Question: when people say to "isolate" a sick or infested plant, nobody ever explains any further! Does "isolate" mean put it in another room with zero other plants? Put a bag over so it's completely sealed? Move it to the other side of the same room? Just make sure it's not touching anything else? How isolated is isolated? Could you explain, please? How do you quarantine a plant in a flat like yours where there seem to be plants everywhere, for example? Congratulations on 100k 🥳
@GreenWitch1
@GreenWitch1 2 месяца назад
Just move it a few feet away from your other plants. Try to keep them in the same environment they’ll ultimately be growing in. Not a dark room upstairs. Pests can’t jump or fly. If you need a deterrent, there are nematodes, beneficial mites, etc. Do Not cover the plant! That will encourage more pests, fungus, etc. Just let them breathe naturally. No need to overreact.
@margaretcalifano1617
@margaretcalifano1617 2 месяца назад
New plants should be as physically far away from your other plants as possible, for at least a few weeks. If you can’t put them in a room by themselves, then I would either dome or bag it to prevent pests spreading. The tricky part is that the plant needs to get decent conditions to acclimate to your house which means supplying good temperatures and good light. Artificial lights are fairly inexpensive now and work well if you don’t have windows available. The bags of course should be clear ones. If none of that is feasible, at the very least wash the plant off with soapy water and rinse. It’s really awful to have to treat your whole collection rather than to nip it in the bud
@GreenWitch1
@GreenWitch1 2 месяца назад
Don’t overreact! Don’t cover them. Don’t put them in a different environment than they will be living in. Let them breathe naturally. Plant pests can’t jump 5 or 6 feet, so just put some distance between it & your plant collection.

@@melanieg.9092 Wouldn’t know. I had spider mites once & they didn’t spread. My experience with pests is limited to that experience. Maybe my thoughts on the subject should remain in my head.

My tip for getting dust or fine particles out of pumice, crushed rock, semi-hydro, etc is make loads of tiny holes in the bottom of the bag and then flush through with water several times. The dust and tiny particles will be either chased out or settle at the bottom of the bag. You can then use the top half or 2/3 without worry. Once you get lower than 2/3, you can flush again in the bag or tip the whole thing in a sieve and flush it that way.

I have 16 Alocasias all in dirt. I feel the same way about my Sinuata as well. ❤Mine has 8 leaves atm with 2 more growing. I've been very lucky with Alocasias. All of mine have multiple leaves some of them with up to 16 leaves. The only one that has one leaf is my Jacklyn. Hopefully they will all keep growing throughout winter here. My air con is set permanently at 20 degrees and at the moment my humidity is naturally at 75% with all my plants. I really want to keep them away from going dormancy.

Hi Claire..another way to rinse your substrate or perlite out..is by stabbing holes in the bottom of the bag & running a hose or watering can thru it to remove dust. Then u can just let it drain outside & u don't have to take the substrate out of the bag 😊
@TheJungleHaven

Ooooh great idea! I'd be scared the bag would split and I'd lose all the semi-hydro on the balcony haha

Congrats on 100k! I’ve got it in my head buying rescues from a store that doesn’t take care of their plants is like buying a pet from a big pet chain instead of a breeder, you’re enabling that bad behaviour of not taking care of their stock/investment so they can carry on having those bad habits. So i buy my reptiles from legit breeders, and plants mostly from nurseries, plus they both have a “warranty” of sorts I don’t find semihydro particularly low maintenance, I have to flush my collection every week or so, wash the cashe pots and inner sleeve from the nutrient buildup, it equates to having plants in a substrate for me

Definetly 👍🏻 it’s really so sad to see plants chucked into a bin. I got an alocasia zebrina out of a bin last Sunday in London. Poor thing wasn’t even left on the side but in the bin, lid shut on it and snapped its only living leaf. Fortunately that single leaf was hanging out by the side of the bin and I noticed it by chance while passing by. Now cleaned and rehydrated, on the way of recovery. I’ll end up three more zebrina at the end 😂 more plants to gift others ❤

Like you said, it's just a number, but I hope you celebrate that milestone nonetheless : ) Thank you for this video, the chatty repotting videos are my favourite ones : ) I've also struggled with some of my Alocasias which I've potted in Lechuza Pon. I also had the impression of the dust build up and that it's too fine. I had root rot on my A. sinuata, Melo and Dragon Scale. I ordered some of the bigger Pon from Soil Ninja and hope that my Monstera variegata will love it : )

Hello I really enjoy watching your channel, a few months ago I went in my local B&M and sore a Maranta leuconeura, and it was pretty much gone, there was two new leaves, the rest where drooping. So I said can I have cheaper, as it is nearly dead. And I got it for £1.50. And last year I went to my local lidl, and they had Monstera, and there were nice big ones with beautiful leafs, but I was drawn to one on the bottom shelf. Which only had biggish leaf and one small one. And I ask if I could get it for a cheap price and the manager who was putting out stock, took me over to the counter and said to the lady, the this plant will be £4. Instead of £12. And she is growing beautifully. I even have Monstera plants growing out of my aquarium.

A question for future videos: What do I do with runners? My Monstera Peru has a 75cm long runner with a single yellow leaf. Should I cut it and make wet sticks? Or should it get a pot of Keiki / growing paste and try that on the nodes? I prefer to not grow it on a moss pole, I don't need the hight in my flat, but that seeems to be what one does with runners?

This type of Alocasia like Sinuata, Dragon Scale, Silver Dragon, Melo.. I always, ALWAYS have the same troubles with. First they look like they need more water, then they turn yellow because I gave them water. If they are in a too bright spot, its already over. If its not one thing, its the other... And then they die. Mine are in Semi-Hydro, I even got so paranoid that I started using Hydroproxide while watering too, which made it better. I assume that the fineness of the Lachuza Pon pebbles is too fine? Or I am just not talented enough to keep those alive. My Alocasia Scalprum on the other hand is thriving. So there is that.

Hi! I am a newish plant-parent and I'm still learning alot from creators like yourself. I have two trailing jades who for two years have been very happy and lush, but suddenly one of them started dropping leaves, turning pale, and looking all around quite sad. I took it out of the soil and saw (quite surprisingly) that it had little to no roots. I was shocked how it could grow for so long with so terrible roots. I repotted it with new soil and cut it down a little, but so far it has not bounced back. I live in sweden, so the light, warmth, and humidity is very unreliable. I guess I'm just looking for the final verdict? Do I throw it out and try again? Should I wait for summer and see if it gets better? Is there something I can do to promote root growth? Any help is very much appreciated😊Peperomia Rotundifolia(to be specific)
