Reptile exports are a controversial subject, and in this video from Suriname, we visit some middle men who collect snakes and other reptiles and hold them until the exporters buy them, and I take a look into how the reptile export business works, and you may be surprised what we wind up doing with the snakes they have.

Exportation is a good thing as long as it is done responsibly with conservation in mind
@Cottontopexotics

unfortunatly 90% are not. i just got done with day one of a expo where over half to venders are selling wild caught animals to normal people to be pets. I think going forward expos and website need to make it mandatory for vendors selling wild caught animals to post sign saying what all is wild caught and that it should only be bought for breeding projects. Thats conservation through commercialization.

Well "exportation" to what end too? How do we even know that these Surinam "victims" are being exported "only" for the pet trade?

Can't help but think of the Ball Pythons in the wild video where I think you mentioned that the export of those snakes helps keep them alive in the wild because there is value for the local people in doing so. Interesting to see how local situations differ based on the species of snake and where they are located. Great to see you and Bob's videos on educating the locals about the snakes in Suriname!

Anyone who legally keeps exotic snakes in the USA should never be against the export of them because if it wasn’t for exporting we wouldn’t have access to them to even be able to breed captive. Much respect to what these people do so that we may enjoy these animals in our homes. Buying them and releasing them back into the wild is no more of a guarantee of their survival than if they were exported and ended up in a pet-store or breeding facility. Much respect for you helping put money in their pockets 👌🏽

yeah but now that we have captive bred populations we dont need to be taking them out of the wild anymore.
@MrChemicals
@MrChemicals 3 месяца назад
For this specific species there is no need to import these animals in the quantities we used to when we have thousands of established healthy breeding populations in the USA. Pay a little bit more money for a captive bred animal instead of saving a little bit of money and getting an import. That alone will keep money out of that pipeline and most importantly lower the demand so these hunter/trappers don’t look at these snakes as $ hanging from a tree . The only good reason in 2024 to import is to introduce new bloodlines into the ones already here. So only breeders of these animals should be buying imports. No need for a local pet shop or the guy at the expo to be selling imports. Some animals we don’t have many here in the US so that’s a different story but for these specific snakes we have no shortage

Taking animals from the wild for export isn't always a bad thing. It can help to diversify the gene pool for breeders as well as bring in new species for for the reptile hobby. It's also beneficial for the people that are capturing the reptiles and brokering them for the exporters. If really like to have the Suriname boa Bob was holding towards the end of the video

Animal exportation is a good thing as long as those doing it are ecologically conscious and are doing so with conservation in mind. As someone who lives in the US, many reptiles would be unavailable to me (and other keepers) without exportation. Same with the UK, Canada, etc. There will always be the question of the ethics of taking animals from the wild and the conditions they’re kept in on their journey, but as we saw in the ball python movie, people will always find another way to survive. If it’s not exportation, it’s “murder markets”.

I guess this should make me feel better every time I catch an animal and let it go. I feel a little bit bad for it going back in the wild. I know that's the opposite of how I should feel but the wild is a dangerous place. I worry because I caught it so easily. Is a predator going to too 😭

Hi Dāv! On one hand, exporting can be good if done correctly, humanely, and LEGALLY. It also helps to potentially make lesser known species more popular until a captive breeding population can be established. It can also stall deforestation if they're making more money on the animals than lumber. On the other hand, over-collecting, animal cruelty, and threatening a species are all definite downsides, as well as ecosystem disruption.

Wow..... 2$ American for an amazon tree boa is craaaaazy. All the prices for the snakes is crazy . How can they charge so little for them? Then whoever buys these wild caught snakes are selling them for 100x profit. The difference in life people in Surinam experience is something I'm having trouble comprehending. Kudos to you guys for being able to travel the world and witness the lives of local people and the environment of native species we keepers admire so dearly.

Good deeds make you feel warm and fuzzy inside. I think the answer is in the video. As much as I feel for the locals that need money to feed their family, the only way to stop this is the lack of demand (ie. when you mentioned red foot tortoises). I think would be better to teach the locals to keep/breed these animals for export instead of collecting wild animals.

