KEVIN SAVED MY SNAKES LIFE! I’m absolutely amazed at where we are today with this boa in comparison to a few weeks ago. So like Kevin described in the video I feed this boa a defrosted small bunny that she could easily eat without any issue. Somehow the way she grabbed the rabbit caused and injury to the bottom of her mouth and jaw. Something I have never heard of or experienced in my 20 plus years of keeping and breeding snakes. When I first noticed the infection I was cleaning it with iodine and a short time after started her on Fortaz injections with absolutely no luck at all. Fearing for the snakes life I knew their was only one person who had the knowledge, ability and experience to handle something like this. I called Kevin who has been a great friend to me for many years and he didn’t hesitate to help me and the snake. Within days we arranged to meet so he could take to boa back to his facility and care her and hopefully turn this nightmare around. Kevin has way more hands on experience than most reptile trained vets and I put the snakes life in his hands. Words can not describe how grateful I am to Kevin for stepping up and saving this animals life! I’m truly lost for words and extremely impressed with how Kevin handled this situation. Love ya buddy
This is wonderful and I was super excited to see some positive results. I was rather discouraged with how fast this infection took control and then this quick growing growth. I wish I videod the growth at its maximum size … I felt like this is not going to end well so I just had to tie it off and do my best to manage it. I took a video but did not highlight how bad it had become. I was super thrilled when I removed the growth and she started flicking her tongue over and over as if finally relieved of this growth! I appreciate Kevin’s faith in me but as I said this was a 50/50 chance of recovery. Things are looking far better and hope to see further improvements after shed. We shall see!!! K
If it was a salivary gland that became infected they can balloon up almost overnight &tend to look rather horrific they are located under the tongue and for a snake would be on either side of the glotus...removal is frequently the best course.

I have 2 water moccasins behind my house that, after a year, I’ve finally convinced my neighbor not to kill. I had to be on constant “snake watch” for that whole year to make sure he didn’t harm them. They bask in the sun and it’s amazing to watch them. I’m blown away that the growth in that gorgeous snakes mouth left behind such a nice, flat area. You did a really good job tying it off as growths in the mouth like that don’t usually turn out that well. I really wish the Vet I worked for all those years ago, was still here. He had to invent treatments for reptiles and was amazing to watch. Well done Kevin!

That's awesome dude! I don't kill even dangerous mammals, as long as I am not in immediate danger I'll let them be. Actually earlier this year found a bobcat in my yard trying to kill my chickens and I was really close to it, but it was more scared of me and back away from me, but I happened to catch it and release 20 minutes from my house so it wouldn't come back to my yard

Yeah, idk if it was her normal temperament, but a lot of animals if they get really sick/hurt and feeling like they're going to die will, if they don't go into complete defensive panic mode, be more trusting and accepting of being handled. It's not something an amateur should trust their safety to, but it happens. Hell, sometimes if an animal is desperate enough, they'll approach a human looking for help. For as dangerous as we can be, a lot of animals know that we can do things not only beyond their capabilities, but their comprehension too, and since we don't attack every non-human we see, it can be worth the gamble. It's rare and mostly mammals and occasionally birds, but there's plenty of video of it happening online. And frankly, we're no different. Our religions and stories (even explicitly fictional ones) are full of examples of people, faced with a problem beyond their capabilities throwing themselves at the mercy of a seemingly capricious being beyond our comprehension even if out of desperation because we know we're just as doomed if they kill us as if they didn't help us.
@@dynamicworlds1, oh yeah there are tons of videos of all sorts of random animals even some animals that are well...not to be messed with types yet they come to people looking for help. I've watched a Cobra that was extremely dehydrated be completely passive when the people realized it needed water, allowing people to pet it while it drunk then the beauty went on back into the forest without even a bit of aggression towards the people. I've also seen videos of say a Cougar come up to a group of people and be playful, a wild Mountain Lion playing with and allowing people to pet it before after a while going back into the woods...animals are beautiful, strange, entertaining and all of them are different individuals. I would have never thought a wild Mountain Lion would play with a person and be that friendly. But as for the Big 3 (Boas, Anacondas and Pythos) they're generally well tempered, of course a wild or not as socialized/better tempered snake would in my opinion most definitely bit him...though I've seen a bunch of videos of people going and catching wild pythons and the python just keeps trying to go about it's mery way ignoring the people.
I am not hugely into all reptiles, but do like big snakes, monitors, crocs and so on. I love it when Kevin talks about animal husbandry and handles a snake apparently from instinct. His style, is soft spoken…not grating and loudmouth like some others on RU-vid…😉!
The way she just comes right back to your hand with no aggression after she’s let free. She knew you helped, she definitely did. Boas are wonderful animals.

