Thank you. The only poisonous snake in Britain is the adder, but a bite can kill an adult man or woman in only 20 minutes so. Even though I have never heard of one near where we live close to the medium size town centre, there was once one in the back garden when we lived about half a mile away next to fields and trees. It wanted to water from the pond. So I know to avoid having a pond. My youngest thought it was one of those rubber toy snakes because we had one somewhere albeit not the colours. He moved it with a stick and it slithered away and my son ran indoors. We also had a lovely dog, so it was a worry. Not long after the pond lining failed and let out the water, and we didn't mention it to the landlord as it was better to not have it repaired or replaced. No fish in there anymore.

One interesting fact (or maybe myth) about Eastern Brown Snakes is that juveniles dry bite way less than adults and that dry biting is a learned/developed 'skill'. Their venom does definitely change/develop with age along with their primary prey for sure, but some very wise bushies around here have insisted that the very young ones are much more likely to 'invenomate' simply because they haven't developed the 'skill' of dry biting. I am still looking into this and going to ask my country vet here.

I wouldn't risk NOT taking your dog to the vet. Any delay can mean disaster.

Do you know if it safe to use an epipen on cats? Or dogs? I have read it can help humans but can't find information online as to whether an epipen would help a pet? Of course an epipen might be as deadly for felines and canines, so I thought you might have more knowledge. I am surprised that it isn't a good idea to try and suck out the venom. Isn't this what we are supposed to do for humans? I know we are a very different type of animal but I am now going to look into whether advice for people has changed. Glad you mentioned this.

Hi @angr3819 there are some circumstances where an epipen potentially would be useful (not a snake bite), however you would need to have a vet advise on specifics for your animal. As for sucking out venom, this isn't even something you do for humans.

you don't mention how deep the breathes need to be. If a person breathes too deep or not deep enough then won't their dog not survive either?

My biggest concern is my Lab and I spend a lot of time in the bush , generally 2 hrs from any vet . How long would my 35-40 kg Labrador have before its to late ? I realise there are variables but just a ball park guess .

Hi Luke, honestly it is impossible to predict. It really does depend on how much venom is injected. The best advice is to get on the road and get to the vet asap. Don't wait. It's far better to get back to town with a dog wagging its tail looking at you like a goober, than thinking they are fine and waiting only to have them deteriorate and pass away. I know this isn't what you want to hear.

@@YourVetOnline Thanks for the reply , his a very obediant boy and he stays close , his also very playful and I don't know how he would react with a snake ? I would always get him in the car and rush him to a vet and do actually check where the nearest vet is before I go . Thanks again for the good advice .

In an emergency, this video is entirely WAY TOO LONG. Will someone please list out the immediate FIRST AID suggestions? Benedryl??? Vetericyn-Plus spray on the actual fang wounds (due to bacteria on snake fangs)??? Garlic capsule or Oregano??? Seriously, we’re in a remote location and are just needing some quick answers on a Sunday morning as we look for a vet clinic that might be open???

I hope your dog is ok. The idea behind videos such as this one is for people to be prepared. The start of the video explains exactly what you need to do. There are no hocus pocus treatments that are relevant. The First Aid is exactly what we share.
