Sawyer Glacier in Tracy Arm, Alaska calving nearly ends up deadly from flying ice and debris striking the boat. A few of the spectators sustained injuries from being hit with the flying ice. The incredible video. August, 2011

CmpMean the reason the lady was screaming is because one of the flying pieces of ice hit her, it completely shattered her right femur, you'd be screaming too big guy
CmpMean Yeah, but have you ever had one of your femurs digging into your femoral artery and saphenous nerve? ...Not to mention the rest of the muscles in your thigh that could potentially be receiving one helluva jab from the many shattered fragments of your hypothetically destroyed femur.. like the vastus lateralis, vastus medialis, sartorius and adductor longus.
I was looking forward to the massive wave. A true videographer would have taken an ice shard to the eye, an arrow to the knee and kept the cam on the action.
Yup,, when I shoot lightening photography,, the storm may be approaching but as long as I get those lightening shots I keep shooting. My famous last words.. I like to shoot the storms but they still scare me... I now have remote control so I can shoot from my car.. but you still have to get out every once in a while to check focus..

All these videos of glaciers calving frustrates me so much. Its always laughter even though its pretty obvious that a huge collapse can create a large wave and debris of ice can come flying.
I was just watching another glacier calving clip and I was imagining how amazing it would be to experience something like that firsthand. The feel of the brisk, cold air. Staring in wonderment at nature's might and majesty. Then I started thinking about how large some of those calvings could be and that the water is basically death if you have to go in it. "Nahhh, I'll just watch youtube videos of other people going there instead." *clicks on this clip* "Good idea."

iSkyShotz True, but unfortunately that's true. So far almost everyone I've seen scream 'gay' when they disagree with someone is from the US. I have no clue why. But you do have a point. I should've said 'people'.
Here's a bunch of people paying for a trip into an environment they only know from Disney Channel or maybe Discovery Channel. When they see the massive ice-chunk fall into the water they still think it's TV, "We're good" :))...until they realize it's no longer TV.
Its an art form to recording nature like this. You HAVE to keep focus on the event in front of you when you're freaking out. Not your feet. Once the ice fell, we saw nothing. It was over at that point.
I wonder if at some point someone doesn't say to themselves, "Maybe all these smaller slides are indicative of a larger event..." Not judging just saying.
@TheLuigifan8881 I don't think that's what they meant. Just simply that we must always be aware of our surroundings while visiting and viewing the more dangerous events she has to offer. That's the beauty of it! Our little blue rock. Our home. It supports us as we hurtle through space at 67,000 mph around our very own star. We get everything we need from it. And in seconds it can turn from routine to life and death to take everything away. Never take nature for granted and never take life for granted. Always be prepared.
I want to make a song about RU-vid comments. It has to capture the essence of the vile cesspool of scum and hatred that is the RU-vid comments. The blatant ignorance, the intentional aggravation, the naive assumptions and blind arrogance. Man would that be a song. I dont want you guys to change, I dont want you to get a life. Or, um, WAS IT ALLREADY DANGEROUS and you entered the danger zone.While we are on this subject, did you hear about the tourist at Yosemite, suggested that the park should train the (wild) bears to 'perform' for the tourists!!!
What I learned from calvin glacier videos on YT. 1. The algorithm wants to tell me something 2. Never approach too close to a glacier 3. If you see disintegrating ice - go the hell outa there!
I would love to have seen that wave! That is so immense that it's hard to put into perspective but it must have been a rush. Just think of the energy involved, a piece/pieces of that glacier hit the boat... and fast.
Calving events can easily get to be ten times that size. Meaning, the skipper of that boat could easily have lost the boat and all souls on board, getting that close. Meaning, there's one born every minute.
What boat was this or what place where you going out of for the tour they where aweful close when I worked up there we never got that close to glaciers just for this reason they can be deadly.
Crude comments are not warranted here. This seems to be a cruise ship excursion, and some of the passenger on the boat are seniors out for a day trip. Why didn't the captain move the boat as the sheets of ice began to get larger and larger?
It’s never ever safe when a boatload of people are around ice shelves are breaking off of glaciers because there’s that one big wave that follows and can capsize boats!
In the mountains, a single gun shot may be enough to start an avalanche. I wonder if the energy wave created by the constant droning noise emanating from this ship was enough of a vibration to cause the collapse of the glacier. It may sound far reaching, but there seems to be a lot of videos like this where these ships just happen to be in the right place at the right time. If so, is it intentional ?
