On the other hand, elastic bending stores energy that can be released rapidly after failure, so it's not necessarily a bad thing (or a good thing, depending on how you look at it). Also that's why compressing big springs is terrifying.

@@MVargic For today's bearings, that would probably require over 1000 tones of pressure. Over 3 times the maximum of this press.

Press' force itself doesn't send the shrapnel flying, not directly, so bigger force does not necessarily translate to more mayhem. The press "only" provides energy, relatively slowly, to be accumulated in some other form (like the bearing's case bending slightly before breaking) and eventually violently released. So the most terrifying crushes are not those that have the highest force sensor readings but ones where the piston travels some distance while most of the energy isn't dissipated in the meantime.

@@Kualinar It would be interesting to see the failure of a bearing with a shaft, even if that means using a smaller bearing. I'd like to see the bearing fail as they do it now, with a shaft in the center, properly sized, etc. Even more interesting would be to see the bearing fail while shaft is supported... so force just from the side to the center.

i know we arent supposed to, but i still do it... the thing is, i dont go STUPID... keep a finger on the outer race, keep it relatively slow, dont angle the nozzle in a way that can force a ball out, and in the case of larger bearings... dont wedge them onto fingers... thats the one ive seen... big bearing seizing at speed and twisting someones thumb off... just watching them, shaking your head, nothing you can do to prevent STUPID... "wtf would you know, huh?" on the way to hospital... "thats wtf i know... HA!" the idea is to clean them, not destroy them.

The front element on a camera lens is pretty damn thick glass. You'd be surprised what it can handle. I'd venture to guess you could fire a shotgun at it with birdshot and it would just pit it.

@@LarsLarsen77 I don't know what lens he uses on his camera(s), but I'm willing to bet it's at least $1000 USD, which in my opinion, is more cm enough to merit building an enclosure around it. Let's also not pretend that I mean ONLY the lens... It would be protecting the _entire camera_ as well. There's also the fact that enough pits will eventually start to cause issues. Bigger hits, even not directly to the glass, could also start to knock things out inside which makes is overall function degrade (ie focusing issues). I'd love to test your theory on taking birdshot without breaking... I *_do_* have some old lenses from the 70s that aren't needed 🤔 Just unsure if I want to deal with cleaning up the mess after, since despite your thoughts, I suspect it'll definitely blow it apart 😅

Yea, I'm definitely onboard with this... Scott would be really out of his element in Finland! As such, I think they would need to do 10 videos: 5 in Finland to experience press and explosives shenanigans, then 5 in Kentucky for Lauri and Hanna to experience BIG boom stick related shenanigans. 😁 Kinda like with Slow-Mo Guys, where they knock out a bunch of videos and release them periodically.

Yep it doesn't take long after you pop one of those. Luckily we have big hospital about 5 minutes from the workshop but even that might bee too long.

Friend almost lost his life die to a cutting disc exploding. Cut into his inner elbow and the paramedics said he was close to bleeding out. 😞

With hand held power tools : First : safety googles. Next gloves. Then : face masks and a thick apron.

I had a cutting disk explode and somehow part of the disk looped around in an arc behind the guard (and my glove) and stuck in my arm, right between the vein and the bone. Extremely lucky and unlucky at the same time.

Yep this things go really fast, especially when you are close to the machine. It's impossible to see this piece even on the 100fps slow motion clip. The prober slow motion is 2000 fps and it's pretty fast even there

It's wild how badly we can get hurt sometimes, but have NO idea just how bad! I was helping my neighbor remove the blade from his riding lawnmower deck after he hit a big rock. It caused a fracture in the blade and a sharp, finger sized piece of metal was sticking out at an angle. I was pushing down on the wrench and nut _(or bolt, whichever it had)_ broke free, causing me to fall downwards a little. Take the blade of and start walking into the garage, and my neighbor said _"Hey, you're bleeding!"_ Look down and yup, that protruding piece of metal bit me good on the back of my right hand!! Made about an 1-1/4 inch long cut between my pinky, ring finger, and wrist. It also kind of filleted it inside as well. But just like you, I didn't feel A THING aside from that pressure from "bumping my hand" when I fell downwards. So that was a fun trip to the urgent care... 😅 Thankfully it was just that, no tendon damage, and only very very minimal nerve damage _(which I only realized years later, so it really was minimal)._

When things are very sharp and it happens quickly you barely feel it at first. I have cut myself quite badly multiple times in the past and only felt a dull thud and then looked down to see blood pouring. In particular I remember a couple of times using extremely sharp knives to split thin kindling wood for firelighting and once when I dropped a freshly sharpened axe head against my shin. There have been others when using knives in the kitchen but those are the main stupid ones that were very much avoidable.
