anything else that needs to be frozen until I’ve cleaned up what’s already in there. With the possible exception of ice cream, of course. 🫠🍧🍨🍦
