Today’s video is going to be on a new ADS-B and UAT product from Nooelec called, the SAWbird+ ADS-B. This is a dual-channel Ultra Low Noise Amplifier and SAW Filter for both ADS-B and UAT that claims to provide +34dB of gain for each band. Since my setup was recently expanded to monitor both bands, this was perfect for me, so I decided to pick one up to see how well it works.

When you get one that works, it works great. Of the 4 I had in service, 2 of them failed after 45 days of 7x24 use. Nooelec sending a replacement, but since the replacement was shipped the second one failed. I was getting up to 110 aircraft in 137-mile radius with the tiny ~7-inch indoor antenna in attic sitting on 12" square steel plate with 50-foot coax.

The primary difference between the standard models and XTR models is the tuner IC. The standard SMArt and SMArTee models use the popular R820T2 tuner, which is capable of receiving from 25MHz-1750MHz with high performance throughout the frequency range. In contrast, the XTR models use the E4000 tuner, which offers a tuning range of 55MHz - 2300MHz, with excellent performance at 1500MHz. There is also a small frequency gap between 1100 MHz and 1200 MHz. Therefore we do not recommend the XTR models for ADS-B applications. This info is directly from Nooelec.

What gain settings ? I get lot less range with radar box + sawbird then without it

Do you have a video on setting up antennas for adsb?

No video on setting the antenna up, but it's pretty straightforward. What type of location are you looking to install?

@@The_Comms_Channel Would it work in an attic space? If not probably outdoors. Im also curious how well the software works if you are offline? Can you get much plane info or even a basemap, or possibly download a database of planes to do your own information lookup?

It would work in an attic but with reduced range. As long as you don't have a metal roof. Having the antenna outside is best if possible, but an attic can work. It does rely on the internet to get plane info, so that won't work if offline. I would like to eventually work on a database that can be downloaded to the device itself so it will work offline as well.

You did not make it clear when it's not plugged in does that mean no power on the SAWbird ? If so, clearly signals will be limited with no power. Or, did you mean you removed its SAWbird from the circuit?

I just bought this. Hooked it up and the map is blank. Checked all connections, input to adsb to antenna and adsb out to dongle. Using the radarbox so I hooked up a 5v 3A usb source. Lights were white. I unhooked it and plugged dongle back in and the map populated right away. Hooked it back to the amp and nothing. I’m thinking this thing is DOA? It showed up in just a baggy so wondering if it was a return.

Darn 😔 as long as everything is plugged in correctly, it sounds like it's a bad one. Double check the connections just to be sure. If I remember correctly, mine was just in a baggy as well.

@@SPLTDP Sure thing! Hopefully it's something simple that won't require you to return it.