Swipi was hilarious. 😂 I live in Suriname and swipi is what they call vine snakes usually. Bruine swipi (Brown swipi) is the thamnodynastes pallidus. And the witchcraft thing is true, some of my family members like the older more traditional ones were not fond of the idea of me keeping snakes but they got used to it. I also do workshops as a member of snake patrol Suriname to educate the people about snakes. Something funny, whenever ppl from this country see a snake like 80% of the time they think its a labaria (fer de Lance).

It just sucks they have to pull the reptiles out of the wild to do so but it is better then the time u saw that murder market during your ball python documentary. Every month I sponsor a family in Ecuador to help with food, , clean water,, cloths , medicine and to help get their 2 daughters school supplies they should do that for Surinam too to help people over there .

What amazing people Dave, Bob and all those involved in this project, it’s unfortunate that we can’t all enjoy these wonderful creatures in their natural habitats but we need to realise how the world is changing and adapt with it not work against it, you are doing something special educating people about all wildlife but especially snakes as they have so much stigma attached to them and people are frightened and freaked out by them without knowing anything about them or sometimes even seeing them. Watching you all treat these animals with such care and love is very special and inspiring, I follow both Dave And Bobs channels and enjoy everything they put out there, such amazing quality educational and entertaining content 👍👍👍👍

Exportation being done by the locals is probably the best way to get the locals to care about the snakes. I wouldn't want to see a large commercial operation go in and mass collect them, but the way these people do it is likely to keep them sustainable.

As long as it is regulated, i don't see any problem with importation/exportation. As you said, it helps their local economy by giving hunters, middle-men, and exporters jobs to put food on the table and keep a roof over their head, and it helps keep a healthy gene pool with breeding in captivity. And it's so cool that you guys took the time to try and educate the locals who had no idea about their own native snakes, except for superstition.

Thank you for your balanced and nuanced approach. The biggest problem I have is the number of reptiles that die during transportation. I hope that the local governments are keeping count of reptiles in the wild, to ensure that the numbers don't get too depleted. I am happy that redfoot tortoises are not in demand. They reproduce so easily in captivity, there really isn't any reason to take them from the wild.

Dav this is beautiful - I hope you'll continue doing this sort of thing in other places you travel (of course assuming the local community is open to it). Obviously there shouldn't need to be some white dude from the US showing these people their local reptiles, but if it's you or no one, you're great at it! As for the good vs bad question of exporting - it's neither and it's both. It's such a grey area because it depends so much on the specific situation, which animals, if it's being done responsibly/legally/sustainably, etcetc.... There's no single answer.

GREAT VIDEO! Beautiful snake interaction . I have only dealt with Green Tree Pythons in a pet store environment and they were really defensive. They were not in a comfortable environment and stay stressed. That's what I felt was causing them to seem aggressive. Plus those teefs are sharp👀! Re- releasing is amazing! I think we need to stop/slow down the importing for a while. We have MANY of all imported species in America...LOTSA wild caught, but producing captive born is happening and I believe that's the goal.✌I understand some people need money so they import. I feel it needs to at least be made to slow down on the quantities. Iv'e interacted with many w/c GTPs that were so stressed in their captive plastic box home. Same as ATBs...they were stressed and extremely BITEY.

Is it putting them in a bad light saying they'll be put in a box and shipped around the world - in a video advertised by a company that puts them in a box and ships them across the country, to people who'll keep them in a box the rest of their lives? It becomes the whole "pet" debate, really. In the end, a good caregiver gives these or any pet a better life than they'd have had in their natural environment.

I agree with expiration for sure. I wouldnt have some of my animals if at sometime an ancestor was exported. Conservation must be in the equation. On the flip side it really hurts my heart when i see things like sunbeams in terrible condition at my local reptile shop

There are always going to be those collectors who have money and don’t give a rat fart about where the snake came from, so the more you can educate and the more you can send back into the wild, the BETTER, AFAIC. A big thank you to captive breeders for protecting the snakes in the wild to some degree, as well.