I loved when he comforted the boa by saying he was sure that was all very uncomfortable with her and patting her gently... The empathy he has for these animals is amazing. I love Kevin so much and I'm so happy the darling girl is doing well!
@@bethanydawn87 he gave it anaesthesia to numb the area and antibiotics. Painkillers would be terrible for a reptile as they don't have the ability to process them through their system, antibiotics is risky enough which is why he always injects into the first third of the body, as far away from the kidneys as possible to avoid damaging them. General anaesthetic is terrible for them and they often don't survive the process and that's if you are able to find a vet who knows what they are doing when it comes to exotics *and* will agree to actually perform a surgery on a reptile knowing that the risks to the animal's life is so great when doing so. Please actually educate yourself on the topic before voicing an opinion, this is all common knowledge and reptile keepers/breeders have explained this all a million times. Kevin has been working with and treating these animals for most of his life and has seen 90% of these issues many times before as well as successfully treating them in other reptiles. How is it that you think a vet whose main understanding of animals centres on fluffy household pets and farm animals and who would need to actually research and learn what to do with reptile would be a better choice than that?
Reptiles and shakes is a specialty, and most vet s van t do anything for Them. There are exceptions and so some vet s either nu experience like Kevin had and taught vet s....hé s been educating vet studente nu the wat, and Dome vet s are people who have a seperate training or have reptiles themselves. But anyway, there are also lot of places here there aren t Manu vers, die to that IT s even harder to vind a good reptiles vet at all.

You’ve given that boa a good chance. Frankly, most vets, even exotic specialists, wouldn’t have bothered to even try. Thank you for sharing despite the potential for negative comments, especially if it didn’t go well. From 100% chance of death, to 50/50 with treatment, to what looks pretty promising for recovery. Thank you even more for caring enough to try.
'if you knew the real me you would probably hate me' well, we know one of the parts that matters, you care about animals and do your best to take care of any problems that comes up with them... You know that how someone treats animals says a lot about their true character. And quirkiness just adds more to a person, doesn't mean there is anything bad or wrong with that! I was actually thinking it's one of those genes in snakes that leave it dis(a)bled, because it doesn't really move much and its head was shaking side to side sometimes when it lifted it's head. There is some genes bred into snakes because it gives them cool and nice colors. It shouldn't be bred into snakes but people like the cool colors. I doubt they would tell you because they don't want snake hobby to be demonized

The way the surgery has gone so far on the Boa is almost unbelievable. It's amazing! It was interesting to see the King Cobra and even more interesting to hear the results of the bite on the mic. The Water Moccasin is a real beauty. I think I've only ever seen one in a Zoo years ago. From it's body shape and bulky build it seems pretty obvious that it isn't the type of Snake to chase people. Not that many Snakes do except in extreme case. Awesome job with all of them. And thanks for yet another fantastic opportunity to see what you do and to be able to learn from it.
Hi Kevin It is so fantastic you used your knowledge of snakes, and knew what to do, so this beautiful snake would survive. Animals know when some one is trying to help them. I experienced that myself when a friend's dog was in trouble. He knew I worked for vet. The dog had a stick lodged in his mouth. I said get a pliers,and and I will pull it out. The dog did not know me, but did not struggle. I was able to get the stick out , or it would have chocked to death. The dog knew that I was going to help it. 🐍♥️ Cindy
@@cynthialbell521 and they remember to. I knew someone who had a Border Collie whose life was saved by their vet. Some years later they were on a crowded beach with the Dog. The Dog suddenly ran off and the people went after it. Only to find that the it had found the very vet that had saved its life several years before.

I don't typically get invested in videos because I'm not usually browsing in chronological order, but I was truly hoping for an update on this boa! I commented on the last video with a few ideas, coming from a veterinary perspective, for what this mass could be, and I have to say, this one still has me stumped. Kevin, you've got me digging deeper into snake oral anatomy in my spare time because this is such a strange situation and I would love to see this sweet girl recover. I'd love to get some histology done, but the take-home message here is one that many doctors and veterinarians need to learn - this animal is someone's pet, and practice is different than theory. The treatment isn't for the sake of scientific exploration but rather to find a pragmatic means of saving this animal's life. Since chemotherapy for a snake isn't on the table, removing the mass in the least invasive manner was a logical first choice along with the appropriate antibiotic therapy. While tying off the mass is a bit unconventional in clinical practice, it seems to have worked, and that's what truly counts to the animal and to the owner. I truly do hope this animal continues to improve under your care - she seems like an absolutely lovely, even-tempered snake.

