To many farmers went through this in the 1980s. I was raised on a small active dairy farm in Northern Illinois in the mid 1980s through the mid 1990s. Farmers had it rough. Now, 2018, Southwest Wisconsin has lost 40 local small dairy farms. Here this past February, my boss decided to sell his Holstein Cows because there was no money left in milking cows. Now, I go unemployed with a disabling physical condition, in which I'm on social security for, and a 4th grade education and no knowledge of how to work any where's else but how to work on a small active dairy farm. I miss those cows. Long story short, please thank the SMALL farmer and his hardworking farmhand for what they do now. Because they may not be there tomorrow.

Thank you sir for all you did on the farm. Nothing can take the place of you or any other farmer. No matter how many pennies that can be saved doing it other ways. People like you can't be replaced.

I feel for you man. I'm a 4th generation farmer who has immense respect, gratitude and appreciation for all those who have and will continue working harder then most people could dream of just to keep food on all of our tables with little to no thanks for their blood sweat and tears they have shed. Unfortunately farming has now become big business just like everything else and has pushed every smaller farmer out of business leaving all of us with no where to work or any way to support our families because we don't know any other way of living other then farming. In fact I just applied to work at a gas station of which I never dreamed I would do so this song really hits home. To everyone struggling out there just remember we will survive!!

Growing up in a rural country farming setting I saw first hand of watching farms and farmers lose their places one by one cuz of big government farming.. we damn near lost our place a few times especially after the cattle price drop that started to hit us in late 89 and early 90... we had to switch from cattle to sheep.. it killed my grandpa immensely and you could see the lost look on his face of the uncertain future our livelihoods would almost take.. we managed and still thriving and adapted with the times.. I'm forever for my done home roots and farming way of life. I'm balky I can pass that to my son..

I was singing this at work today. I had an off day as I spent my last month at my summer job at a sportings good store waiting to return to my main job at the college once school starts. Ironically, my job at the college is a cafe and it's where I do fit in, but nonetheless, I had an epiphany at the end. In the live version, it ends with, "At the cafe down on the corner, with a lost look at their face. There ain't no fields to plow, they still remember how... they're just a little out of place." And the realization is that everyone at the cafe was lost, but now they have since become friends and are no longer lost. And it made my day at work, as I realized we have a good community and we are all in this together.

I love Sawyer Brown. I sometimes find myself humming it& sometimes singing it knowing there's a Cafe on the corner outside my door. Back in the 70's & 80's & 90's was mostly the best areas of country music for me. Funny thing is in high school not many liked it or listened to it gives meaning to I was country when country wasn't cool. From a Barbara Mandell point of view so true.🙏🌹❤️

I was raised a farm girl and even though my dad sold our farm in the beginning of the 80's, I wouldn't trade that life for a minute. Farmer's were getting raw deals then and it's even worse now. Our government has no idea or even cares how important our farmers are. Government doesn't give a shit about the hard working little guy. "NO FARMER'S, NO FOOD". GOD BLESS the farmers and the hard working men and women who bust their asses to make this a better world. ❤

Phoenix arizona I'm so sorry. That kind of grief is sometimes too much to endure. I don't have the answer to the last part of your comment, however, I do know if we accept Jesus then all things will be made right in the end. Until then... Life is just plain hard though. For some more than others. I don't understand either why things have to be the way they are but I trust in Him. I do understand it's easier said than done at times to trust but it's worth it. And it may be difficult to see at times(or at least it is for me every once in awhile)but there are people out there who care about you and how you're doing. I hope you're feeling better now and not struggling as much as you seemed to be when you typed up your comment. I'll be saying a prayer for you.

This song reminds me of my family's business when they lost it in the late 90's. No one understands til they live it.

At the cafe down on the corner With a lost look on his face There ain't no fields to plow No reason to know He's just a little out of place Well, they say crime don't pay But neither does farmin' these days And the coffee is cold And he's fifty years old And he's got to learn to live some other way At the cafe down on the corner With a lost look on his face There ain't no fields to plow He's bussin' tables now He's just a little out of place And the meek shall inherit the earth And the bank shall repossess it This job don't pay half what it's worth But it's a thankful man that gets it At the cafe down on the corner With a lost look on his face There ain't no fields to plow He's wishin' for one now He's just a little out of place All these soldiers without wars And hometown boys without a home Farmers without fields Dealers without deals And they sit here drinking coffee all alone At the cafe down on the corner With a lost look on their face There ain't no fields to plow They still remember how They're just a little out of place
