Episode 76
Over the past month, with the help of our subscribers and followers we have rescued 6 Belgian Draft Horse and a pregnant donkey from shipping to slaughter!
Last week we picked up the first 3 of the groups of 5 that we rescued from Bowie Texas Livestock. This video is of us picking up the first 3 from the livestock yard, how they are settling into their new retirement home and a vet check up with Dr. Waggoner of Mobile Veterinary Practice. Along with an update on Arabella who was rescued from Southern Wisconsin Second Chance Lot. Next week, we will be picking up the other 2 gelding and the pregnant donkey.
If you don't know the details of this recent rescue, we saved the first Belgian Draft horse from Southern Wisconsin Second Chance Lot, a 20 year old mare that spent her entire life on one farm as a brood mare and was dumped at a kill pen when she was deemed "too old".
A few weeks later, while scrolling through Bowie Texas Livestock's intakes, I came across a posting of a registered Belgian Draft Horse that was in danger of shipping to slaughter. "Produce Acres Korbin", a registered Belgian Draft Horse registered with the Belgian registry was dumped at the livestock yard and is only 14 years old.
A few days after finding Korbin, another 6 Belgian Draft Horses came in together to Bowie Texas Livestock from an Amish farm in Kentucky. Two of the six were rescued by someone else. We decided to rescue a gelding and a mare that came in with the group of 6. (Lot# 1035 & #1037). As the week went on, the last two gelding in the group were not rescued. I felt horrible for them and did not want to let two of them ship to slaughter when the rest of the group was saved. SO...we rescued the other two geldings as well! (Lot# 1039 & #1040).
Then there was a donkey! As I watched the video of the Belgians at Bowie, I happened to click on a post of a donkey (Lot# 1042). From her video at the livestock yard, she looked like the sweetest donkey and she just wanted to be loved. Something said we needed to rescue the very pregnant momma and her unborn baby from shipping to slaughter. So...we did!

HF&C Amarillo has offered to help us with anyone wanting to send a gift/donation of Alfa-Pro to the horses. When you call, tell them you are sending a gift to Fletcher Farms Amarillo/Big Hoof Foundation and they will add the gifts to our account.
Alfa-Pro is a complete pelleted alfalfa mixed with vitamins and minerals all the horses need on a daily basis. Alfa-Pro is $17.45 per bag. They do offer a discount if you purchase by the pallet (40 - 50 pound bags) $16.95 per bag if purchased by the pallet. WE go through about 5-1/2 bags per day to feed all the horses (270 pounds per day).

If you would like to send the horses a gift of hay you can do that through Mauls Feed and Seed. We use Mauls for hay because it is grown locally here in Amarillo and they are priced the best in town. A square bale of hay is $13 per bale and we go through 5-6 bales per day.