Great job on the leucistic, she looks much better and now has a great chance at a normal life. I know she's not out of the woods yet, but removing that tumor/granuloma was the first step to saving her life. Great job from one animal over to another, keep up the great work Kevin & Crew
It's very frustrating that there are so few hands on certified reptile vets that owners must figure out the medical aspects themselves but it's good to have the fearless handlers willing to dive in and take on the challenges.
@@sdqsdq6274 I agree. Few have enough reptile training to even attempt a treatment and would most likely recommend it be put down. Hopefully in future it will become a specialized field available to the layman pet owner and not just a rare few who work almost exclusively with high paying zoos. Any veterinary University would benefit greatly from listening to Kevin about both behavior and health (mental and physical) of reptiles

Kevin, when I was a kid living in South Carolina I used to play in the swamp just off our back yard. I often played in the water where there were water moccasins nearby (I could see them). Not once was I ever "attacked" by a water moccasin or had one behave aggressively towards me. I have tremendous respect for all snakes. I love how you take time to make various situations a teaching moment that is positive. Thanks.
You are amazing! You can just see how that boa respects you. Thank you for sharing the journey with us. Also decades ago in high school, that was next to a swamp/nature reserve north of Pittsburgh, we were warned before cross country or any type of outside activity on the trails to watch out for timber rattlers and water moccasins. We for certain saw and heard the rattlers, but never the moccasins. But the school janitor, an avid hunter, had permits to hunt them certain times of the year and always said he was successful. Not sure where their territory ends but they are a little farther north of Virginia. Thanks for all you do!
Wow! By the King Cobra biting on to the mike, you could really hear his growl. So many videos, people mention the growl, but it doesn't come through on the video. It was a treat to finally hear it clearly.
Really nice to see progress in that boa. She really has a lot of patience with all the work you have to do on her. It would be nice to see a banded water snake next to the water moccasin. I have never seen either in the wild.
Love watching your animal husbandry. So… straight to the chiggity moc!!! Grew up with these sweeties!!! In the bayous, swamp, and the brackish waters close to Sabine Lake and Sabine River. They are like every other snake we would see. Being keen outdoorsman, my parents and Grandparents first rule of hunting or gathering was don’t take it unless your gonna eat it! So we let them be. Its super easy to tell the chigs from the nastier tempered “water rattlers” ! Either way none of us ever got bit by them or attacked by alligators lol. We learned from an early age to keep your ears and eyes open. Observe their positions.. startled or what ever. Miss being in the field as a Wildlife Guide. Much love of your channel. I thoroughly enjoyed your video and when that snake bit the mic I cracked up !! When I was a child my father would take me fishing at night on a small dock float that was tied to the bank, the water moccasins would swim up to the dock and pop their heads up on the dock- dad always told me not to be afraid and leave them alone that they were just curious. I was never afraid of snakes or lizards so it was fun for me, the only problem was the snakes actually scared the fish away and it would take about 15 minutes for them to start biting again after the snake would leave. Growing up in Tennessee and going fishing on Lake Norris was wonderful.

Water Moccasins - Oklahoma! Grew up around them, rattlers, and copperheads! I got into soo much trouble, for carrying home a baby copperhead, at 13. It slithered into my hand, and I just carried home like that, speaking softly, as it snuggled up, fell asleep. Dad made me let it go, although I got it as a pet for him. We only had issues with a Water moccasin, when we had a leaky faucet on the side of the house, when we lived on the lake, in Mannford. My sister was opening the door, and the snake struck out between us, then back. I realized she was just cooling herself off, I asked my parents to leave it alone, until the next day. Of course, mom and sis couldn't have that. I put my cat into the garage, penned the Shepherd. Never got hurt by one, nor a rattlesnake, or Copperhead. But I did carry a pronged stick, to pin their head down. I also nursed all the injured reptiles in the area, back to health. Lots of King snakes were attacked at construction sites, so if I didn't stop them, we'd begin to have rats. Construction guys killed more harmless snakes - ran from rattlers! Us kids were a tad mean - but these guys killed everything harmless.
That boa, wow! I can't believe how she was in shed, and still so calm with you poking and prodding cleaning up her injuries or whatever! Already she's looking so much better!! Lucifer hates that daggone microphone apparently, geez!!! Watching you with the Water Moccasin(which are those also called Cottonmouth?) , or with any reptile really, is nothing short of magical. Water moccasins are probably the snake with the richest history of "my uncle said" stories of any snake in north America. Their behavior, color change, and reputation for eating other snakes makes them one of my favorites. Compared to their cousin, the copperhead, they are super calm and a much easier snake to hook and move. Thanks for kicking so much ass Kevin!
As a child I remember being on a boat with my family fishing in the bay and a water moccasin just swam by. My family freaked out because I was like 8 and parents first instinct is to protect their children, but I was so fascinated. It was about as big as Tabitha and I remember it so clearly. It just went from brush, swam by, and went wherever it was going. I really do think they get a bad rap but Tabitha has really set a beautiful example of how snakes can be with work and trust. I hope more people can see her docile behavior.