It's a tricky questiong because it isn't just about the imprt and the exporting... it's about everything that happens betewwen when the animals are captured and when they arrive- if there was a real way to guarantee that they would be properly handled every step of the way AND their habitat was not being altered it any sort of way(thinking of what's happening to the pankack tortoises right now) then I don't think it would be suck an isssue...but when they are manhandled, abused, maimed, left without food or water for weeks before shipping while they are tossed around in bags or boxes...I as a veterinary medicaal professional have to cringe at the idea of it. I do applaud your buying and release of all those snakes and releaseing them after education the village to the faxct that may be these are not witches pets...lol, but simply animals trying to eek out a life in the same jungle as they are....and they just was to be left alone...sigh. but seeing them FREE AGAIN was rreally beautifull Dave! great Job guys!!!!

This may be controversial but I dont see exporting reptiles is in itself a bad thing. It gives locals an incentive to look after the environment, and not chop it down, or ruin it in some other way. At the end of the day if it wasn't for wild caught reptiles we wouldn't have a hobby to start with. I do sometimes think if people are so against wild caught, pay these people a proper wage to do something else. That way you can end the trade in wild caught reptiles, and the locals won't need to resort to poaching, illegal logging or anything else thats a bit shady to support their families. I guess its easy for us in the first world to be critical of such practises we don't like, but for most of us we are not living day by day. My big problem with wild caught specimens are people who buy them because they see them as a slightly cheaper "pet". I would prefer for them to end up in the hands of breeders.

It be nice to think it gives them incentive to look after the environment but sadly the reality is that’s most likely the last thing on their mind and they will take and take and take until there’s nothing left and then move on to the next thing that will put money in their pocket.

Yeah i walk the fine line of people who support ethical importation for breeding I think there maybe should be some regulations on females and breeding aged boas similar to how they do lobsters in Maine. We definitely need new blood for breeding.and the invisible ark. But again it needs to be regulated and we have to be very careful

Catching snakes and playing with them a little and turning them loose is one thing, and I've done that because one species wasn't good for beginners, and the other one only has a ten year lifespan. Catching a few of them was necessary because two of them got in the house, and someone called me about another one that was in the front yard. But buying them and turning them loose is a waste of money.

For me, it’s not about the money spent but about the joy of loosing the animals from their otherwise inevitable fate of the long exportation process. I enjoy the interaction with the animals and the locals. And it’s satisfying to know the few animals we encounter have a second chance of remaining wild.
@jasonirelan-ig5fl

@@happybasinsBut the snakes have been too familiar with human contact and have a slimmer chance on making it on their old in the wild. It's okay to catch a snake and play with it for a few minutes and turn it loose; but when they've been in human captivity and protection for several months or a year or longer, they're gonna have a harder time at knowing when predators are out to get them in the wild.

I have to agree with zdog, if they can do it responsibly, ethically, and sustainably, then I have no problem with it. I don't like going to my local pet store and seeing sick animals. Just as a side note, I went into my local Pet Smart last week, and I have to say, all of the reptiles seemed healthy. Young and small yes, but healthy!

If I am honest, I don't have enough of an understanding to have an educated say. If I have a point of view based on theory however, then I would say farming/hunting snakes from the wild for exportation, providing it is in some way monitored to ensure populations are not damaged, is fine, and if anything can bring eco-tourism to the area and improve reserves or their habitat in kind, as well as supporting the local communities. I think if anything, we should be looking at regulating holding and exportation conditions on both ends. I think the recieveing country should be responsible for basic checks and parasite care before they hit any trade. But the whole subject is like you day suuuuper Controversial

Such mixed feelings about the exporting/importing of wc animals. As you said, the new blood is important and people need to make a living. It also makes me sad to think of how poorly so many imports do once they arrive at their destination, and how many regular pet owners get wc animals not knowing how much extra care and vetting they might need to get established. Personally, I wouldn’t buy an import unless I was going to breed it and needed the diversity of genes. But I do think it’s important that they’re available to people who are breeding them. ❤

If you were anyone else i would say releasing them into another established ecosystem even nearby is a generally bad idea. But I'm sure you know the risks to both these ones and the ones already living there. I trust your judgement. I do think for long term survival of the wild ones having the exporters is very beneficial as it gives them a reason to care about the snakes and keeping them around.
