Saving a Marcher who FAINTED!

During the day time performance of our 2016 marching show, someone went down on the field. It is a little hard at first to see where he is but if you watch it a couple times you can figure it out.
I would like to take a second to point out something. This video isn't for views, attention, or to call myself a hero. It is to make aware how little people are to go out of their way for someone. Granted we were in the middle of the performance, BUT, he was on the ground for a good 10 seconds before I got to him. People were marching all over and around him but no one stopped to help. That doesn't make me special, but I had to do something in order to help him. I couldn't let people just keep marching all over him, that would be awful. Some people after the show were saying things like, "I was going to help him but..." There are no buts here. Someone should have helped him. He was on the ground for a long time, the least you could do was help. Did me helping put me out the rest of the show? Yes, but I would rather not finish a show and help someone than he die and live with the regret.
Also, for the record, I asked the other person in this video to see if it was okay to use this clip, he has agreed it was alright to use.
My message is to pay it forward, you saw a "good deed" here, now go make a difference.

A COUPLE THINGS: 1) This is a college exhibition show, not a high school 2) I know you were probably told just “march over people” that went down 3) If you’re wondering why there are hardly any views on a video with nearly 2 million views, there used to be thousands of comments. I set the video to private by mistake not realizing it would remove all the comments so now the comment section is empty. Enjoy the video. Be a good person.

Don’t put a fellow bandmate’s life in jeopardy just to get a better score, 'cause depending on the judge they might lower your score.”

Yes maybe they shouldn't "stop the show" but someone, like in the video, definitely needs to help the kid because they could easily die if they don't get the help they need. @@ta3kwondo Fainting on a field should be seen exactly as getting a cramp in the leg as a football player. Football players know the risk just like band members. Each should be treated equally with respect. If a football player fainted from exhaustion/ heat, the game would stop, so why not for a band member?
@ta3kwondo
@ta3kwondo 4 года назад
Hannah Walters football games are constantly stopping and starting. To stop for an injured player is no big deal. Competitions, however, are not something you stop and start again. For one, it would throw the the time off for every band after. Each band has a certain amount of time on the field. You can't go over this time. And it's not the performers job to help other members. There should be band boosters or athletic trainers on the sideline ready to help people, just like football. It's not about showing respect. It's just not feasible to stop the show for one member.

jinnie eats When I worked the city day parades with the PD, there were 5ft troughs of water along the route. If any band member was looking like heat exhaustion or sun stroke, they were immediately dunked in the water. Uniform and all to cool the person down immediately. Many schools that marched had only fall/winter wool uniforms to wear for football season. Didn’t go well for the summer day parade. The dunk saved many from further complications.

Yeah it really is dangerous to March in some degrees. They won't stop the show for ANYTHING at all. 4 years ago a girl guard broke her foot in the middle of the show and she had to crawl back off the field to get out of everyone's way. Another light-hearted example, two days ago when we were practicing I had shoes on that were a little too big for me (in our style of March, we March backwards on our toes) so I started back marching and both my shoes fell off and are woodwinds the director had to sprint and take them off the field.

The quotations are meant to emphasize that it was a rescue and not just someone who didnt care dragging someone off the field to get them out of the way. Rescue as in having compassion and making sure the person was ok and getting the necessary help. As for stepping up...its because no one else did and is emphasizing that at least Scott did. I totally get the quotations as there is nothing hard to understand about it and is not sarcasm.

Kronk well, it’s not the band members fault all the time. Like echo said, you only need 1 person to help, 2 max. And a lot of directors drill into your head, “don’t stop for anything, the show must go on” while a lot of directors wouldn’t mean, don’t stop and help someone if they’ve passed out, but rather the band members thinking that way. I know I personally would stop no matter what, even if my director told me not to, luckily she doesn’t, but still. Unless I really couldn’t, I would definitely stop. And I know a lot of people would too.

