This $4 part failed on my 2019 SXF-350. I had 8 hours on the engine. I lost the crank, crank bearings, piston, rings, cylinder, and head.... i.e. my motor was turned to scap. There's no warning that the fail is coming. You're fine up until the moment your not. Change this part!!!
You can tell Brad knows his stuff, he just takes things off and throws them in a pile because he knows exactly how they go back on. Thumbs up for awesome mechanics!
I got lucky and caught this by finding little black plastic during my oil change on my sxf 250 2018. It wasn’t completely failed but the teeth on the gear were starting to break apart. Wish I had seen this before :) Great video
Mine is the same ordered a metal gear, was there any damage to your cams ? Or did you get away with it ? I’m hoping I did but will check to make sure when I install the new gear
Good vid. My 2017 ktm 350 xcf broke this plastic gear at 30 hours..... had to rebuild the whole motor, all parts except the casings. If you own a bike with this older plastic gear, change it ASAP or expect a $8,000 bill (poss 4k USA) im in NZ. Its a KTM manufacturer fault and there was no recall as far as I know, amfrom what I read, they may have not mentioned it to avoid payouts....... just me speculating tho. :)
Thanks for the vid Jay! I was under the impression it only affected 2016-17. Now I gotta crack mine open. I like your mic holder, with 3 daughters I have several pink ones laying around the house lol
Exactly, that’s what I did. The updated plastic gear must be doing good. Haven’t heard of the failures like I used too. The guy that made mine says, it’s actually the little one that takes out the big one. His kit includes both.
I believe the problem is more to do with oil pressure control and poor design of the relief port. Depending on how the relief valve has been fitted with its spring.... when the ball is pushed off its seat it can partially cover the port back to the suction side of the pump... you then get a pressure build up that causes a strain on the pump drive..... hence the weakest link fails...that’s why we still see failures with the new gear too....on testing pressures it should be 13 psi at 1600 rpm and 36 psi at 6k and I have seen 150-200 psi...get those pressures checked to specifications in the manual and see what KTM have to say about it.....
It's the type of plastic it goes soft warps and drops of the side of the other gear more often than shearing teeth off. However sheared teeth would indicate possible high pressures in the system causing teeth to fail.
Be very interesting to know how many KTM and husqvarnas have seized in total. Must be 100s and 100s mine went at 102 hrs. KTM should have done a recall on the part. They knew it was faulty hence the new part. I know of at least 8 bikes just in South Wales that this gear has killed.
CHANGE IT !!! my oil pump just died 3 days ago and it brome everything (crankshaft, piston cylinder and oil pomp are dead)… so change it every 100hours to prevent anything
If this problem is simmilar to all ktm/husa engines, why were there no recalls from ktm factory? I belive you, but still... That kind of technical flaw should be noticed by them. And i hope KTM wouldnt simply ignore that. Yes?
This one just came out recently. Shows much more in depth. There are two nuts that are left handed threads (Righty loosey, lefty tighty) that is not mentioned here. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-RT2YLcRLCUU.html
Can you do a video on installing 6th gear into ktm\husqy\gasgas. I just came across the new kit from rocky mountain. Yes I know I should have bought an exc. Lol.....I hate having to rev the piss out of my 450 ktm to do 50-60mph down the road. I plated my 450 SXF and put a light kit on it.
I just found out that mine is warped and that is why it is not running. I have 22 hours on the 2018 350CX-F. If there is piston or any other damage will KTM warranty it? It’s a known issue I would think they would.
Jay, can you not replace the idler gear by just removing the clutch cover and removing the clutch basket? Does the entire side case cover have to be removed to perform this procedure?
@@dirtbiketv1 Thanks. I changed it out the other day already. It had the old suspect gear but it still looked to be in great shape. No wear on the teeth or warpage to the gear.
I know we all love a weight saving but I just don't understand why they wouldn't revise a plastic part that's known to fail by replacing it with a metal product, seems strange to me, I'd rather a bike that was a few grams heavier than have grenade anxiety about stuff like this
Peugeot use them plastic cogs in scooter engines, I had a brand new scooter and 2000 miles down the road the oil cog shattered and destroyed the engine within a few seconds, it warped and jammed then shattered, stupid design
So does a 2020 ktm 350 exc-f have this new oil pump gear from the factory? Any reason to swap out the stock one on my 2020 for this new part # gear? Or does it already have it?
I have a 17’ 350 XC-F and I’ve been getting a lot of aluminum in the oil. It sure looks like my balancer shaft has walked out a little bit. Is there any advice on this?
We think you need to get the main larger cover off the ride side-- The primary could be loose -- but either way something on that side and need that off to see it-- then take clutch off and see what else could be--
@@dirtbiketv1 I’ll check the primary gear when I have a chance. The driven balancer gear has moved about 1/8” out. It shows some wear on the face, I’m not sure why yet. Thanks for the reply.
Hello, in the Sparepartsfinder has the Plastic Gear of my Model already the shown Part number. Does my Model now have the new or the old (bad) one? Thanks ;)
Lots of secrets when it comes to euros lol. Shockers, but wait how much does it weigh haha. Ooo i have a bike that weighs less its good good it is plastic..😄 Know The Mechanic again and again lots of secrets///failures many people do know of being informed and have witnessed.
Is cam chain slapping noise a symptom of pending failure ? Its 2021 but I just bought an old stock 2019 350 SXF with zero hours from the local dealer here in British Columbia Canada. I did the proper break in heat cycle for 3+ hours and at 3.5 hrs while on the first 60% ride I heard twice a cam chain slap noise, both times at idol and only for 5-10 seconds. Turned around and got back to the truck. Could the failing gear cause low oil pressure which in turn reduces the cam chain tension ? cam chain tensioner as I understand it runs off of the oil pressure.
I replaced both of my oil pumps gears with Hicks Billet gears. Thanks to this video, the process was much easier. From what I understand, KTM racing uses Billet gears and not the plastic ones. That’s all I needed to know before I pulled the nearly $200 trigger.
