In this video I discuss my experience with saving some shriveled dahlias. I tried to revive some shriveling dahlias and was successful with a few of them. If you have some tubers beginning to shrivel, try this method to try to salvage your dahlia tubers. I go over the different storage methods I've used. The mediums the dahlias have been stored in such as damp newspaper, pine shavings (animal bedding), and vermiculite. The locations in which I've stored my Dahlias, the basement, and unheated garage. Storing Dahlias for winter has been series of trial and error. Hope you find this helpful. What have your experiences been with storing dahlias? what's worked for your, or not? Comment below. Thanks for watching! -Steph #zone6gardener #zone6gardening #dahliastorage

I bought 2 dahlias in spring 2021 and loved them. Dark foliage with red flowers. Forgot to dig them up in fall. Bought 2 more in spring 2022 and dug them up in fall, cleaned off the dirt, and put them in an empty box in my basement which is heated. Opened the box today and they are shriveled. I potted them up this afternoon. Fingers crossed they are alive.

From what I understand shriveled dahlias aren't always "dead", they may surprise you. Good luck! 🤞

ok so I stored mine in straight vermiculite, and they ALL shriveled and dried out completely. I am currently soaking them in a tub of water, and MAYBE they will come back some. But oooops, just learning & Will most likely have to re-up on more tubers. THANK YOU for this informative video!

Hi Jessica, I hope they do ok for you. I've learned that sometimes even once they begin shriveling, they may still be viable. You can always toss a bunch that you think are gonners in some soil, and see if they sprout eyes/green foliage. If they do then they are good! I've tried 4 methods for storing so far. Shredded newspaper, pine bark shavings, vermiculite, and paper grocery bags. So far, the paper grocery bags have done the best for me. I guess it depends on the storage location too. Should be dark and cool (45-55 degrees F). Good luck!!

Do a “dahlia reveal” (like a gender reveal) video when you plant all those so we can see what varieties they are! 🤣😘

Right?! I was in a bit of a frantic panic to lift them that I forgot all about labels! I'll have to make that a priority this season.

They look good! I'm afraid to look at mine. I know they are goners haha

I haven’t bought any of those expensive variety myself until I can learn to store them properly. I have wondered if those more expensive ones were better quality and easier to store. I was also going to try vermiculite next year rather than animal bedding and I was considering storing them in the garage but it freezes in there. I’ll have to try soaking the tubers that are shriveled and see if I can salvage at least one of my Penhill watermelon dahlias. Thanks.

Hi Monica! Yes so true. They can certainly be an investment. So best to get a handle on things before we pour too much money into it. I think you can probably salvage that tuber using the method I described here. Give it a go and let me know what happens if you can. Take care!

Hi, do you spray every layer or just the top? I’m storing some for the first time in pine shavings too. I have mine in a tote in an low temp basement . 😊

Hi there!! I just misted on the top and then closed up the box. I was just adding moisture to the box. It worked well and I only lost a couple which wasn't too bad. Each year is an experiment. I just dug mine up yesterday so tommorow I'll be packing them all up. Hope this helps. Take care!

All of my tubers are very shriveled being stored in vermiculite. Can I soak them overnight and then try to store them again? I have to store them until Mother’s Day!

Yes, you can try to rehydrate them. I've done this in the past. You can pot them up if you would like to get them started in some soil, but it might be a little too early yet depending on what zone your in. Once all chance of frost has past in your zone, then you can plant them out. That just happens to be around mothers day where I am.

@@HookedandRootedI’m 6a, so too early for me! I’ll try to rehydrate and adjust my storage! Thank you!

You’d be surprised that even severely shriveled tubers can grow!

This is true!! I experimented with that this year and one I thought was a dud, sprouted!

So pleased to hear you say that, I am trying to store dahlias for the first time and don’t know what I’m doing. The best one I only had three tubers and they all look shrunk. I’m going to soak them and restore them and see if I can get them through the winter.

Susan Sinclair…I would be hesitant to soak the tuber for fear of rotting. I’ve just planted the shriveled ones and they have, for the most part, sprouted. Good luck.
