The build has finally started and I am super excited! So far I had months of paperwork and waiting for the building permit. Now I am finally starting the build and it feels great to have made some progress. The groundwork was very enjoyable and I can reccomend anyone to try and do this themselves. It is a considerable saving and not as hard as it seems. The sand and the open space certainly made it easier.

Haha. Its a industrial estate. So in practice you can make noise 24/7. There are some limits but they are worded in such a technical way that even I cannot tell how loud is too loud. The sound engineer calculated my expected noise emissions and determined I would be far below any thresholds.

Fair play doing the ground work yourselves! Really enjoying this series :) One thing I am curious about is the "cleanliness" layer going straight onto the sand, ive never seen that done before! I was expecting some sort of rough gravel (here in Ireland: hard-core, in the uk MOT roadbase) to be put onto the sand and compacted before the concrete is poured. Is there similar stuff in Germany or is pouring the "cleanliness layer" the new way to go? 🤔
@MaxMakerChannel
@MaxMakerChannel 6 месяцев назад
Ah yeah, I was expecting the same! We call that a load bearing layer out of crushed and compacted rock. We did that in the driveway video last year. That is done to replace the top soil with something that doesn’t get muddy. A engineer told me that the sand acts a bit like a fluid and is incompressible. So It won’t change shape if it gets wet or dries up. Thats why we could just use the sand as a load bearing layer.

good for taking it on yourself but a word of advice for the loader operaptor, the buton with the wave on it is active bucket suspension, its meant to be used when you have a heavy load on the forks or in the bucket and you have to drive over rough or uneven ground, it is not for levelling ground in any capacity. secondly the bucket being used on the mini digger is a grading bucket meant for rough touch up not digging but seeing as its only sand i dont think it matters all too much, but if you encounter anything heavier than sand ie: clay, gravel, rocks, compacted soil or concrete you should use the buckets provided that are smaller and have teeth on them. with all that said i cant wait to see how this turns out, keep up the good work guys.

If you ever do something like this again, get the biggest machines that will still fit on site and not kill you with shipping charges. The loader and the excavator are way to small for what you are doing, especially with this easy to access open site.
@MaxMakerChannel
@MaxMakerChannel 6 месяцев назад
I agree. I told the rental company what I wanted to do and they recommended this size saying its two numbers up from a mini excavator. However it felt exactly like a mini excavator. The shipping cost for the excavator alone was 500€! I could drive the loader on site myself. The second excavator was even smaller but below 2tons. That way you can tow it yourself and save those 500€. Anyway the smaller tools were better for learning I guess.

What is your plan for the solar system set up? I have 10 years experience in commercial and residential Solar and battery systems if you are still looking for input :)
@MaxMakerChannel
@MaxMakerChannel 6 месяцев назад
I looked at the economics. If I make the roof 100% solar it would only be worth it if I can sell the electricity directly through public EV chargers. Because selling the power to the government only pays peanuts. It would be wiser to invest that money in stocks. But 100% solar would probably be enough to supply the heat pump in the winter. In summer we would only use 5% of the yield ourselves. I am still waiting for the prices to come down a bit. I don´t have a supplier yet.
@ThyerHazard
@ThyerHazard 6 месяцев назад
@@MaxMakerChannel I would heavily recommend you spend your money on the inverter, I recommend Fronius and since you are in Germany I assume you will want that to haha. As for panels I wouldn't worry as much as they are all pretty similar and even the cheaper ones have good warranty and for the extra money for a high end panel like a Qcell or Sunpower is not worth it you would be better off in my opinion spending the money and getting more panels I recommend Jinko they are chinese and cheap but I have 15Kw of them on my house and have installed megawatts of them in my career. Also I would favour a sting inverter "The fronius Symo" Over Micro inverters people sing their praises, they are very cool tech but I spent countless days replacing dead micro inverters and the customer support for both Solar Edge and Enphase is abysmal. Micro inverter death MAY be due to the heat in my area as I install in Australia but still, just had to many issues. Plus if you dont have trees or shading issues its not worth it. If you have a few small shading issues like HVAC on the roof for example you are better off getting some Panel optimisers for just those panels. Also I don't recommend solar storage at this stage unless your local government is giving rebates as they are so expensive and they chemical life of the battery is normally shorter than the time required for the investment to pay itself off.

For cabling prep - rather prep some 50mm or 110mm conduit sections. They can be sealed later thus airtight - but allows you to bury/hide cabling which is nicer. Have a look at some of the other YT'ers that do construction to see how they do it. But just gives a bunch of space at a low level for cable and piping so you exit below grade.
@MaxMakerChannel
@MaxMakerChannel 6 месяцев назад
I did that! We have 4 110mm sewage pipes that go through the foundation and exit 80cm below the ground. We can use them for outdoor lights and sockets or water pipes.

The floating function on the loader basically rests the bucket on the ground without the loader applying any extra downward force. This allows the bucket to “float” over undulations in the land as you move along.

Awesome video! Could you give some context around what you choose to blur out? I see you blur out your teams faces, which is fine if they don't want to be on video, but why did you blur the name on the side of the excavator that was working near your house? Surely they don't have an expectation of privacy for something like the company name, even in a very privacy conscious country like yours?
@MaxMakerChannel
@MaxMakerChannel 6 месяцев назад
To understand that you have to know that the Germans are very big on data protection. So if I asked my crew they probably wouldn’t mind, but I bet they wouldn’t be keen. The excavator had a giant advertisement on it and that was a bit distracting. Anyway unlike in the US because stuff is public doesn’t mean you can film it here. Everyone here is a bit sensitive. So I try my best not to step on any toes.
