As a Canadian, ANY rust free car for a $1000 would be a unicorn much less a Porsche. Really looking forward to you fixing it up, and undoubtedly along the way you'll be unable to resisit the mod-urge 😂

You might get that money for a 944 turbo in the US but the only thing that keeps the N/A 944s from being given away for free is the Porsche badge

At the very least this is a more or less complete and fairly ok-condition car despite it's lack of some tender love for a few years - so it's got value even if not a mint example.

Planning on taking this car to the track once up and running? I love the 944...

Still regret selling this thing! Probably going to end up impulse buying a 924 or 944 now lol. Offer still stands if you need some help!

The original 924 came with an Audi engine that indeed also was used in a VW LT van. And even the fwd Audi gearbox, which was now, clutch and all, fitted in the rear. It was a parts bin car, since it was developed as a stillborn Audi Coupe. VW pulled the funding (dead CEO), so Porsche sold it as the 924 to cover the costs. Nevertheless... The 4-cylinder M44 used in the 944 was developed by Porsche, since VW/Audi stopped the production of their EA831, and even the later 924 got the M44. Funny fact; the initial 924 Turbo engine only used the VW casting, but it thus still fits in the LT. I'm sure this makes that combo hilarious. 170hp in a 70s van.

The previous version of the 924 engine was actually a Mercedes design, its a long story. In general a very sturdy design, especially in the Porsche version with forged crank etc. The std M44 has a more smooth modern feel, and more power of course than the na, though the oiling system is worse for track use, kinda heavy and its weak for boost. But it shouldnt be to hard to work on, and still reasonable costs to sort out( in Australia i dont know though, everything seems expensive there)

@@garagecedric I agree with all, but one. The high compression industrial Mercedes engine was only used in the C1 Audi 100, between 1968 and 1975. This was inherited, because, before VW bought DKW, the latter was owned by Mercedes. After the acquisition DKW became Audi, but the engine stayed. The engine used in the 924, the Audi 100 C2 and the VW LT was a new WA-code lump. That 2.0 4-cylinder was the engine that was the basis for the famous Audi 5-pot and the obscure 6-cylinder, which both came as both petrol en (turbo)diesel. The 5-cylinder version was only used in the VAG-group passenger cars, and the 6-cylinder versions were only used in the rwd LT and the Volvo 240 D6, due to their length. The new 4-cylinder was used as the basis for the 924 engine, while Audi dropped it as their budget 4-potter in favor for the EA827 in 1978. The 944 never had that "van engine", since the production of the now VW-only EA831 named big 4-cylinder engines stopped in 1982, forcing Porsche to engineer a new engine for its upcoming 944. Enter the M44 , the engine used in the later 924 and the only engine ever used in the 944.

Thank you for sharing this detail Paul - I wasn't privvy to the full story but knew there was some history there and the joke around a "van engine".

These run or they don’t. They’re everywhere in the states for cheap. Running and non. The turbo car is the one everyone wants but they’re rare. They’re always red.. I’ve heard a lot of horror stories but have a friend who built one as a track car similar to your Miata and it’s pretty sweet.. full cage and turbo but has spent about 30k on it. And it’s still not that fast. But I always loved the looks of these.. Porsh-uh could have done a lot with this car but reliability killed it.

At the very least there seems to be a reasonable following/community and plenty of resources/info online so fixing issues isn't completely blind.

Good luck, maybe put some other simple after market ECU on it if you cant get any parts locally. It shouldnt be to hard to sort out the car, hopefully, they are reasonably simple cars. Looking forward to more videos!