There’s a toxic mindset that a lot of marching band directors (especially old ones) try to drill that’s “no matter what happens, keep marching”. Not only does that mean you keep marching if you drop your music or your pants fall off, it includes leaving a comrade behind or running into a bystander during a parade for fear of breaking line. It’s really stupid, because some directors flip a shit whenever someone holds up the line during practice, even if it’s for a good reason, so there’s that “I can’t help anyone” mindset that the marchers develop. I’m proud of you for helping. I don’t know your director, and I don’t know if they had that WHATEVER YOU DO JUST MOVE ALONG attitude, but unfortunately so many do. So glad you sacrificed your spot in line!

I know this video is over two years old now, but it just popped up in my recommended. I would just like to say how amazing this is. As marchers, most of our directors have passed on such toxic attitudes to us about “if someone falls, leave them, they’re down,” but marching band is a team sport. I think you forget the state of mind in marching band. Just b/c some one messes up and falls you don't. If something goes wrong you act like everything is fine. Now that being said, I would and also encourage some others to help some one if they faint in a show as that is very serious and they're not on the ground b/c they messed up. However under normal circumstances the show must go on and normally if other people fall even in your way you keep going. I've even been ran over and have ran over others it happens. And I've also seen this but I didn't have to stop and help myself as others were quick to. So just keep this in mind when you attempt to pass judgment on others. Esp. When you work months for scores of this one performance. And walking off the field most definitely DQ this band

I was in a similar situation in high school, we were inside working on music when one of our members passed out. I like most people assumed they had kicked they're knees, they hadn't. They had gone into cardiac arrest. Thankfully they survived but in not sure they would have had everyone around them just decided to let it go until we finished the set or they got up.

Good job on saving that person, you are a selfless person. Im sure they are gratefull for you. Kind of the opposite but Jack State University 2016 was the coldest I have ever been. My friend (Baritone) and I (flute) were both in our member jackets, had blankets and had hot hands and we were still freezing. But the person that had it worse was the little girl sitting behind us. She was a thin little girl wearing a light jacket and that was it. She kept telling her mom she was cold and her mom couldn't do anything so she kept telling her that it would be over soon but in reality there was still two more performances and then awards. The only thing that we could do to help was to give her some of our unopened hot hands. When we asked her mom if she wanted them and explained how they worked, the look in the moms face was something I don't think either of us will ever forget. The little girl of course didn't really understand what we were talking about but the mom did and I am glad that we could help that little girl and her mom out. I don't think anyone knew that it would be that cold. We swear it got below freezing if not in the single digits. I can appreciate what you did and I hope someone would do the same for me if that ever happened. I'm from George Walton Achademy by the way.

at football games near the end of the season, I make sure to bring at least 3 sweatshirts so I can share if I need to. I also bring a 10 foot long blanket and share it with 2 other people. I’ve seen this happen too many times in my band while marching. Thankfully a director, a judge, or someone who wasn’t marching saw and got them off the field immediately. It’s scary to experience and just as scary to watch. You just see the person go down and have no idea what is happening. What makes it even scarier is that sometimes you don’t even know they go down until after the performance is over. I’m sure that everyone has been told at one point or another to “not stop for anything”, but if something like this happens, you should stop and help. Whether it be in practice or a competition, something like this should be taken care of as soon as possible. You shouldn’t march past the person and leave them there. That decision reflects badly on you. And while I’m sure people have their own reasons for marching past the person this has happened to, I don’t believe it to be right. The whole band is in this together and every decision you make reflects positively or negatively on the entire band. I believe that your decision to help this person instead of leaving him there reflects positively on your band and what kind of person you are. I know many people would not have the courage to step out of the drill and do what you did. It was a very courageous thing to do. Thank you for everything you did to help this person.

I get the whole “bank kids should be tough” thing because, let’s face it, bank kids like us aren’t really look at by society (especially in high school) as popular or tough, but that day you helped a fellow human in need. That to me is pure coolness. Imagine your body going through something so hard that it can’t even hold itself up anymore! The guy needed medical supervision. Also, people could have stepped (marched) all over him, or tripped on him and dropped their instrument on his head. Baritones are heavy! Good for you Scott. Good good good!
